Do you wear shorts in the summer and what size are you?

I never wear shorts, I don't even own a pair. But we are going on a camping holiday next week, with lots of time on the beach, cycling, walking etc. It just strikes me that shorts with a t-shirt and a hoody for if its chilly is going to be much more practical than jeans.

I'm a size 12, no neither thin nor massive. I have quite chunky thighs though, and a varicose vein that I'm really self conscious of. Will I look ridiculous in shorts?

Good on ya OP! I agree that shorter shorts are much more flattering than mid-thigh/just above the knee.

ScarletForYa · 30/07/2016 18:36

I've been every size from 10 to 18.

I do not wear shorts even when I'm slim. I think shorts are only for those with good legs.

NatalieRushman · 30/07/2016 18:39

I'm a size 6. Never wear shorts.

BoaConstrictor · 30/07/2016 18:46

I'm almost 40, size 12/14 with BMI of 25, squat legs with chunky thighs, visible cellulite & varicose veins.
Of course I wear shorts! They are the ideal item of clothing for the activities you describe. Ideally, I'd like long, lean legs and, as a result, I don't wear them often day to day (eg a Saturday with a trip to the park, lunch & supermarket) as I have more flattering clothes but I would definitely wear them for the sort of thing you're doing & on other occasions too when I remember my legs are never going to get better than this.
I do only wear one pair of shorts though. A pair I got in M&S over a decade ago. They're quite thick, well cut & a bit shorter than I had previously bought.

BoaConstrictor · 30/07/2016 18:49

The brilliant thing about shorts is no chub rub (at least not for me). I realised I look much better walking normally in shorts than I do trying to avoid my thighs rubbing together in a dress or skirt.

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/07/2016 18:50

If I was a size 6 I'd wear shorts in December!

Do you just not like them Natalie?

59, and size 10. I wear shorts when it's very hot, or I'm in the garden/walking cressethound. Between mid thigh and knee length, but would not wear the mid-thigh length to go shopping. But, it's my spider veins that make me self conscious, otherwise I think they would be fine.

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/07/2016 18:59

Boa we could be twins.

I have no intention of wearing my shorts around town etc, they will be strictly for beach, campsite, walking, cycling etc. They look OK but I own lots of things that look better. But dresses aren't great for cycling or putting up tents in!

Size 12.

I never wear shorts. Ever.

They look awful and I'm self conscious and unhappy in them.

I'll cheerfully rock a short skirt, but NEVER shorts.

swampytiggaa · 30/07/2016 19:01

I'm almost 47. Size 10/12. Wear shorts in the summer - the ones that come to the top of my thighs iykwim. I run and wear very short shorts for that. I have lovely legs :)

BTW I live in a holiday destination in Devon. Locals wear shorts and flip flops most of the year and holiday people of all shapes sizes and ages wear shorts and tbh no one notices what anyone else is wearing.

Go for it and enjoy your holiday x

thehousewife · 30/07/2016 19:13

I own 4 pairs of those next shortsighted various colours. I live in them in the summer. I'm a 12. 38 too. I couldn't give a stuff what people think about my legs. I even wear them to work, albeit it's v casual wear. Go for it, you'll never look back!! Winkno thigh rubbing either!!!

Fomalhaut · 30/07/2016 20:38

No. Not even when I was a size 6-8.

Skin too sensitive to the sun, and they just don't suit me.

MammouthTask · 30/07/2016 20:48

OP enjoy your hols and your shorts!

Fwiw, I'm a size 18, 50yo and do wear shorts. Why not wearing some?

blibblibs · 30/07/2016 22:16

I don't think it really matters what size you are, it all depends on the shape of your legs.
Mine are awful and I haven't worn shorts since PE in school, 25+ years ago. But BF who is at least 3 dress sizes bigger than me looks fantastic in shorts as the shape and proportions of her legs suit shorts and skirts and skinny jeans

JaceLancs · 30/07/2016 22:40

52 size 16-18
I wear shorts but only on holiday in a hot country
Even with fairly chunky thighs I think they look ok on me
I stick to plain dark colours, usually linen and wear them just above the knee

junebirthdaygirl · 30/07/2016 23:50

I'm mid 50s 5ft 6 and size 14 and love my shorts. Have linen mid thigh ones from monsoon and similar. Begin every summer by wearing them all during sun holidays then afterwards at home when legs are not so pale. Wouldn't really go downtown in them just around the house or out walking. But then again lm 26 on the inside so big shocked when people much younger say they are too old for shorts. Make me feel young and carefree.

NatalieRushman · 31/07/2016 00:12

Jemima they just make me feel self concious about my legs. For some reason, dresses and skirts just don't feel as exposing.

gemandjule · 31/07/2016 13:20

I'm 50, small, short legs and size 12. Do some running so legs reasonably toned.
I wear shorts all the time on holidays even when not abroad but I go to very low key fishing village/beaches and boating type holidays so not sophisticated!
This is me. Not beautiful but don't think embarrassing either

Do you wear shorts in the summer and what size are you?
neveradullmoment99 · 31/07/2016 15:08

Yes. 48 here and wear shorts when i am on holiday. All sorts of lengths. Here [ in shitty scotland] I wear shorts that are low thigh or knee length but that is because the weather is rubbish. If it was warmer then yes. My legs are ok. I am a size 12 and 5ft 5. I think they look ok.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/07/2016 15:09

gemandjule you look fine :)
Similar to me in shorts!

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2016 22:29

Hell yeah! And I'm 50 in February! It has sod all to do with age.

I'm a size 12; my legs are pretty good, but my knees are a bit more knobbly than they used to be.

I don't wear them often - tends to be when it's really hot, or if I'm at the beach/having a picnic/riding a bike, where knicker-flashing is a danger in a skirt.

The fit is all-important - there are definitely unflattering styles around. Just like any sort of trousers, you don't want them riding up your bum, too-tight on the thigh, or flapping around your knees. I think some people make the mistake of believing that long shorts (just above the knee) are more flattering, but I think mid-thigh or shorter is the way to go.

And I think they look better with a loose-fitting top (cami or shirt) than with a tight teeshirt.
