Bah, semi-colons - shifty little feckers. I have to spend quite a lot of time teaching people how to use them these days, and I would still avoid them like the plague where possible.

CV and Rose, thank you. I hope dd will mellow in her attitude to dh as time goes on. Although if she leaves it too long, the auld geezer may be in his dribbling dotage by the time she decides to be nice to him. Only one more year before he's into his 70s!

My dm went off to the US in the early 50s to work as a physio in the segregated hospitals in the Deep South. And from there she went to Africa in the 60s and met my df.

Blackduck · 29/10/2016 21:25

MrsS I was where you are last year. Get your GP to sign you off with stress for 2 week and f&@k em. You know what - the world won't end. Then bigger off for a few days to somewhere nice....I'll come with you if you need company

addle · 29/10/2016 22:31

Sage advice from bd, mrs s.

Crem Flowers. When my last beloved cat was terminally ill we gave her chicken and sat with her and cried and cried the night before taking her o the vet. Mind you I got that really really wrong as so caught up with the cat didn't think about how much it would affect Dd who was doing secondary school entrance exams: stupid and heartless.

Stropps - with no real complications at this end I don't think Dd wld remember anyone else's birthday unless forcibly reminded. For her just part of emerging from solipsism of mid adolescence.

Hmmmmm to last episode of the fall

CointreauVersial · 29/10/2016 23:13

Love a semicolon; definitely my fave punctuation. I used to be all about the hyphen - but then I realised I was missing the point. Grin

herbaceous · 30/10/2016 00:03

A small and pedantic point. When a "-" is used as punctuation it isn't called a hyphen, but a dash. Or an "n-dash", if you're being technical, as it's the same width as an n. (They're slightly longer than a hyphen.)

IDismyname · 30/10/2016 00:07

Cream So sorry to hear about your DP (Dear Puss). May her demise be as pain free as possible, if that is how it has to be Sad

Saw DF this morning; they had showered, shaved and dressed him in 'proper' clothes. I think he felt a lot better. He's never what I would call happy these days,,but he seemed more content than I'd seen him for a while, and I fed him a bit of breakfast. The staff are great with him, and he has a male carer, which I think helps.

Gone away for a few days. Had too much to drink tonight again, but feel better about it all. Had awful flash backs last night. Hope tonight's sleep is better.
Sleep tight, Crepeys...

CointreauVersial · 30/10/2016 00:36

Oh dash it, Herbs, you're right.

magimedi · 30/10/2016 06:41

Berluddy clocks. Been awake since 4.45 ............. but I FEEL BETTER!!! Dizziness has just about gone & have come off one of the medications.

Am going to celebrate with a bacon sarnie, coffee & the paper (which I can now read) shortly.

bigTillyMint · 30/10/2016 07:12

Herbs, I love your explanation of how to use a semi-colon - bodes well for your course!

Stropps, DH still forgets his DP's birthdays. I think it is par for the teen course anyway.

Glad you're feeling better MM Smile

I am thrilled to find it is only 7 not 8am - slept very fitfully (though didn't hear NDNs party with my earplugs in) again having lots of nightmares, for obvious reasons, and have loads to do today.

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/10/2016 07:24

I have put dinner in the slow cooker, made tea, fed the cat, put the tea towels on a boil wash, cleared out a weevil infestation (thankfully confined to some pot barley, lentils and beans that were in a lock n lock box) and tidied the kitchen. Does anyone have any idea why the alarm went off at 5? Seven, I could understand, but not five, unless it made a unilateral decision to go back two hours.

I am making beef and mushroom pie for dinner. With cabbage and mash. I can guarantee that DD2 will eat the mash, some of the pie crust (suet crust, I think), a carrot or two, and some of the meat and then want to fill up on cake. She threw a hissy fit last night, had some rice, no green beans, scraped all the sauce off the chicken, picked out the mushrooms not to eat, and then went to bed. She was at Comicon all day with her mates, so was probably full of crap food.

I think if I get signed off with stress, the Nice Young Man on my team will probably follow. As that would just leave him in the office. I can't do that to him. We will muddle through, and I will take some leave when the other two get back from their jolly work trip and the other one is back from sick leave.

Have had no alcohol this weekend and feel no better for it!

MM - bacon sandwich, good idea...

Blackduck · 30/10/2016 08:06

MrsS that is laudable but you can't keep going because of other people. I knew I was dropping my team right in it but it was that or majorly crack up and probably be off for even longer....

