Popular make up and skincare things that don't work for you

We've all seen products recommended by others that just didn't live up to the hype for you. Here's some of mine:

Trilogy Rosehip Oil - I love other facial oils, but this left my skin feeling tight

MAC lipsticks - the colour range is amazing, but I find them all so drying, even the non-matte formulas. I have about 6 and there's not one I would repurchase

Clarins Hand Cream - less moisturising than the Vaseline Intensive Care I'm currently using

That's funny Jane - Boots curl creme is the best thing for my (very coarse and dry) hair ever!

Dermalogica and Liz Earl

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 21/10/2016 17:13

Omg yes creme de la mer. I luckily only brought a trial size pot as the smell made me gag. So highly perfumed and it did nothing for my skin at all. In fact due to all the perfume it made my skin react.

Micellar water. Stings like hell. No way would I put it near my eyes.

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream - again overly perfumed and wasn't sure what it was supposed to do as just sat as a greasy film on my skin and wouldn't sink in.

maggiethemagpie · 21/10/2016 21:00

Murad intensive c - ridiculously expensive moisturiser that made my eyes water every time I put it on. Like putting raw onions on my skin.

bingohandjob · 21/10/2016 21:10

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish. Skin reacted really badly, puffed up eyes - looked like those dreadful allergic reactions you see in the Daily Heil warning you about cheap beauty salons/hairdressers.

iseenodust · 21/10/2016 21:15

Simple products make me itch.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 21/10/2016 21:22

Clarisonic
Dermalogica
8 hour cream
Liz Earle
Slendertone Blush

madmomma · 21/10/2016 23:53

Clarisonic, clarins flash balm, 8hr cream, mineral makeup (makes me look old), pixi tonic thingie, clarins exfoliating toner- spots galore, clarins hand cream - the one with sunscreen in - it's vile, superdrug hot cloth cleanser - smells like BO, clinique city block - greasy and thick,

flamingnoravera · 22/10/2016 08:21

JohnCheese i also get a horrid allergy to YSL touché eclat. My eyes go red, scaly and puffy and the skin takes weeks to heal. YSL counter staff deny that it is their product and tell me no one has complained before. I hate the stuff.

Pupsiecola · 22/10/2016 08:22

Clarins Eau Dynamisante. Used it for about twenty years and love the smell. But read on here a few months back that it's known for causing headaches. Stopped using it and hardly get headaches now.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 22/10/2016 08:29

8 hour cream- stinky, greasy, clumpy Vaseline.
Elemis Marine Cream- horrid watery consistency and made my skin roll.
Any rosehip oil- far too non-moisturising for my ageing skin. As the great Caroline H says, "once you get past a certain age, a handful of crushed rosehips ain't gonna work no miracles"
Decleor- anything- overpriced, overdressed. Get thee to a Holland and Barrett or a Body Shop.
Anything by Bare Minerals- no, I don't want to rock the Barbara Cartland look, ta muchly
YSL Touche eclat thingy- stinks after 3 days. I do like to laugh and point at people who use it as a concealer though and then walk round looking like a panda in negative.
Double Wear- see above re Barbara Cartland
Any mascara over £10. Ditto any eyeliner. Best mascara I've tried recently is the double ended one from Maybelline in the purple tube. Cost me £4.
Alpha H Liquid Gold. Meh. Makes you think it's all scientific and technical with its instructions. Did nothing (unlike the GA acid peel from ebay)
Superdrug Radiance range- horrid, overperfumed, synthetic smelling, tightened my face something wicked. I bought this because people on here said it was like Liz Earle. It put me off trying the Vitamin E one which I have to say is lovely.
Flowerbomb and anything pink, flowery and sugary. Perfume should not smell pink, and flowers don't smell like that.

NicknameUsed · 22/10/2016 08:34

I don't find the Naturally Radiant range very perfumed at all.

