Do you wear shorts in the summer and what size are you?

I never wear shorts, I don't even own a pair. But we are going on a camping holiday next week, with lots of time on the beach, cycling, walking etc. It just strikes me that shorts with a t-shirt and a hoody for if its chilly is going to be much more practical than jeans.

I'm a size 12, no neither thin nor massive. I have quite chunky thighs though, and a varicose vein that I'm really self conscious of. Will I look ridiculous in shorts?

Never too old to wear shorts! I'm 41 and size 8. When it's warm enough I always wear shorts. I used to wear dresses but that's not practical climbing up and down in the playground with DC.

user7755 · 29/07/2016 20:52

Coconutty - maybe overthinking it?

If you're comfy in them, wear them.

IveGotCheese · 29/07/2016 20:56

27, size 16 and I would never wear a pair of shorts. I'd rather die of heat stroke than show my arms or legs.

I am so jealous of women my size or bigger who dare to wear shorts or dresses in summer. Wish I had their confidence Sad

BellaVida · 29/07/2016 20:56

Early 40's. Size 14. Wore shorts this summer for first time in years. Got fed up of covering up and sweltering while DH & DC all wear shorts. Decided to hell with it and people can judge if they want! I got fitted shorts to just above the knee in navy & beige to go with everything. Felt great Smile

doctorboo · 29/07/2016 20:56

I'm 33, size 12-14 (more 14 at the mo) and my legs are tree trunkesque and riddled with varicose veins - on one leg they meander from my toes right up the back of my thigh! Blush

I've been wearing some khaki linen shorts from Matalan. They've not been worn out of the house/garden yet, but I might do. I have been wearing a knee length skirt though and no ones run away screaming, which is a relief Wink Grin

SpaghettiMeatballs · 29/07/2016 20:57

Go for it!12-14 here and I wear them when it's hot.

I always go for the 14 in shorts so they are a bit loose and choose a longer style.

Ringadingdingdong · 29/07/2016 21:03

I'm mid thirties, size 14 and have short legs with good sturdy thighs. I avoided shorts for years and years, the mere thought of them made me panic. But now I don't have any fucks to give and want to be comfortable if I'm on the beach etc with my kids, so I bought some shorts this year. They are knee length from fat face. I think they look ok and don't feel self concious. When we were on holiday in Cornwall recently women in all shapes and sizes were wearing shorts in various styles. They all looked fine.

KeepOnPlodding · 29/07/2016 21:05

Size 16 here and wear shorts.

We were camping a couple of weeks ago and there were loads of shorts on the campsite worn by all sorts of shapes and sizes. I have some Next denim ones that are a nice length and a couple of pairs of M&S linen ones. I find the most unflattering length are those that end a couple of inches above the knee so neither here nor there.

That's one of the best things about camping - out of bed and straight into shorts, vest top and a hoody and you're sorted.

(Don't forget to take insect repellent though Smile)

clary · 29/07/2016 21:20

By the way I am a runner and usually run in cropped capri running trousers... but this year did a half marathon in June - decided I needed a shorter, cooler option and bought some running shorts these ones pretty much and did do the run in them - was relieved as it was mega hot! No one ran away screaming so that was a bonus Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 29/07/2016 21:28

Since when was mid 40's too old to wear shorts? Or any age for that matter!

I wasn't going to bother with shorts for this summer holiday but I was persuaded to after asking for packing advice here. So I have bought some of the Next chino shorts linked up thread. They are lovely. I'm 44, a very short size 16 with short legs and chubby thighs and I bloody well will be wearing my shorts and bikinis too.

YorkieDorkie · 29/07/2016 21:34

I'm 27, a size 14-16, reasonably tall and I have worn shorts for the first time this year with a longer top. Not short ones but covering about 2/3 of my thigh. I don't have great legs but I'm so over it. I think I feel okay in them!

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 29/07/2016 21:36

I'm size 8-10 but truly horrible shaped legs. I wear them though because no one has ever fainted with horror and I get hot. The next chinos are lovely

thisgirlrides · 29/07/2016 21:44

I'm a size 12 but have chunky ( cyclist) legs & unsightly veins so no I don't wear shorts. I go for dresses or skirts and lots of fake tan but big thighs + shorts don't do it for me.

Lonelynessie · 29/07/2016 21:47

I'm 28, size 14 here and wear shorts all the time. In the hot weather I lived in denim shorts and a t-shirt. I do have somewhat 'shapely' legs and I'm 5'9. I do have a little bit of cellulite but quite frankly, I don't care Grin Wouldn't care if I get judged, I like wearing them so I do!

Naicecuppatea · 29/07/2016 22:09

Love shorts. I'm 40 and feel more comfortable in them than a skirt, and tend to go for a just above the knee cut or mid-thigh. I like the Next chino shorts. I am a size 6-8 with slim legs from running, but don't think I'd care too much if my legs were any different.

BlueEyedWonder · 29/07/2016 22:18

I'm nearly 40, size 6/8 but only 5ft. For years I didn't wear shorts believing my legs were too short. Then one day I did. And the world didn't stop turning, nobody said anything and now I wear denim shorts a lot in warmer weather.

buckingfrolicks · 29/07/2016 22:21

i'm over 50 and fat. Do I give a flying fuck? Nope. I'm probably that woman you see out in shorts on holiday, and you think 'oh lord look at her...' but the fact is, I honestly think I'm gorgeous (I carry a mental image of myself as 17, svelte and lovely) and also I simply do not care what men, or women, think of me.

user7755 · 29/07/2016 22:24

Bucking - you're brilliant!

I also love blue eyed's realisation that the world didn't stop turning Grin

RebelandaStunner · 29/07/2016 22:28

Yes if its hot enough I'm size 10. I've recently been to a festival and 90% wore shorts no matter what height/size/age/skin colour/leg shape.
They are only legs after all.

carrie74 · 29/07/2016 22:32

Early 40s, 5'7", size 10, yes to shorts. I really like J Crew 4" ones, any shorter are uncomfortable in the camel toe area, any longer and they hit thigh in unflattering spot.
Nobody will ever care as much as you do, so if you're happy and comfortable, so is everyone else x

2LittleMonkeysJumpingOnMyHead · 30/07/2016 06:39

Size 12-14. Big legs. I've been living in some knee length denim shorts from sainsburys this summer. They are really practical, no legs rubbing, and I'm even getting slightly brown lower legs, which never happens!
We really do need to relax about this sort of thing, especially on a campsite: no one cares!

Hulababy · 30/07/2016 06:52

I never wear shorts back home. However I'm over in Vegas and been in California and it's hot. I've been wearing shorts most days and proper shorts too. I'm a size 12 but could do with continuing to lose weight (I lost a stone before we went away) but it's too hot not to. It was 121f earlier! TBH even shorts were too warm!
So for now shorts are for holidays abroad but after this fortnight I can definitely see the benefit of proper shorts!

Hulababy · 30/07/2016 06:53

I won't wear 3/4 shorts and cropped as I'm short - 5 ft - so they just look daft. I'm 43y btw.

In the past over worn dresses or linen trousers.

allegretto · 30/07/2016 06:53

I'm size 10 and only wear them on campsites! Varicose veins are my nemesis.
