Is Pantene shampoo actually bad for your hair, if so why

Presumably she said that because she is selling something else.

Not sure but I bought the 2in1 the other day (lazy cow in the mornings) and it's rubbish. Much prefer my Aldi ones

When it first came out people said it coated your hair in something that was bad for it, can't remember the details though.

Pantene contains silicones which coat the hair shaft, making your hair look shiny. But after a few uses you can get too much of it building up which then makes your hair look lank and greasy. It's not damage as such and can be removed by shampooing and conditioning using a silicone free brand (sometimes called clarifying).

My friend, who used to be a hairdresser, told me never to use it - and last time I did, through necessity (husband had bought it when he couldn't find my usual Aussie stuff), I ended up with both greasy hair and dandruff the day afterwards. I don't usually have either!

It's good for your hair. There is plenty of data to support strengthening claims.

You can't get dandruff from shampoo.

My hairdresser friend told me not to use it years ago on the basis that it coats the hair in silicone(?) residue which although makes it feel nice, can react badly to hair dyes / bleach etc.

As a PP said it coats your hair in silicone, which looks awesome, but when that ciatingnstarts to build up your hair goes to shit.

You can't get dandruff from shampoo - well, I did! It wasn't just little light flakes, it was almost like scabs here and there on my scalp. All vanished as soon as I went back to my normal shampoo - maybe I have an allergy, I dunno, but it most definitely happened to me, and after only one use of the Pantene 2 in 1!

I've been using it for years and my hair is not greasy nor do I have dandruff. I found that tresemme made my hair greasy as did aussie. I guess it's like everything else different strokes for different folks.

Dimethicone is pretty inert. It doesn't react with hair dye.

Why take chemistry advice from a hairdresser?

I would never use it again, had an awful experience with it. I ended up with this really disgusting oily patch at my crown. Not just normal grease, it was really thick oil. No amount of washing would remove it. Hair seemed clean until I dried it and the oily patch became evident. It was awful. In the end I had to wash it with that medicated coal shampoo (can't remember the name) and rinse it with alcohol. Repeated this over a few days and it did eventually disappear.

Dandruff is caused by the micro-organism p. ovals. No way you could catch this from any shampoo, let alone to get clinical signs the next day.

I thought most high street shampoos contained silicones?

Pantene pro-v used to make my hair fall out so I've not used it for years now.

It contains that killer chemical, dihydrogen monoxide - 85% of it!

I had lots of hair loss while using Pantene. I also had given birth to five children.

If anything, Pantene is going to result in less hair loss than a non-dimethicone product, as you need smaller combing forces.

The cosmetics chemists who formulate hair products say Pantene is the industry standard. See this and this. Salon stuff is a source of income for your hairdresser but there is no guarantee that the products are better. The ones my hairdresser sells are just terrible for my fine hair - they make my hair lanky and dirty looking.

The not have been washed look is due to Pantene and lots of other shampoos actually being 2-in-1 shampoos (although they don't advertise this), often labeled conditioning or moisturizing shampoos. Try a clarifying/clarifying shampoo or a baby shampoo instead. I have very fine naturally blonde Scandi hair and plain supermarket shampoos work best for my hair type - Pantene is too rich for me as well.
