How would you describe my style? (Home)

It's a French country/vintage look, but polished and nothing too florally. I draw a line with a lot of Cath Kidston bollocks but have some of her subtle things

So polished, country style and very chic and stylish, but NOT modern.

I would've said country/shabby chic but it's more collected and put together than that, if you get me BlushConfusedGrinWine

The red spottycushion covers are old and minging, but with 2 young DC's, it's pointless getting anything new!

trufflesnout · 10/07/2016 14:07

Yy squoosh, Cath Kidston is classic kitsch.

I don't think the original house is great. There's nothing wrong with neutral but why does neutral have to mean beige!? The mix of pretend-old woods and weird, unrefined modern style (see: kitchen counter) makes for a very odd feeling. It feels like someone wanted to 'design' it and have a strong aesthetic, but they weren't bold or educated enough in their choices and they've just ended up with bland.

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 14:07

Once they are old enough to stop trashing stuff, I'll get new bits Smile

I agree my kitchen is a bit C.K, my living room on the other hand is similarly colourful, but more retro modern.

I just love 'stuff'!

trufflesnout · 10/07/2016 14:12

Same Dave, I'm trying not to let stuff take over my life but it's hard because I love stuff. I've decided that perhaps I'll just whitewash my entire house and let the stuff be stuff. These shelves speak to me:

I love yours Dave.
Im on a CK Facebook page and there's a roaring trade in those 50's cupboards atm.

CamilleClaudel · 10/07/2016 14:24

Show us more Dave - what's through that mysterious dark doorway? Grin

I agree, actually, if you changed the spotty chairpads, the entire effect of the room (which I do like) would be different, depending on what you chose...?

We just changed the curtains in our kitchen (from a Dunelm greige with weird abstract shapes, courtesy of the previous owners, who appear to have been colour-blind, to an Ian Mankin ticking stripe) and it's completely changed the room.

Actually when the guy who came to measure for curtains told me that the existing horrors were Dunelm and rather expensive, I was a bit taken aback. I had them clocked for the curtain equivalent of those awful duvet and pillowcase sets that are the bedding equivalent of those shirt-and-tie-in-a-box combos.

CamilleClaudel · 10/07/2016 14:30

truffle, that's pretty much what we've done here. We won't be staying for more than a few years, so we made the decision to paint the entire house white with wood or sisal floors, and our furniture and belongings are what make it interesting.

PreAdvent13610 · 10/07/2016 14:47

Dave our are all between 18 and 25, they never stop trashing stuff.
I can almost walk across the dining room, DD1 had two days to empty student digs before starting job abroad, a voluminous amount never made it up to her room.

I always prefer houses where the style has evolved and is personal.

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 15:07

Ahh truffle, a lady after my own heart. I love your room!

Here are a couple of pics of my LR. Again a bit of a mishmash, but it's colourful (my 3 year old DD loves all the colours, especially the purple sofa!)

Dave I've got one of those cupboards bought with the bit of money my Nana left me. I agree you can fit shedloads in them but from the outside they look all cool and pretty :)

The house in the OP looks nice but is completely lacking in imagination or personal style. I know a few people whose houses look like that and yes I am a bit jealous because they're all loaded but in honesty I prefer my slightly scruffy house filled with interesting things that mean something to us.

That said I want to decorate later this year and am definitely veering towards pale plain walls and floors as a slightly more restful backdrop to all my tat things.

Littleballerina · 10/07/2016 16:33

op, it just looks like pages from a next catalogue.
My style is probably best described as unicorn vomit.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/07/2016 16:43

Love Dave's!

Hate the one in the OP. Boring, beige, and totally bleurgh. No imagination or personal flair whatsoever.

SucculentSoul · 10/07/2016 16:50

Love that purple sofa Dave. We need a new sofa and I am trying to get dh to go for a bright one but he wants grey Hmm

HopeClearwater · 10/07/2016 16:54

Dave your house is lovely. Way better than the anonymous made-to-a-recipe one mentioned by the OP.

elfycat · 10/07/2016 17:00

So Dave when are you starting your blog? Grin

PreAdvent13610 · 10/07/2016 17:01

I love Dave's kitchen, could imagine one of my best friends living there. Mines more conservative, but all mine. The knobs may go metal, the wood may get hammerited, who knows.

PreAdvent13610 · 10/07/2016 17:02

Whoops meant to be brave and post photo

KoalaDownUnder · 10/07/2016 17:10

PreAdvent, I love that too! It's lovely.

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 17:24

haha elfycat, I didn't think my eclectic collection of all sorts of different styles/colours would be many people's cup of tea!

The house the OP posted pics of has some elements that I like, but I'm too fond of colours to ever live in a neutral house.

I have a particular fetish for old antique cupboards and wardrobes. OH has complained often that he might as well move out as there is too much furniture!

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 17:33

..oh and a fetish for old Pyrex Grin

SimplyNigella · 10/07/2016 17:36

I love all of the eclectic interiors and bright colours being posted here. I'm a big Abigail Ahern fan and tend to go for dark walls and accessories with things we love, which rarely match but somehow work (I think because we really love them rather them buying them as part of a room set).

PreAdvent13610 · 10/07/2016 17:37

The Pyrex is lovely Envy
My fetish is for le creuset Hmm

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 18:03

Oh gosh i love my Le Cruset casserole dish!

Buddahbelly · 10/07/2016 19:09

truffle Those shelves are fabulous!!! Im still waiting to get a carpenter in to make mine in the alcoves besides the fireplace, then I oo shall have fabulous colourful shelves.

Most of my house is white , certain walls here and there are painted in aqua / greys and blues, but mostly I let my random bits of junk and artifacts Smile as dp calls them set the colours in each room.

That pyrex collection is amazing though dave I was gutted I missed out on a white and aqua set off ebay a while ago so gave up and started collecting Le cruset dishes and pans from tk maxx instead Grin

DavetheCat2001 · 10/07/2016 19:22

Unfortunately the nicer pyrex (in my opinion) are the American designs, and I have had to buy them from the US.

Occasionally a nice piece will come up on eBay, but the prices can be eye-watering!

I use all of mine too..I'm not precious about making a mac& cheese in any one of them!
