Like Converse but comfortable and for normal width feet?

I find Converse incredibly narrow but I like the look, plus anything of that sort (very very flat) is really uncomfortable to walk in pavements on.

Any ideas for an alternative? I had some Johnnie B floral lace ups last summer and while they were really lovely to look at and didn't rub/right width, the soles were paper thin (and they gave up after 1 summer).

Sketchers are wide, many different styles

drspouse · 12/05/2016 16:31

I've just had a look at those and they look a bit too much like trainers. I think it's the sole? Or maybe the slightly nylony look (hmm would I like them if they were cotton like Converse?)? Or maybe it's the fluorescent colours? Not really sure!

sports direct sell Dunlop that look exactly like converse, variety of colours and much cheaper. I've never had a problem wearing even without sock liners. If you have smallish feet you can buy the junior ones

RayofFuckingSunshine · 12/05/2016 16:34

Mustang trainers

drspouse · 12/05/2016 16:38

My goodness those Dunlop are cheap as chips!
I would be happy to try a pair just to see if they were OK (I have thrown away so many shoes after about 3 wears Angry. Are they at least a little supportive?

Mustang also have that look I would like!

Ages ago I had a lovely pair of Think! leather shoes that looked like Converse (but were leather) and I wore them to death. The next pair I got dug into my heels (I did try them on in a shop but it's hard to tell, and they are pricey). So I'm v wary of buying something expensive that will just get thrown out.

Sketchers are a bit heavy on sole, but can't get much to fit my hobbit feet. I might check out mustang, anyone know where they are stocked on high street?

OnTique · 12/05/2016 16:39

Regarding being too flat and uncomfortable, a decent insert might help.

drspouse · 12/05/2016 16:41

I have tried padded insoles but once they get past a certain size the shoe is then too tight.

I find Vans to be much more comfy than Converse for my wide feet, they do hi top styles too in fabric and leather / suede.

maitaimojito · 12/05/2016 16:44

I find the leather converse much more comfortable - have you tried those?

drspouse · 12/05/2016 16:44

Are they not cut to the same width as the fabric converse?

maitaimojito · 12/05/2016 16:49

My leather pair feels way looser. I have the fabric ones which rub my little toes if I wear them for more than a couple of hours. I wore the leather ones on a city break all weekend a few weeks ago with no issues at all. I guess leather is a bit more forgiving and can mould to your foot a bit better?

drspouse · 12/05/2016 16:55

Mmm maybe... but I never got as far as rubbing my toes, the canvas ones squeezed the broad bit of my foot the first time I put them on.

Superga?

I've just bought a pair off eBay after a recommendation on here and they are sooooo much more comfortable than converse which feel like they're made out of cardboard

Hopelass · 12/05/2016 17:06

There is a slim sole versions.

drspouse · 12/05/2016 17:15

Are they also quite wide fitting Hopelass?

(I live in a shoe shop desert so apart from Office half an hour away I can't really try much on)

I live in the Dunlop ones. I have four pairs from the last couple of years in various colours for summer. They're amazing, and I have wide feet that need a lot of support (usually wear wide fit clarks brogues for work!)

drspouse · 12/05/2016 17:23

And I actually have a Sports Direct nearby, astonishingly, I just noticed.

Right, I know what I'm doing on Saturday.

I have very floppy feet, and they fit well in leather Converse - they look a lot wider than the fabric ones to me.

I still don't like them much though as they are so flat! I have a pair of canvas lace-ups from Gap years ago that have a little heel and they are so much more comfortable. But not as cool.

Scotslasslivinginfrance · 12/05/2016 17:33

Love Superga and I can wear without socks they don't last forever however if you wear them loads. I also find the leather converse a better fit slightly wider and therefore more comfortable to wear after a short breaking in period.

I wear the dunlops to work everyday, I'm on my feet for six hours and they have been fantastic!

Hopelass · 12/05/2016 17:58

Yes Op I find the superga wider definitely.

thatorchidmoment · 12/05/2016 18:19

Another vote for superga shoes here. My feet spread after pregnancies and they are super comfy. I think the superga website has an outlet section as well.
