Which ring?

Just as the title says really - which of these two rings do you prefer?

Not actually getting engaged yet. I just can't decide between which style of ring I'd like when I do...

and where is a good place to get a ring? Guessing Ernest Jones isn't the best?

First one, I like the design around the band.

Second one, it's lovely, just shown my Husband but he hasn't taken the hint!

I'm not keen on either, myself. They're a bit too blingy. And, this may not matter to you, but with a total carat weight of around 1ct those tiny diamonds around the band and the main stone really will be tiny. You might find neither ring looks particularly good in the flesh, because those photos are so zoomed in.

Second one, it's beautiful, is similar to my own x

Here's a bit of advice - if you want either of those then make sure you hitch up with a rich man!

Not a fan of either. I didn't go for a solitaire but there is lots of middle ground.

I will say be aware that white gold will not stay looking bright and silvery for long. I wish I had known this before I got my engagement and wedding rings.

White gold IS gold, but has to be plated with rhodium (?) to give it that bright finish. Mine get cleaned and re-plated annually. After a few months I notice that they begin to 'yellow' My engagement ring more so than my wedding ring. I suspect that the wedding ring is better quality. That was purchased in an independent jewellers (which is where I take both rings for their clean and replate). The engagement ring was from either Goldsmiths or Ernest Jones - can't remember .

If I could choose again I would go for platinum rather than white gold.

When you do get engaged look at the website Fellowes auction house in Birmingham they auction every month and you can get some absolute bargains - those rings have a resale of maybe £250 if you're lucky much better to get something amazing for your £. I bought a George Jensen ring rrp £1500 for £500 at Christmas. Good luck !

The rings and jewellery are beautiful and also you know you're getting it at a great price as in less than resale on it - if you go make sure you take Id etc and you can look very well at every item. You don't have to go to the auction yourself you can bid on the phone with the auction assistants. Those rings you're looking at are not a good buy for value or long term investment.

White gold is made by mixing yellow gold with other white metals. The result is not all equal in terms of quality. It gets the bright white shine by being rhodium plated but once this wears off (and in a ring that can happrn quite quckly) the metal underneath can look anywhere between a dark silver to quite yellow. I have 2 whilte gold rings and the difference between them is startling - the better quality one doesn't need redipping at all and looks very similar to my platnum wedding ring. The other one is patchy and unwearable.

I think you would need yo see both of those rings in person to judge properly and you should look at the quality of the diamond, the cut etc is more important than the size and whether it sparkles outside of the jewellers lights.

On the face of it I like the first one best though.

Personally neither. I'd also imagine it'd be a pain in the arse if a diamond ever fell out
