So I'm having drinks with Gordon at No 11 next week - what should I wear?

Smallish event. Early evening, will probably go out for dinner afterwards (not with the big G!).
Don't want to look like I'm up from the cuntry and overdressed, don't want to turn up in smart day wear if in fact everyone else is in cocktail dresses.

Straw poll then - what do you think?

At the risk of being poncier than poncey, I went to a drinks thing at No 11 with Gordon Brown. It was a while ago, maybe a couple of years, and I was there in my capacity as a trustee of a charidee. There were a few minor celebs (Gary Rhodes, Richard Branson, Peter Bazalgette) and lots of representatives from charity and business. As far as I recall there was a lot of after-work wear with a slant towards going out. I'd go for the Armani suit with some stunning jewellery and high heels.

Aloha · 02/02/2007 14:05

Ooh, the 'power panty' has a 'double cotton gusset that opens' - saucy! That should get the party going!

expatinscotland · 02/02/2007 14:05

People don't really find him sexy, do they?

I mean, those polls are all answered by drunken 14-year-old boys having a laugh, right?

Eeeeeeeeeewwwwwwww.

scatterbrain · 02/02/2007 14:07

May I lower the tone and ask about these pant things ??

They have a cotton gusset that OPENS ??? I read something about Kelly Osbourne at the weekend - said she was wearing some and looked so funny she showed her Dad - but forgot her "fanny was hanging out" - am very mystified !!!

Would like to get some - but what are they ? crotchless ???

Aloha · 02/02/2007 14:10

Quite a few of my old editors have been to this sort of thing and worn high heels and a designer frock that could be worn to dinner.

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 14:10

ooooh that's interesting issy!

hmmmmm

this will be a bit more umm ohh I don't know how to describe it.
social conscience literary media types. if you can imagine that!

hmm. can't REALLY go wrong with an armani suit and good jewellry. and then I wouldn't have to go shopping. and the suit gives me a waist....

Do you have a very nice statementy jacket? Like a Favourbrook one (only not exactly that as that may be too winter evening wedding).

At the couple of events I've been to which might have been similar in vibe (gathering of Power Ladies, and milestone birthday party for media name, vibe in question being politico+swish) the people you noticed were the ones in the fab jackets. (Eg Katharine Whitehorn being gamine (at 80) in a Chinese embroidered one.)

Aloha · 02/02/2007 14:11

Armani suit would be fine if you like wearing it. I cannot wear suits any more since I stopped going to an office. Feel as if I am in fancy dress.

Aloha · 02/02/2007 14:13

Sorry, by 'fine' I mean lovely!

Issymum · 02/02/2007 14:13

I think charity types quite reasonably dress down, so I think you could afford to go one notch up from your No 1 option without looking like you tried too hard. I would probably go with Anchovy's suggestion of the simple but exquisite cocktail dress.

DeputyMacDawg · 02/02/2007 14:13

The spanx gusset is a sort of diamond shape open arrangement

Issymum · 02/02/2007 14:14

...but I'm also liking Bink's beautiful jacket.

scatterbrain · 02/02/2007 14:14

But why ??

Are you supposed to wee through the opening rather than pull them down ????

Aloha · 02/02/2007 14:15

It's a lovely thought, isn't it, Scatterbrain

scatterbrain · 02/02/2007 14:16

Is that what you are suposed to do then ??

Ewwwwww !!!

Soapbox · 02/02/2007 14:17

Believe me, they are such a performance to get in and out of, that you will be glad of the open gusset - if only to wee though

Sorry TMI, I fear!

DeputyMacDawg · 02/02/2007 14:18

yes, on the gusset thing, it's for peeing through.
The pants go from your knees to your boobs, impossible to pee otherwise

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 14:20

I think I'll go armani. I'm just not the shape for an exquisite cocktail dress at the moment. SOB

Killer heels and a massive cocktail ring.

Done?

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 14:21

you will notice that I am COMPLETELY ignoring the parallel gusset conversation

mousiemousie · 02/02/2007 14:21

Why not attempt to seduce Gordon or Sarah while you are there, that would give you much more exciting dress options and be a lot more interesting for mumsnetters

This current mission lacks excitement, and the armani suit sounds pretty dull.

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 14:22

a but the 23 carat aquamarine ring is a knockout

eueueueueugh to gordon. no no no no no no no
sarah doesn't do it for me either but if she is there I will certainly try and chat to her

CountessDracula · 02/02/2007 14:23

pph I would go for a slightly dressed up after work look (not TOO worky though as there may be some if you then say you don't work atm?)

That or you could try a theme with dh, maybe something like {http://www.escapade.co.uk/Sexy-fancy-dress-hire/Gimp-Miss-Whiplash-Costumes-X35-38-X35-3625.asp\this?}

FrogPrincess · 02/02/2007 14:23

are we coming back to my suggestion of earlier then?

By FrogPrincess on Fri 02-Feb-07 13:27:05
pretty but simple dress, just above the knee, and that Chanel coat you once told me about?
but no undies (cheap thrill for your dh)

Forget the no undies suggestion now, the big tight crotchless panties are much kinkier

CountessDracula · 02/02/2007 14:24

well bugger
try again
