Larverly, larvely clothes but £35 for a t-shirt. Give me a break

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 23/01/2007 12:59

He sounds like a nob.

So Johnnie is a good name for him.

Fits him like a glove.

Or a...jonny...

[arsed off with working mother comments]

[never bought Boden, never plan to, have seen their office in the arse end of Park Royal and sniggered though]

hunkermunker · 23/01/2007 13:00

wtf is a hotchpotch top?

KathyMCMLXXII · 23/01/2007 13:01

OK I admit it, I bought a hotchpotch top. I have no style and would never pretend to.
Not allowed to wear it, though, even as pyjamas. (DH and I had a deal when we got married that we would each ban an equal number of each other's clothes and the hotchpotch top was the first he picked.)

So true about the short torsos. Even if you have a nice tummy it's just not comfortable having the wind on it, and if it's one of those sequin edged tops it's all nasty and scratchy.

Fimbo · 23/01/2007 13:04

This Season's Hotchpotch Top . The colourways are awful - you would need to be very brave to wear it!

Jessajam · 23/01/2007 13:06

And I thought I hadn't bought any Boden-garments for myself because they are ridiculously expensive and somewhat poncey...turns out it was a subconscious awareness of the owner's utter obnoxiousness coupled with the fact I do not care about my family (am a FT WOHM)

Ds was bought a nice top and pair of trousers by MIL. Top was fine. trousers were so short I double checked they weren't meant to be long length shorts!

lucykate · 23/01/2007 13:06

this is the dress i like, but £79 , its just not worth £79

pollyanna · 23/01/2007 13:08

women's stuff is all a strange fit ime - waistbands on trousers very high and tops too short, (and they shrink in the tumble drier). The only thing I have bought from there recently was a green every day cardigan.

dh refuses to wear any of their stuff - when we went to one of those luxury family hotels lots of the men were wearing red Boden trousers

moondog · 23/01/2007 13:08

Lucy,I think it is (and will probably buy it)
We've been seduced into thinking that it's ok to buy stuf for next to nothing.
Johnnie is a tit but clothes last well, look nice, aren't fashion victimy and suit people with a bit of money who hate shopping. So,that's me sorted!

hunkermunker · 23/01/2007 13:12

Are they for people who are so beautiful they want to make other people feel better about themselves, so they wear ugly clothes?

moondog · 23/01/2007 13:13

I have some lovely linen Boden dresses and skirts that I have worn for a good four sumers nad they still look nice.

KathyMCMLXXII · 23/01/2007 13:15

Hmmm - just read the article - couldn't understand why everyone thought Johnnie was a t*t until I got to:

'He says he's just read an article in the Spectator saying teenage delinquency is caused by working mothers, a sentiment he agrees with heartily.'

Also: "I am anti-welfare state, anti-tax and how it's spent," he says

Great article though, quite a sharp analysis of the Boden appeal I thought.

cupcakes · 23/01/2007 13:16

I have already bought from this catalogue (with 20% off preview offer):

green tank top which is very nice
purple spotty dress which is nice but expensive full price - am hoping it will fit me soon or I'm sending it back
sassy jeans with pocket detail - have exchanged for a smaller size (yippee!) so still to see if keeping.

Will almost definitely buy for the children when my catalogue arrives.

MimmyPig · 23/01/2007 13:17

F*ck me, I agree with moondog

I've got the hotchpotch top that the model is wearing in the main picture. I'm telling you, it looks really nice on and 3 or 4 people have told me how nice they think it is. It's a really flattering shape for me for one thing, and I like the mismatched fabrics - it's not as if the colours are outlandish - they are quite muted.

Saker · 23/01/2007 13:18

But Moondog the thing is with expensive clothes is where the money is going. This is a dilemma I have continuously with clothes that you don't know who made it and why it is that cheap/expensive. At least with food it is marked fairtrade so you know that you are paying more for a good reason. I would like to know if Boden is more expensive because he is paying his labour properly or just because he is making a bigger profit.

cupcakes · 23/01/2007 13:19

I bet Johnnie's pr wouldn't let him get away with those working mother comments now. There are a few items in the catalogue such as linen suits which are being described as ideal for work.

Saker · 23/01/2007 13:19

Though I have to admit I have bought one or two things from Boden mostly for the children and have been quite impressed.

MimmyPig · 23/01/2007 13:19

Yeah, where is Malory?

I haven't read the article - I'm not the least bit interested in what the owner is like. If he's a nob, he's a nob but there are still a few nice clothes for women in there (and lots of frumpy ones as well, not denying that!).

LadyMacbeth · 23/01/2007 13:19

It's these new "I'm mad me" brightly coloured buttons that piss me off, I've seen quite nice things ruined by them, such as here and here

MimmyPig · 23/01/2007 13:21

I agree LM - there have been some quite nice coats ruined by daft, over-sized, brightly coloured buttons

cupcakes · 23/01/2007 13:21

I quite like those buttons. It is a bit cbeebies presenter though...

moondog · 23/01/2007 13:22

You know it makes sense Mimmy.
Fair point Saker. I have dwelled on this myself. The same would apply to M&S,Whistles,Coast and so on,not just Johnny though.

(If you are interested in this sort of stuff, have you read 'No Logo' Namomi Klein? You must.)

hunkermunker · 23/01/2007 13:23

Crikey, loads of expensive stuff is made for pennies.

If I'm going to buy sweatshop stuff, I don't want to be making someone uber-rich in the process

Cloudhopper · 23/01/2007 13:24

I suppose we are almost his target couple, give or take a few postcodes (prices have gone up so much darling), but after reading that article I wouldn't be seen dead in Boden.

Gerald Ratner's "crap" comment comes to mind.

How patronising - working women to blame for society's ills and the Countryside Alliance march (for a guy who lives in London?). Sums up everything I hate about this country.

Saker · 23/01/2007 13:26

I haven't read it - I will see if I can get it from the library. I have bought stuff that I would guess is probably made very cheaply (e.g. New Look) so am not great at living up to these principles but part of the problem is knowing what the alternatives are.

moondog · 23/01/2007 13:27

It changed my life Saker.
