Do you wear shorts in the summer and what size are you?

I never wear shorts, I don't even own a pair. But we are going on a camping holiday next week, with lots of time on the beach, cycling, walking etc. It just strikes me that shorts with a t-shirt and a hoody for if its chilly is going to be much more practical than jeans.

I'm a size 12, no neither thin nor massive. I have quite chunky thighs though, and a varicose vein that I'm really self conscious of. Will I look ridiculous in shorts?

45, size 16 and I wear shorts. I find long ones less flattering that shorter ones in fact, but I am 5ft11 and longer length things aren't that long really.

phoenix1973 · 30/07/2016 06:58

Yes. Size 14.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/07/2016 07:01

Oh, I have cellulite and varicose veins etc, but the veins aren't that obvious from a distance, and really, who gets that close apart from DH who is delighted for me to get my legs out?

Huldra · 30/07/2016 08:28

12 in my mid 40's and don't wear them and never have. I have short muscular legs and they generally look shit on me and not that comfortable. I have got one pair this year from Debenhams that don't look too bad, they are quite longish and not too slim fitting. I have been in 30 + degrees for days and still not worn them! I find those very thin cropped trousers much more comfortable and keep me cooler. Next year I need new look to start making them knee length, longer very floaty shorts would suit me.

Very short ones look and feel awful on me, longer ones always seem too thick material. Why have sweaty thighs and colder shins?

startwig1982 · 30/07/2016 08:30

I have two pairs of chino shorts from Boden. I generally dislike my legs as they're chunky, but these are knee length and (I think) look ok. I'm a size 12 at the moment.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 30/07/2016 08:33

Shorts are great. Far more practical than jeans or skirts in half decent weather.

I am size 10/12 and always wear shorts if camping or nice weather

I can never really understand when people who happily wear skirts & jeans have issues with wearing shorts. They don't show any more leg off than a skirt and don't show your arse off any more than jeans so why the stress?

mrssmooth · 30/07/2016 08:35

Jemima, I'm a size 12-14, could be more toned but hey ho. I also have a massive sticky-out varicose vein right at the back of my knee which is almost black, and I have raised blue veins that are also quite noticeable. So rather unsightly legs from my knees up. I tend not to wear shorts, but I do have a couple of pairs which come to my knees so hide the majority of the yuckiness. I've been paranoid about it for years (it's been there for nearly 14 years now) but recently I've just thought "sod it, who cares?" I look around and see what some other people are, ahem, wearing and think "well if they can wear that, then I'll wear my shorts"!! I know exactly how you feel though, and no, you will absolutely not look ridiculous in shorts! Enjoy your holiday.

Eastpoint · 30/07/2016 08:35

Yes, I'm late 40s, 5'6" and weigh 9 ½ stone. I dogwalk or run in them. I wouldn't wear them to go shopping or out to lunch but I live in London zone 2 . Short GAP shorts, longer than my teenagers wear but def not mid-thigh.

JudgeLionelNutmeg · 30/07/2016 10:06

Yes, I'm a 14-16 with dreadful thighs and fat knees so I only wear shorts on the knee or just below but as I'm also short at 5'3" they tend to stop a bit lower down on me anyway

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 30/07/2016 11:57

33 size 16.

I have some denim shorts and some board shorts. Ridiculously, this is the first year I have ever had slim enough thighs to wear shorts comfortably - I've always found (even when I was thinner my legs never were) they ride up in my crotch and look and feel awful.

The ones I've got a stretchy high waisted with a mid thigh length. Superdry have some lovely chino style which I want but I've spent all my holiday allowance for clothes!

iklboo · 30/07/2016 12:06

I never wear them because I end up looking like Lofty from It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

teddygirlonce · 30/07/2016 12:07

Absolutely not...shorts are for children and teens...

user7755 · 30/07/2016 12:16

^

And that is why so many people have issues with body confidence and spend their lives feeling uncomfortable. Ridiculous rules about who should wear what and when. OP, if you like it, wear it. If someone else wants to live their life by a ridiculous set of 'rules' it says more about them than you.

Am hoping that teddygirl' comment was tongue in cheek and it bypassed me Confused

dementedpixie · 30/07/2016 12:22

How ridiculous, of course they aren't just for children/teens. Why should we swelter in long clothing when your legs can get fresh air in shorts? I don't care if people think I look ridiculous as long as I feel good

LockedOutOfMN · 30/07/2016 12:28

Wear shorts, OP! Comfortable and practical for the activities you describe and definitely give the feeling of "holiday".

I have shorts from H&M in size 36 (think that's a UK 10?), from other shops like Mango in medium, and from Zara in both medium and large. I do hate tight clothes, especially around the crotch, and I tend to wear shorts with a bikini top so better if they're loose-ish around the waist.

LockedOutOfMN · 30/07/2016 12:30

Oh yeah board shorts are also really popular this summer; I haven't got any myself (mostly down to rationing my clothes spending).

Ruddle91 · 30/07/2016 15:34

Age 24 size 14/16 long legs at 34 inside leg, I wear shorts. I have no cellulite and walk a lot so my legs are quite toned.

Ragwort · 30/07/2016 15:39

I am 58 and size 14 and wear shorts - not skimpy ones Grin. I might wear them in public if I am going for a walk/to the beach etc but probably if I am going out for a meal.

But really, do you think people look at you and think 'she's too old/fat/ugly to wear shorts' - I honestly rarely notice what other people wear - and as my mother always says, most people are so obsessed with what they look like themselves that they rarely look at other people.

And if some people really do judge you for what you wear - do you care about their opinions?

Floisme · 30/07/2016 17:16
  1. 8-10. Took some just above the knee on holiday. Not my best ever look but perfectly acceptable.

In the event I didn't wear them cos, when it's really hot I'm far more comfortable covered up. Hate the feeling of cooking flesh.

AliceInHinterland · 30/07/2016 17:32

I am 33, short, a bit overweight, pasty, cellulite, varicose veins and blotchy calves from ingrown hairs (picked by me). My legs do not look great (though they are amazing in what they can do). If the thermometer hits 26 or so I will bring out the fairly short shorts. I agree that I would feel more silly wearing jeans in that heat. If I see other non- model looking women in shorts I just feel a good old rush of solidarity. I wear them round the house and garden a bit first to get over the terrifying novelty. Then I love it!

Chewbecca · 30/07/2016 17:38

Yes, short, thick legged size 16 & I wear them, they're better than dresses or skirts for sightseeing due to chub rub Blush

My faves are from Fat Face last summer, white, denim, just above the knee. Very comfy, go with loads of lovely tops and as flattering as they're ever gonna be. I wear them for most of the summer!

Chewbecca · 30/07/2016 17:39

these may be the same I recommend highly

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 30/07/2016 17:41

Yes. I'm 49 and a size 14 mostly and still wear shorts in the summer, but not short shorts - more almost-to-the-knee shorts. But then it's bloody hot in summer in Australia. I do spend more time in cargo pants than shorts though - shorts are only for the killer-hot days.

DavetheCat2001 · 30/07/2016 18:00

43, size 8.

Out in Spain on hols at the moment and living in shorts ( mid 30's temp)

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/07/2016 18:16

OK have got the shorts. Decided to size up to a 14 and wear a belt as the 12 were really fitted on the thigh and they looked better a bit looser. Mid thigh definitely looked better than just above the knee.

Now I just need sunshine!
