Things you wish were true - kind of

I often look at ball gowns and full black tie regalia and wish that life involved these more often.

I am well and truly a jeans and hoodie girl who rarely wears makeup. But still wish I could swoosh around more often.

Thanks, Busy, currently lying on the sofa in skinnies and a stained sweater, but a girl can dream!

I bet you look a lot better in a birdcage veil than you think. And your partner sounds jealous - he's probably just peeved that men aren't allowed to wear such beautiful things. Smile

That red lipstick would work. I have red hair and teeth which aren't white enough. It looks shit on me
Or to have voluminous wavy hair
And yes to the boot cuts again....

Definitely hats. I actually bought a navy day hat with a big feather (from the 40's) and woosed out of wearing it.

I need my ovaries of steel to handle the looks.

It's ludicrous that a trend that looks good on no-one but Kate Moss should have been around for so long. It's time for pear-shaped women to get together and lead a fashion insurrection. Down with skinnies!

I see where you're coming from, Laurie. It seems one has to be a massive extrovert to enjoy wearing hats.

Hats really suit me (I have a massive forehead, so it's good to cover it up Smile), but am quite shy so have never summoned the nerve to wear one, even for a wedding.

I have a funny shaped head so the only hats that look good on me are woolly hats or beanies but I refuse to wear them because of the bloody hipsters.

Also love brogues but hate that they stole them too.

I'd love to be able to perm my hair. Big beautiful curls my hair is ruler straight and refuses to curl.

I'd love to have mermaid hair, I think it's beautiful but I'm a bit to old to carry it off, I think I'll have to wait a few years and have a blue rinse instead Grin

I also yearn for a tiara and a regency style muslin gown and Johnny Lee Miller

Shock You're right Busy

I'd love to look boho when in a dress.

I want a ( fake ) fur coat like Cruella de Ville wore and to sweep grandly into rooms! Grin

Another one here with poker straight hair that won't curl.

So on that topic... wigs. What do you think? I love the bit in Lost in Translation where Scarlett Johansson goes to the karaoke club in a pink wig. Sometimes when I'm time-wasting online, I choose the one I'd have in another life in which I'm a hip young thing who frequents night clubs, etc. It's long, with curly bits.

The only time I love my hair Grin

It curls beautifully, straightens lovely BUT if I do nothing with it, it looks shit and messy

I want mermaid hair like NeedAClever!

I told myself that, when I passed 30, I would be 'sensible' and cut off my hair, but bottled it. Now I've had a total reversal: have dyed my hair red and am aiming to go longer and longer as I get older and older. I have two inches to go and it'll be covering my boobs!

But the reality is more this...

I wear glitter/ shimmer or sequins most days! I realised a few years ago that I loved Strictly come dancing for 2 reasons, 1 Christmas is coming and 2 all the glitter and sequins. So I just started wearing them. Nobody has been shocked and I get lots of compliments.

Love the thought of people swishing around in regency dresses and carrying birdcages Grin

Go you nickdrake what kind of sequinned and sparkly things do you wear?

Do you know what else I miss? Guys in trousers. Fitted nice trousers, nothing against jeans (hey every woman has looked twice at that Bruce Springsteen cover) but I hate guys in those baggy grey sweatpants.

Op, your post sounds so much like me... live in jeans and black tops but could happily swoosh about!

lazycake I have a Scottish Widows style black swooshy velvet cape Grin

I bought it about 20 years ago at a stall in Camden, it's got the big hood, lots of heavy plush velvet.... and hardly ever worn. Afriend borrowed it for a masked ball she was invited to and made her dh film her twirling round the room in it !

I'd also love to just wear lots of random crap like Bubble from AbFab. I posted these on a thread the other day but it disappeared into the ether . It'd be great dressing like 3 yr old some days.

OMG, Joyce, I LOVE the idea of a masked ball! I have a masquerade mask, that I bought years ago because it was too beautiful to resist, but it makes me sad when I see it at the bottom of one of my drawers because I know I shall never wear it. Sad

The masquerade of my dreams would take place in an enormous golden mansion, with huge flowers arrangements and piles of fruit all over the place, plus a champagne fountain. There would be loads of trysts and intriguing and probably a massive orgy at the end. Grin I think swinging eighteenth-century style would be a lot more chic than the twenty-first century version, which seems to me to be all abut polyester-mix Ann Summers undies and meetings in dreary suburban locations.

Report
JoyceDivision · 21/07/2016 22:25

Would the orgy stain the cloak? Grin

When I first started my first full time job, I got paid and went to Debenhams and bought a purple satin bias cut fishtailed halter next dress for £150, again about 20 years ago.

It was about 4 foot too long and I hadn't teh figure (size 16, huge boobs that need permanent bra) for it and I have never ever been anywhere that would suit it. DH could tell when I was drunk as he'd come home and find me sat on the sofa wearing it looking at youtube for armed forces soldier homecoming videos, or babies / children / adults hearing for the first time.
