What bag do you use for general use?

I don't really like handbags. I tend to wear casual stuff all the time, jeans, jeggings ..

I'd like a bag I can fling my purse, phone, tissues, keys in, but something casual, but not tacky. I'm in my fifties, but still young looking.

What do you all use?

I once saw a really nice leather bag, kind of like a rucksack, but small and more for wearing over one shoulder. Not sure how to explain. I can't find anything like it.

I don't want something big, just to hold the above mentioned stuff.

I have had a series of Cath kidston small shoulder bags. They last about 3 years. If that's not your taste tkmaxx sell some lovely osprey leather sort of dinky messenger bags in plain colours

FrogletinaBallerina · 11/04/2016 09:46

I use a dark brown Mulberry Anthony messenger bag.

Agree with Clara - Osprey have some lovely bags. Are you near a McArthur glen outlet place? The Osprey shops there usually have great deals.

Donge13 · 11/04/2016 09:46

A small osprey cross shoulder bag.
I hate carrying a bag.

Hatefeelingdown · 11/04/2016 09:47

I don't really like flowery or fussy things. Thanks for the tip about TK Maxx, I'll take a look.

Thanks. Can anyone link to the kind of osprey bag you mean?

A very old (20 odd year old) version of this

or this

neither cheap but the age tells a story.

I use a small crossbody Kipling bag for everyday use.
It's got 4 compartments and holds an awful lot of tat despite looking compact. It's like the Tardis.

MrsT2007 · 11/04/2016 11:59

MrsT2007 · 11/04/2016 11:59

This one It's great, can be used cross body which I like, lovely quality and you can fit much more in it than you'd think.

BikeRunSki · 11/04/2016 13:17

OP, I'm just like you, a bit younger maybe, and also looking fir this elusive bag!

I have an ancient "portrait" cross body satchel type bag from Gap that got second hand 10 years ago. It really needs replacing.

I do like the Mulberry Anthony, but I can't justify spending several £100 on a bag, particularly since my clothes are a lot more high street.

Hatefeelingdown · 11/04/2016 13:36

Thanks. The Gucci one is slightly out of my league Grin

polyhymnia · 11/04/2016 14:35

And I must say I wouldn't like that great big G on the Gucci one.. Not exactly low key ...

Thecatisatwat · 11/04/2016 14:58

Dh recently bought me this one as an anniversary present (couldn't justify spending it on myself - nearly fainted at the price of the Gucci one mentioned). I've got a brown one - it holds loads. Only problem is that at the moment it smells odd because of the dubbin on it but Dh says that will fade. It's the £55 oiled leather cross body one (Fat face doesn't seem to let me link to an individual bag).

Thecat that's a nice bag.

Don't like logos myself polyhymnia but I think it's fairly subtle as part of the leather and not big gold logo like some of the Gucci bags..

Same reason that when I bought my Saint Laurent bag I bought one with the Y logo which most folk won't recognise rather than the YSL logo which I find tacky and obvious...

To OP. Appreciate its pricy but there are lots of high-street knock offs of similar size and shape and it's surprisingly practical..

AmberNectarine · 14/04/2016 23:00

I am using this one the most at the moment.

ouryve · 14/04/2016 23:12

I have a plain black leather cross body bag with a couple of useful pockets - one a flap pocket at the front and the other a phone bocket, at the back (and another one hidden inside, which is great for more personal stuff). It's Radley, from the outlet store, but not obviously branded (and the doggy lives in the pocket and gets told to behave if he comes out.)

I don't like backpack style handbags. I carry a proper daysack if I'm out shopping, anyhow, but having my purse, phone etc dangling behind me feels both vulnerable and inconvenient, not to mention uncomfortable. I have a shorter handled bag, which I love the look of, but find it a pain to carry around.

Charlieandlola · 14/04/2016 23:15

Long champ Le pliage smallest bag and or backpack may fit the bill, or ine if their leather backpacks ?

specialsubject · 15/04/2016 14:02

small black backpack thing if I have to 'dress up' and don't have pockets. I hate clutter in hands. Otherwise I wear clothes with pockets which take phone, keys and wallet which is all I carry.

it's a small phone though, not a whizzy-brick.
