Talk to be about nose piercing...

Specifically;

(1) Am I too old? I'm 30.
(2) How much does it hurt?
(3) What is aftercare like?
(4) How long after having it done can I change the stud?
(5) If I change my mind after a few months and take out the stud, will the hold heal over? And will it leave a visible mark?
(6) Can I go swimming after I've had it done? Like, the next day?
(7) Where do you actually get it done? Tattoo place?

I want to do this but I'm nervous and naive. Any advice will be very helpful!

1. I don't think anyone would be too old for a nose piercing as they can be quite discreet. I get clear sparkly ones so you only see it when the light catches

1. Mine did hurt but I have quite thick skin

1. As you would any other piercings, 2 or 3 times a day with either salt water or saline solution.

1. I changed mine about 8 weeks later ( really struggled putting a new one in at first )

1. After a few months it would heal but I presume it would leave a small mark. Doubt it would be really noticeable though.

You're both wonderful people. Thank you. I was kind of hoping for a 'it hurts like hell and you'd look stupid' response so I could be a chicken and not do it . I really want it done.

You're 30? Honey, I had mine done this January, at the age of 52! And I've not regretted it for a minute. Get it done by someone good, and most people - people you've known for decades - will say "oh, but you've always had that, haven't you?"

Go to a good piercing/tattoo place. I went to an excellent place near me in SE London. My bloke was insistent on scrupulous after-care. Clean twice a day with home-made saline; don't touch it or fiddle with it for six to eight weeks minimum; don't wear anything on your face at night - including moisturiser - for that time (it can slide off the pillow onto your face) and be vv careful with anything that goes on your face too; he says that nose piercings go wrong afterwards more than any other type of piercing, and it's almost always because of people - usually women - getting stuff on them. And no, don't go swimming either (there are some ways you can protect it with petroleum jelly, but you do need to be careful).

Go back to the piercer when you want it first changed.

And it didn't hurt much - I took two paracetamol beforehand and in all honesty I've had more painful threadings.

So yes, a bit of care needed...but it's gorgeous. I love it.

mother I always think women in their 50s and 60s who look a bit 'arty' look incredible with nose piercings.

Thanks for all of that advice. The no-swimming bit freaks me out- I swim every day and couldn't live without it for a long period!

Yes, yes do it :) I am 37. Got mine done about 15 years ago. I cant remember the aftercare stuff but i didnt have any problems and i am usually quite sensitive with my skin etc.

I LOVE mine. Its small and subtle (at the moment gold, but sometimes i have silver or a sparkly stud, i did have a ring for a few years in my 20's). It makes me happy every day

The scar left is tiny only way I can see mine is by using the magnifying side of the mirror and looking really carefully. It's a tiny stud compared to say your lip which leaves a big hole.

I had mine done about 15 years ago. It was in for a decade or so. Didn't hurt having it done, and I can't even see a mark where it used to be.

1. I had mine done veeery recently, I am a couple of years younger than you, definitely not too old! (2) It hurt quite a lot for a couple of seconds, it's been totally fine since then, except when DS smacked me on the nose the day I got it done! (3) So far so good, cleaning 2-3 times a day with the solution they gave me or saline solution. (4) My piercer said three months, standard advice seems to be 2-3 months. (5) My friend took hers out after about six months & you'd never know. (6) My aftercare leaflet says to avoid swimming but not how long for. (7) Went to a tattoo/piercing studio, just walked in no appointment. It was v v clean which I liked!

I always wanted one as a teen as it went with my look, which was what we'd now describe as 'uber-chav'. My mum wasn't at all happy that I was an uber-chav and said a nose piercing would make me look even more common.

I had my nose pierced when I was a teenager, I took it out when I had some surgery a few years later and never put it back in. It healed over and I really can't see a scar from it; I can sort of feel a scar inside the skin if I sort of pinch it with my thumb up my nose (yuck, sorry ) My lip piercing left a deep, round dent but my bottom lip is large and covers it.

