As an over 50 (size 12) I have a set of personal "things to avoid" fashion rules.....Need to avoid skirts above the knee, avoid low cut tops, avoid sleeveless, avoid skinny jeans to name just a few..... But what should I actively seek bearing in mind I quite like not to be mutton as lamb but a bit fashionable?

I am 59 and I do not think about my age in relation to my clothing, ever. I wear what I like and what I think suits my shape and I feel good in. I don't give a stuff what anyone else thinks about my clothes and I happily wear all the things in the OP. No to rules!

Liiinooo · 02/06/2016 19:02

I'm 55 and would be lost without skinny jeans.

hollyisalovelyname · 02/06/2016 19:06

You'll be a long time dead....wear what you like.

I don't wear short skirts and haven't for 30 years as I have skinny legs I don't like. Nothing to do with my age (am over 50)

I occasionally wear sleeveless as I have skinny arms (swings and roundabouts innit)

I live in skinny jeans.

AnyFucker · 02/06/2016 19:22

Ah, ok. I have thought of something that isn't great on over 50's (I had to wrack my brains)

Ribbons in your hair

expatinscotland · 02/06/2016 19:25

I'm 45 and wear whatever the hell I want. I am very fit, no cellulite, muscular. Big tits. Life is short. Where what you feel comfortable in.

Floisme · 02/06/2016 19:30

I'm 59 and I have my own rules. These have changed as my body has changed but can still be summed up as, show off my best features and disguise the bits I don't like.

I wouldn't impose them on anyone else. Just because we're over 50 doesn't mean we all look the same. As Darklane says, check the mirror, not the calendar.

My only universal rule would be that 'mutton' should be reserved for when talking to your butcher.

EllenDegenerate · 02/06/2016 20:07

Glitter, hotpants and white cowboy boots.

Liiinooo · 02/06/2016 20:09

Anyfucker

yes and flower garlands.

drug smuggler buns
pigtails
anything with cutsey pictures like 'hello kitty' or 'frozen'

Just what I was thinking; basically anything that looks like it is designed for a primary school child - but this applies to all adults, not just over 50s.

echt · 02/06/2016 21:25

62 this year and wore plenty of shorter skirts in my 50s. The only reason I'm not now is that my knees are a bit porky and I need to get them back into shape with less eating and some running.

The things seems to be please yourself.

I live in Melbourne and notice in the arty-farty gallery/theatre circles quite a few older women, I'm thinking 75+ go absolutely mad in fashion terms and look utterly fabulous.

I'll get shot for this, but the black with red accents is the uniform for the 50s+ in Melbourne, rather like the bob haircut for middle- class married women when I lived in London.

thefudgeling · 03/06/2016 20:17

One of the most stylish women I know is 79 and looks fabulous in her skinny jeans. I'm always copying bits of her style and I'm 37.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/06/2016 20:20

I'm over 50 and have very good legs , they're about 30 years old I reckon, so I'm always in short skirts.

elizadolittlechoc · 03/06/2016 20:26

I'm over 50 and wear the leggings/tunic combo, skinnies and vest tops etc My age give away is the enormous nan-norks I seem to have developed; when scaffolded I seem to have a cleavage up to my chin , so all tops look low cut Confused (or they bunch up at my waistline).

Cheapthrills · 03/06/2016 21:36

I'm in the podgy knees and cankles brigade sadly so I have to be careful with dresses and skirts. I live in skinny jeans and biker jackets which I find really easy to wear. I avoid lace and frills and bows or anything too fussy but that's a matter of taste rather than to do with my age.

Floisme · 03/06/2016 21:58

My knees and thighs are shot but my lower legs and ankles are my best feature so I show them off as much as I can, while I still can. I'm cross with myself for hiding them away all those years when they were absolutely cracking.

I find I'm drawn nowadays to styles and fabrics that have a bit of structure. I look terrible in anything loose and floaty. But these are just my own 'rules' not something I'd recommend to everyone over 50.

TSSDNCOP · 03/06/2016 22:01

Crop tops
Pruna

Other than that whatever suits you. Why restrict yourself when there's so much lovely stuff to wear?

blueskyinmarch · 03/06/2016 22:14

I am 53 and my legs are fucking magnificent so I wear things above the knee. I do tend to hide my stomach area as that is not great but I wear sleeveless tops and skinny jeans. I refuse to wear what people think someone of my age should wear. I wear what I like and feel good in. As should everyone.

Notcontent · 03/06/2016 22:17

I am early 40s and skinny jeans are my uniform when I am not at work. I am quite petite so they suit me and I think I will be wearing them when I am 80. However, i improbably would not wear ones with rips in them (as is the current fashion) - but then that's just me and probably nothing to do with age. My 10 year old dd doesn't like rips either!!!

PUGaLUGS · 03/06/2016 22:20

I am 50 and wear all of the above!

specialsubject · 03/06/2016 23:16

No short skirts or skinny jeans but never have, wrong shape. I do wear sleeveless tops in public - not super toned but no one has run screaming yet, and the weather is good!

No dress code memo issued to my knowledge. ..

dailymaillazyjournos · 03/06/2016 23:27

55 and my rules are:
Nothing grungy (used to wear a lot of grungy stuff when I was younger but now just look like a total scruff instead of artfully dishevelled.

Nothing with slogans/pictures on.

No rips in jeans.

No low cut/off the shoulder numbers

No plaits/pigtails or pink/blue etc hair colours.

I live in skinny jeans, white shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters and long sleeved t shirts (have always had flabby upper arms so have never been comfy showing those. )

Nothing from Superdry, Hollister, Abercrombie or other brands popular with teens and young adults.

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/06/2016 04:57

My mother is 83 and lives in jeggings or skinny jeans. Unfortunately she pairs these with short, thick jumpers and tends to look like a Chupa Chups lolly as she has skinny legs and a large stomach. She looks much better when she pairs them with a tunic.

Kr1stina · 04/06/2016 07:20

I'm in my 50s and have lots of rules for myself . But they are all related to colours and styles that I know suit my personality, colouring and body shape .

They are not related to my age in any way . I think it's a very odd idea TBH.