Fairylea · 22/10/2016 08:38

Can't stand any Mac lipsticks. So overrated and drying. There are just as many nice colours and textures amongst the cheaper brands at Boots or Superdrug. I particularly like Max Factor ones. (Actually when I worked for Clinique for many years most of us bought make up from max factor as we liked it better and used to lie if customers asked and said it was Clinique BlushBlush).

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 22/10/2016 08:46

Max Factor, Maybelline and Bourjois are the bollocks.

I even did an experiment this morning, one side of my face in Chanel Beiges foundation, one side in Bourjois City Radiance. Does the expensive side look better? What do you think? Grin The only difference between the 2 (apart from the £££s) is the CR covers slightly less I think.

My current best foundation is Maybelline Liquid Silk or whatever it's called. Dream silk. Something like that. Fabulous.

ninnypoo · 22/10/2016 08:50

Benefit they're real- the mascara looked good but the pointy bits on the end of the wand used to stab my eyes so much they'd be streaming while I was trying to apply it! Wasn't worth the pain.

Too faced better than sex mascara- good initially but I looked like a panda by the end of the day

newpup · 22/10/2016 09:51

I love Liz Earle Cleanse and polish, the best beauty find I have ever made!

I have a Mac lipstick, bought on all the hype, the colour is beautiful but yes.. so drying on my lips!

someonescj · 22/10/2016 10:09

Double wear and double wear light - made my skin dry and patchy and I always looked orange.
La roche posay - raved about on here but made my skin dry as hell and break out like crazy.
Urban decay b12 spray thing - literally turned my face into a giant spot
Benefit they're real mascara - after stabbing myself in the eye with that awful wand I then lost so many lashes trying to remove the stuff

flippinada · 22/10/2016 11:07

I've never got on with Clarins Beauty Flash Balm - but I don't think it's meant for me (combination oily skin). Love their hand cream and hydra quench skin care though (not that I can afford it mind).

Used to use the Clinique 3 step skincare routine many years ago and the clarifying lotion is like paint stripper!

Diamondsandpears · 22/10/2016 12:35

Clinique 3 steps. It burned and not in a good way!

MrsT2007 · 22/10/2016 16:06

Clinique 3 step pissed my skin right off
Touché Eclat. Allergic
Benefit mascara, rubbish. Crumbles.
8 hour cream is great but it effing stinks!!
P20 sunscreen. Cheers for the hospital trips and permanently damaged skin.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 22/10/2016 16:10

double cleansing.

Silverstreaks · 22/10/2016 18:05

Liz Earl cleanse and polish - red and itchy.
Double wear - orange, scaley and itchy.
Any powdered mineral make up - haggard and itchy. Even the lily lolo one that doesn’t have Bismuth in it.
L'Oréal eversleek shampoo and conditioner which is supposed to be silicone free. I nearly writhed my scalp off. Awful stuff.
Benefit They're Real mascara - clumpy, slidey and flakey. Weird.
Oil cleansing - did nothing for me. Luckily I didn't break out like lots of other have.
No doubt I've wasted my money on much more but at least pass it on to my sister before she bins it if it doesn't suit.

Korean beauty products which I learned about here have been fantastic though so all is not lost.

spankhurst · 22/10/2016 19:08

Any expensive shampoo or conditioner. Total waste of money.

I love Touche Eclat, though. Am v v pale and it matches and blends perfectly.

Sweatynetty · 22/10/2016 19:28

Those who find Mac lipsticks drying - try wearing them with a TINY dab of Vaseline underneath. Sound obvious but it makes them so much more wearable.

Things that don't work for me:

~ Bare Minerals. Total shite. Drying and sits in my pores. Moved onto Laura Mercier and never looked back.

~ Touche eclat. There are a billion other profits on the market that do the same for a fraction of the cost.

~ Redken All Soft. No different to any other shampoo.

~ RMS Beauty Master Mixer. Make up bloggers RAVED about it. I spent £30 on it for it to be totally underwhelming.

~ 8 hour cream. Reminds me of hoof ointment I used to put on my horse.

Sweatynetty · 22/10/2016 19:29

Products not profits. Fucking iPad.
