How would you describe my style? (Home)

youneedabiscuit · 09/07/2016 19:25

It's a French country/vintage look, but polished and nothing too florally. I draw a line with a lot of Cath Kidston bollocks but have some of her subtle things

So polished, country style and very chic and stylish, but NOT modern.

I would've said country/shabby chic but it's more collected and put together than that, if you get me BlushConfusedGrinWine

Dull as fuck?

Why does it need a name when they're not your pics that you've copied from someone else's blog?

Prefer Dave's pics, it doesn't take any creativity or imagination to furnish your house from the Next catalogue

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/07/2016 20:49

Am I the only one wondering why this is in Style & beauty? < misses point >
Surely it should be in Property?
Doesn't really matter in the scheme of things I know, but I was genuinely perturbed to see a kitchen and bathroom when I was expecting to be cobsidering - you know - someone's style. Grin

LaConnerie · 09/07/2016 20:49

Ok so I've read enough to know I won't offend you by being honest...

It's bland and completely lacking and personality or flair. It could be pages from the Homebase catalogue or a Wimpey showhome.

I can't bear matchy furniture and cream walks everywhere.

Why do you ask op? Or do I just need to rtft?

Shadow1986 · 09/07/2016 20:52

I'm not sure these are even OPs pictures - think maybe she's using them as an example of the style of home she likes, and she wants to know what the style is called so she can look up more inspiration perhaps? Could be wrong though.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/07/2016 20:55

Yes definitely too matchy - looks all bought off the shelf in one fell swoop. Also makes me think I can detect a whiff of the Shake and Vac!

DavetheCat2001 · 09/07/2016 20:55

No offence taken at all Buddah

I always think the more clashing sizzle you have going on, the less people's eye will be drawn to the fact you haven't mopped the floor for a few days (pointless with an unruly 3 year old)

The 1950's cupboard is a bit of a fave. Aside from anything it holds SO MUCH SHIT, it is invaluable in my chaotic life!

Fuzzypeggy · 09/07/2016 20:56

Why are you looking for a name for it op?

florascotianew · 09/07/2016 20:59

I really, really don't want to be rude, OP, but you did ask. And, since those pictures - I believe? - are not of your own home, I will be frank:

superficial
ersatz (fake)
cheap showhome
what an earlier generation would have called 'ghastly good taste' - ie bland and safe and lacking in personal integrity

Dave's style is not mine, but it does show - I think - genuine individual taste and I respect that.

CamilleClaudel · 09/07/2016 21:06

Cheap, bland and formulaic, now that I can be honest. Do people really think that looks nice? It's got that 'off the peg' inoffensive showhouse look, like it was decorated by a robot committee.

Dave's cupboard and bubblegum pink fridge are fun, though.

CamilleClaudel · 09/07/2016 21:07

And it couldn't be less French or country, OP!

I bet your house is nicer.

DavetheCat2001 · 09/07/2016 21:35

thanks for the nice comments chaps.

I know my style is a bit hectic, I just love so may different styles and things, I cram as much in as I can!

I admit to having a bit of a fetish for Pyrex!

NCreggo · 09/07/2016 22:09

Dave where did u get the cupboard? Did you paint it yourself ?

DavetheCat2001 · 09/07/2016 22:11

it was from eBay, and it was painted like that when I got it.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 09/07/2016 23:10

I'd call it 'classic Pinterest' or maybe 'classic mummy blogger'. Nice but lacking in individuality or even any sense that someone lives there.

I like it but I couldn't live in it. I'm far too messy for a start.

ScarletForYa · 09/07/2016 23:12

It's called 'blah'

Ahh no, I'm just jealous. It's gorgeous!

wizzywig · 09/07/2016 23:14

I like dave's house! It has life and energy. I can imagine feeling happy in there. Yes i like the OPs pics for the clean zen-like vibe but i think id feel depressed in it.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 09/07/2016 23:15

It's all beige! Sorry, too bland and impersonal for me. My home is filled with stuff I love and it all kind of goes together but all means something, was handed down or saved for or bought on our travels. The beige stuff looks like someone just tore that page from a Next catalogue and ordered it with no thought or love at all.

wobblywonderwoman · 09/07/2016 23:19

I think it's fresh and clean but probably minimal home with reproduction elements Grin

Our is similar but I do like to trawl salvage yards and charity shops to funk it up a bit.

youneedabiscuit · 10/07/2016 11:13

In all honesty, Daves looks more homely, friendly and welcoming than my style, I'll give him that 100%

I really like the style I've laid out as an example because for some reason it makes me feel calm and collected. It brings sanity and order to my world. I have to say though, as a visitor, I'd much rather Dave's wonderfully wacky kitchen. Not sure how it's close to Cath Kidston though, I don't see anything resembling her style.

It's funny because the vase and flowers match my style perfectly Grin

Oh and why are some of you MNetters wanting to get to the root of me starting this thread? Good grief Hmm

The question of why do you want a name for it was a genuine one, are you trying to search for things in that particular style, are you looking to hashtag something and don't know what to call it, do you need to describe it to someone if you are having a designer in, or buying a new home? Plenty of reasons why you might want to know, which may assist posters in trying to help you, so no need for the eye rolling.

youneedabiscuit · 10/07/2016 11:33

I'm just genuinely interesting so I can search for inspo X

OP have a look on pinterest. When you pin a picture, it will show you other similar stules so you can get an idea of what you like quickly. Have to say though, top ones are bland and Dave's is fabulous.

MargotLovedTom · 10/07/2016 11:47

I was always a fan of 'funky' decor - lots of colour and interest. Over the last few years though I've started craving a more restful bland environment, and decorated our kitchen much more in the style of the OP. I love it.

God help the child who lives there when they say they want their bedroom decorated with Marvel Superheroes wallpaper or with hot pink glittery paint Wink.

squoosh · 10/07/2016 12:53

'Not sure how it's close to Cath Kidston though, I don't see anything resembling her style.'

Really? Can't you see the polka dot chair covers, display of colourful 1950s style dishes, farmhouse kitchen table and chairs painted in pastel colours? All Kidston hallmarks I'd say.

PreAdvent13610 · 10/07/2016 13:13

Dave lose the red spotty cushion covers and replace with one of the greens from your amazing tiles.
Need sorry but greige catalogue chic
