So I'm having drinks with Gordon at No 11 next week - what should I wear?

Smallish event. Early evening, will probably go out for dinner afterwards (not with the big G!).
Don't want to look like I'm up from the cuntry and overdressed, don't want to turn up in smart day wear if in fact everyone else is in cocktail dresses.

Straw poll then - what do you think?

Stick on a pair of spanx then

Yes no 2. would be right I think!

marymillington · 02/02/2007 13:36
  1. I think
Smart, elegant, true to your own style. Def not cocktail gear.

(swoons at very idea of getting to meet Gordon)

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 13:36

oh snap coddy!

I would say option 2, and I like Soapy's suggestions. I liked cod's first comment too, but realise it was less than helpful

Is it possible that this is one of those events where no-one really knows what's expected, and therefore it won't matter unduly, or are you the lone up-from-the-country person? Not that you are like that, obv. When I had to go to Buck House I fretted endlessly and then discovered that every style imaginable was covered because no-one else knew what they were doing either.

Blackduck · 02/02/2007 13:37

Would anyone seriously wear that dress...you'd look like a demented ostrich....

Anchovy · 02/02/2007 13:37

Deffo 1, I think. I would really not like Gord to think I had gone to any particular effort or that I was dressing up in honour of the occasion. Particularly if I was going as a spouse - what you want to avoid is the "oooh, I'm quite excited about this and I don't get out much" look. I would go for the "I am effortlessly chic and have just popped in to have a drink with you, which I am interested in, but I have not gone out of my way to gussy myself up" look.

You need one killer piece - either jewellery or a fantastic handbag. And very nice shoes.

I think a simple frock is always a good idea. No bother about matching anything, looks pretty and fashionable and as if you have Made An Effort, without actually making one. Plus heels and nice bag. And if you are Spouse it doesn't matter if you don't look like a killer professional.
Do let us know what he was like in real life.

Soapbox · 02/02/2007 13:40

I really like the Vera Wang! I think the cut of it would give you the waist tbh!

Anchovy · 02/02/2007 13:44

Get Sarah to join up - I bet she would be good value.

"Am I being unreasonable: DH will only give me "fiscally prudent" amount of housekeeping"

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 13:44

mmmm but tamum there will only be about 30 of us and the others will be v interesting and I'm quite interesting even though I'm only a spouse on this occasion.
and who knows who will end up being at dinner. so I don't want to look completely different.

yes effortlessly chic is obviously the look to go for but it was much easier to achieve that when I weighed 8 stone. and had a waist.

DAMN that 4th child!

will peer at vera more closely

Hmm, yes I can see that with 30 of you that's more of a problem. Oh they'll love you though, don't worry! I bet the Spanx +Vera Wang will be great.

foxinsocks · 02/02/2007 13:48

would think at those sorta things, most people arrive as if they've just been to work

last similar thing, I wore a dress (nicer than one would normally wear to work, but not necessarily more formal) and a work type jacket and that seemed fine

Aloha · 02/02/2007 13:48

I honestly can't imagine an early evening drink with Gordon and Sarah Brown will be a festival of cutting edge fashion.

SherlockLGJ · 02/02/2007 13:48

@ Aloha

foxinsocks · 02/02/2007 13:49

a mix between 1 and 2 from your list I would say

What do you hope to achieve by going exactly? This should determine what you wear

Eg
hoping for a peerage
wanting to start affair with Gordie and/or his wife
bug the place to sell secrets to journos
just going to have something to name drop about
looking for a job
wannabe the new Carol Caplin for Sarah

PrincessPeaHead · 02/02/2007 14:02

not hoping to achieve anything. asked if I wanted to go, and thought it would be a bit silly not to really. I mean, why not?
I suppose I'm hoping to meet some interesting people and have an interesting evening.

not sure about the vera dress. I think I'm going to have to go somewhere and try lots of things on. but thank you for your help - I have a better idea of what I'm looking for!

and I'll order coddy's pants in any event
