Can I wear this to a wedding?

Off to a close friend's wedding this summer. Christian ceremony, followed by afternoon and evening reception. I have been asked to do a reading.

Is it wedding-able? If so, what would you recommend to cover the shoulders for the churchy bit or if it's a bit cooler?

Have literally no sense of style, so any guidance taken on the nose!

I definitely wouldn't wear that to a wedding. It's an evening dress not a day dress and black is traditionally not considered suitable for wedding clothes. Sorry!

Sorry, I don't think you can either! I'm all for people wearing what they like but it's just too eveningish and full on burlesque to be appropriate.

Disagree about it being too black though, the colour balance in its self would have been fine with white / bright accessories.

If you cut off the ruff at the bottom, ditched the bow and got a more summery demure jacket that you kept on and done up until after dinner you could get away with it.
Otherwise agree with earlier posts- is a bit too burlesque for a summer wedding, esp if doing a reading

Well, I think it could be ok if you took the sash off and put a belt instead plus wore it with shoes but nothing red. Maybe nude.

Any suggestions of not-hideously-expensive things that have caught your eye this season?

I'm 5'3", big of boob (breastfeeding currently) and used to be small waisted but two c-sections have meant I no longer have that hourglass figure!

One other thing - foot problems mean high stiletto heels are out, so need to find something that can go with a sandal or wedge heel...

IME, as a fellow dodgy footed soul it could actually be sensible to start with shoes first. I often need to anyway.

I'm a size 10... If left to my own devices, I tend to gravitate towards the conservative (Coast, Phase 8). But the few times I've seen a personal shopper, I've loved more unusual things they've chosen for me.

On maternity leave at the moment so £50ish would be my max budget.

Agree re: choosing shoes first! But I just hate anything other than Crocs so can't see myself making a sensible outfit decision based on that!

Sadly, being on the shorter side, maxi dresses tend to trail sadly in the mud and make me look like a hobbit.

Yes, but if you hate shoes and loads of them are uncomfortable then the field is significantly narrowed and you almost have to choose them first. If you had a pair you could tolerate and weren't to uncomfortable you could find dresses to go with them from now to evermore

There are petite maxi dresses about with no trailing in mud required.

I wore nude low kitten heels with the other dress but it was just a couple of hours - any longer and I would have needed something with open toes (Morton's neuroma if you're interested, which literally no-one is).

The coral dress is exactly the sort of thing I'd have gone for pre-kids, when I used to emphasise my waist. This is no longer a strong point! Do you think it'll still suit a less-than-firm tummy?

Oops - forgot to say, I like the Schuh (my nude heels are from there) but would need some sort of ankle or cross-foot strap as backless sandals have never stayed on my feet. Don't ask me why.

Also, as I like the style, do you think they're summery enough for that sort of dress?

The coral dress should be fine on less-than-firm tummy, yes. Ideal even.

The foot thing sounds dreadful. Safe to assume you;re not getting all the fancy-schmancy tratments wikipedia goes on about, I suppose. The black mules obviously wouldn't work with the coral dress but I think something that would should be findable. Will av a look.

That would work with your nude heels and is a lovely summer colour I think with a forgiving cut!