After years of no piercings and being "boring", I got my tragus pierced for my 30th birthday last week. Current guidelines are salt water twice a day, 6-8 week healing for nasal piercing. I definitely second the advice to go back to your piercer to get your first jewellery change. Much safer and easier

I got mine done about 8 weeks ago and I'm 36.
If always wanted it done since a teenager but I have quite a big nose so never had the guts as I bought it would draw attention to it.
Then a few weeks ago I thought F@*k it.... Who cares what anyone else thinks and got it done there and then.

And I love it!

I've had mine done for 15 years, I'm now 30 and still love it. Yes it hurts, but less than a cartlidge piercing. Mine fell out swimming in the sea after 4 weeks, and if I don't wear it for a day or 2 (when I've lost yet another one down the sink and have no spares!) It heals over! I'd definitely recommend it!

I chatted to DH about this last night. He's in the 'mid life crisis' camp and thinks I'd look ridiculous. I don't really care. He's a boring twat. I'm thinking of getting some of those stick on stud things to have a play and see what it'd look like before I take the plunge!

I love nose piercings but had no success with mine

The first time I had it done it hurt a lot (so much more than having a 10lb baby ) every time someone touched it I got an awful pain up into my eye and down into my face.
It utterly loved it and it sat very nicely in the indent bit of my nose.
I loved how it looked so much I persevered for 18months it hurt so much the whole time.

I then got told it was nerve pain I was getting by the piercer as it went up through my eye and across my face every time I touched it m. He said I must be pierced through a nerve line told me to take it out let it heal for a year and get it re pierced.

The next time I had it pierced I didn't feel I thing no pain at all but the piercing was further forward and I just didn't like the look right I preferred it in the indentation bit of my nose.

I'm now in the healing process again for attempt number 3 and I can get it redone on October 3rd time lucky hopefully

But I don't think you can go swimming then next day I think you have to wait 6 weeks

The only downside to them is that if you take the ring out the hole heals in about 20 seconds or st least that's how it feels

I have quite a few piercings and my nose piercing was the most 'high maintenance ' because I didn't realise how much I touched my face until it was done but definitely my favourite

I went swimming about a week after mine, and it actually seemed to make it hurt less. Perhaps chlorine helps.
And I had it done a year ago at 46 (yes I am having a mid-life crisis, but... blah blah).

notevernow Someone on the thread linked above said that we shouldn't see mid-life crisis as a bad thing. It's a time when we have grown into our skin and personalities, are more confident and don't give a shit what others think. A mid-life awakening we might call it!

MyotherkidscalledKai, mine has definitely been a crisis! But yes I love the outward manifestations - 3 stone lighter, new wardrobe, 8 new piercings, (small) tattoo. Sort of half give a shit what others think (not frumpy mummy any more!) and half don't.
Anyway, don't worry about being too old at 30. And ask people you know about tattoo places. Someone at work said "No, don't go there!" about one I mentioned. I went for a minor ear piercing to another one to sort of check it out for cleanliness etc. That's the one I've been back to for all the other stuff.

I had mine done around 20 years ago but haven't worn a stud for the past five or so, the hole is practically invisible. If you do it and later change your mind, you're definitely not left with a massive hole.

Yes it is a mid life awakening rather than crisis. I have wanted it since I was 14 but didn't due to fear of what my parents, work, grandparents, DH would say.

Do it! I am 37 and had mine done when 19 years old. I love it and actually a few people asked if I had always had it just after I had it done! I really like it- it suits my nose. (I am finally getting a tattoo later this year as well!)

I have also recently thought about getting this done! I'm going to be 38 this year and am seriously considering doing it before I'm 40 so that it can't be blamed on a mid-life crisis I like the idea of a mid-life awakening - I'm a lot more comfortable with my own looks/style now than I have been before.

But my question is - what if you get a cold or hayfever? Isn't it uncomfortable if you need to blow or wipe your nose a lot? Can you blow the piercing out?! As someone who's spent the morning sneezing because I missed taking an antihistamine, I need reassurance!