Dreamt of mum last night - I don't remember my dreams usually. Feel distinctly odd

hattymattie · 30/10/2016 08:16

Mrs S - you are super productive even in your down time - I have so far got up, had a shower, had some coffee and am now browsing MN. We are eating raclette for lunch - minimum effort and crepes for tea!!

I shall try to integrate semi colons into my work - but afraid of looking ignorant so will probs stick to dashes (which I love).

Spend ages lying really still this morning so as not to disturb DH - rolled over to discover he had already got up Grin

IDismyname · 30/10/2016 08:18

Great news Magimedi!!
MrsS - I am in awe of your achievements and I've not even had breakfast. I hope you have plans to put your feet up later.

motherinferior · 30/10/2016 08:23

Agree with everyone re need to sign off, MrsS. And very lovely news of your dad, Cocoa.

I am going to attempt a swim for the first time in ages. Am looking forward to it.Shock

hattymattie · 30/10/2016 08:24

Sorry MM - I'm so glad you're feeling a little better.

Cocoa - great that things are looking more positive for your DF.

My pea sized memory means I scroll down and forget what everybody has posted and consequently only comment on the last two posts which are in front of my eyes Blush

Rosebag · 30/10/2016 08:30

I think I'm going to get a slow cooker...I used to have one years ago but have tended to prefer the pressure cooker but even that has its limitations...you can't go out and leave it, for one thing.

Still in bed and woke stupidly early...even taking into account the hour. Am still coldy and coughing. Everyman have an early showing of "I, Daniel Blake" mid morning which we plan to see en famille. Had a very dull evening last night....DS2 was taken out for dinner by PILs...we and DD were not invited. Then PILs dropped DS home, and drove off without coming in or even waving from the car. This is typical. Angry

So glad to hear you're feeling better MM

Blackduck · 30/10/2016 08:59

Oh Rose that would make me really cross!

Here I think veg curry is on the cards with Hill Station Salad....
boy has got his PADI (hoorah) and is doing seabed clean up today...

magimedi · 30/10/2016 09:05

What is Hill Station Salad??

Sound lovely.

Rose, your PILs are a bit (!) of a pain and somewhat ill mannered, aren't they?

Blackduck · 30/10/2016 09:18

Fennel, onion, cucumber, peppers, yoghurt dressing - a type of kachumber really....

magimedi · 30/10/2016 09:20

Yum!!

It's lovely when people post what they are having for supper/tea/dinner as it's great to get some inspiration for the daily grind of thinking WTF to eat.

Tonight we will be having cold chicken, salad & jackets (had roast chicken yesterday).

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/10/2016 09:23

Mmm, raclette... I went to a raclette party here the other week, thrown by someone I used to work with in Paris, who has his own raclette lamp. Yum. But can't eat too much of it.

Yes, what is Hill Station Salad? Does it need to go in the Crepey Recipe Book? We make something that the DDs call Chumbawumba Salad, which is a variation of Cachumber salad: red peppers, cucumber, chillies, fennel seeds, avocado, onion and mango.

I am tired of cooking when I don't have time. I am even more tired of hearing "there is nothing in the house to eat". A quick sort through of the freezer this morning told me that we have: salmon, chicken, nice sausages, fish fingers, mince, chicken livers, peas, green beans, butternut squash, ice cream, mushrooms, sweetcorn, garlic, ginger and garlic cubes, Thai spice mix. The fridge has naice ham, salami, bacon, eggs, cheese, myriad jars, more chicken, more mince, beef, mushrooms, carrots, peppers, parsnips, broccoli... and of course there are hundreds of tins, pasta and rice. There is plenty to eat - it's just that a little consideration and effort needs to be applied, not just grab packet and apply to face.

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/10/2016 09:24

Oooh, similar to ours, then, BD!

MrsSchadenfreude · 30/10/2016 09:24

Oooh, similar to ours, then, BD!

Stropperella · 30/10/2016 09:29

Rose, they sound like a right pair of charmers.

MM, so glad you're feeling better. But still take it slowly today!

Cocoa, it sounds as though your df has relaxed. That''s a very good sign for his general wellbeing.

Auriga, I'm very sorry your painful back saga is continuing. It is horrible, as I well know. I am going to get my MRI results/treatment options on Fri. I am lucky in that if I do no exercise apart from walking, I have days with no pain. But the slightest jolt can set things off again. And the 2 hours of driving I have to do on days when I work in school are a problem, to put it mildly. This will get a lot worse in Jan, when I will be also needing to drive to Bath one day a week. The other big problem is of course being self-employed... I am dreading what the doc will say on Friday.

Dd didn't forget dh's birthday: she gave me to understand he could stuff his birthday up his arse. Rose and CV had it right. :)
