Popular make up and skincare things that don't work for you

We've all seen products recommended by others that just didn't live up to the hype for you. Here's some of mine:

Trilogy Rosehip Oil - I love other facial oils, but this left my skin feeling tight

MAC lipsticks - the colour range is amazing, but I find them all so drying, even the non-matte formulas. I have about 6 and there's not one I would repurchase

Clarins Hand Cream - less moisturising than the Vaseline Intensive Care I'm currently using

Worst was definitely YSL Touche Eclat. The smell is awful.

I didn't get on with Trilogy Rosehip oil either.

OlennasWimple · 22/10/2016 20:04

Ponds cold cream makes my skin break out

Puppymouse · 22/10/2016 20:05

Touche Eclat here too. Makes me look older, more tired and like I've smeared a soggy garibaldi under each eye. Maybe I wasn't doing it right...

KatharinaRosalie · 22/10/2016 20:05

Bare Minerals. I looked like a corpse. With really big massive craters for pores.

hollyisalovelyname · 22/10/2016 20:22

Clarins Handcream- load of sh1t*
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream- oh the smell!!!
Clarins Eau Dynamisante - aghhhh - smell.
John Frieda Frizz Free stuff- it didn't work
Boots Botanics Fast Absorbing Body Lotion- they're having a laugh with that name. It leaves a heavy white film- I never had a body lotion as bad as it. And I so hoped it would do what it says on the tin bottle.

FuckThatToOneSide · 22/10/2016 20:27

Clarins 8 hour cream - recommended to me specifically for using on rosacea and it really exacerbated it.

Dove gradual tan lotion stuff - awful, streaky crap which brought me out in a terrible rash.

Footner socks - was so disappointed in this, as it came highly recommended, by MNetters no less! My feet peeled like anything for a few days, but ended up looking and feeling much as they did before, as soon as the peeling stopped.

ClinkyMonkey · 22/10/2016 21:43

I too had a reaction to Touche Eclat. It made my skin red and itchy. When I mentioned it to the sales person, she looked at me as if I had three heads. I stopped using it, the problem disappeared. No mystery there then. It also seemed to make a feature of my dark circles rather than disguise them, but I've learned a thing or two since then.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/10/2016 21:56

I suppose I could try MAC lipstick with Vaseline under but why?
There's so many better ones out there that won't need all that faff.

thegoodnameshadgone · 22/10/2016 22:02

My partner bought me Creme de la mer and I swear it's just the same as Nivea!

Shesgotelectricboobs · 22/10/2016 22:17

I like what clarins beauty flash balm does but can't stand the smell.

LadyCatherinesshades · 22/10/2016 22:42

fuckthat totally agree re the footner I was so excited by all the peeling, but made no real difference to my feet.

shins · 22/10/2016 23:00

Mac lipsticks : dry as shite. Nice colours but Bourjois are better and miles cheaper.

Pixi glow- rubbish. Nip and Fab better.

Liz Earle-Superdrug are cheaper and better!

MarchEliza2 · 22/10/2016 23:18

I too find Clarins Beauty Flash Balm a complete waste of time. What is it even supposed to do??

8 hour cream gave me a shock - I was given a sample selection containing this and, never having used it I thought it was a moisturiser - not something to rub into your skin before attempting to swim the Channel.

blueshoes · 22/10/2016 23:58

I am a long term Mac lipstick user - they have one colour that suits me to a T. I wear lip balm under the lipstick, which makes my lips look softer and allows the lipstick to be applied in a thinner less garish film.

I quite like the 8 hour cream smell. I find the weird medicinal smell quite soothing. I did have a laugh about the comment on smearing your skin with it to swim the channel.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/10/2016 00:04

Anything by Benefit.

Novinosincebambino · 23/10/2016 00:10

Touché Eclat - bad red reaction. Looks great under the eyes!
Beauty flash balm - just no.
Rose hip oil - did nothing for me
Creme de la mer - skin awful for weeks
Anything by dove

Does anyone on here use castor oil on their eyelashes? Heard its good but pregnant so not sure if it's safe?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 23/10/2016 00:15

Any of the redness reducing green creams are useless on me because I have massive pores on my roseacre which it just sits in, so it looks like I have tiny green spots on my face! Pointless

SallyR0se · 23/10/2016 00:24

Benefit mascara. So dry & clumpy. And the tube dried out before half way through... Same with YSL False Lash mascara.

RubyGoat · 23/10/2016 00:27

Clarins hand cream. Ok on first application, but it seemed to build up over the day (unless I really scrubbed my hands in between applications) & felt sort of siliconey. Nice smell though, shame.

Liz Earle skincare - several items - all of which seemed to have wheatgerm oil in. As does the Body Shop Vitamin E face wash. Both made me break out appallingly - I used the Body Shop stuff over summer for a few weeks, binned it & still have some marks from the blemishes it caused...

Body Shop Aloe Vera sensitive makeup remover. Within minutes my entire face looked & felt like I'd been thoroughly slapped.

John Frieda Frizz Ease serum - I used to have super long hair (mid thigh length) & this was one of the first affordable anti tangle serums that worked. Trouble was, it made my hair look a greasy mess if I dared brush it after application.

Lush salt shampoo. Couldn't get a brush through my (usually very shiny, smooth) hair afterwards!

Simple facial soap. Made me break out.

Clarins 3-step - particularly the toner. I used to get the ones for oily / combination skin, the toner made my skin feel tight (sometimes even sting). The sensitive toner did absolutely nothing for me. I'm allergic to the blemish gel & some of their other products as they seem to use a cheap antibacterial as preservative in many.

RockyBird · 23/10/2016 00:38

thegoodnames

It was once proven on telly that other than perfume creme de la mer is identical to nivea.

CointreauVersial · 23/10/2016 01:33

Pixi Glow Tonic. No effect whatsoever. I might as well have wiped my face with water.

itsbetterthanabox · 23/10/2016 01:51

Nip and fab glycolic pads. They give me a bumpy almost rash like texture to my skin. I think it's a reaction

Yakitori · 23/10/2016 01:53

Foundation - why? Face feels clogged up with gunk, doubles the length of my make-up routine to put it on, takes longer to get it all off again.

Bio-oil = like cooking fat. Revolting.

Fluffsnuts · 23/10/2016 07:44

That boots moisturiser everyone raved about and was sold out for weeks. Did nothing for me, was like putting highly perfumed water on my face.

Pizbuin one day long single application suncream- brought me out in mega hives!

NotYoda · 23/10/2016 07:49

It's brought back memories of my teens hearing about Clinique Toner. Sophisticated friend used it, so I tried it. It produces a satisfying amount of gunge on the cotton wool, but that's because it's like paint stripper!
