Or did it used to be bad for hair until they improved it ?

Hairdresser told me today never ever use Pantene

I love MN. Only on here do you get a scientific counter argument!

I avoid Pantene, but only because I think it's a bit cheap and nasty.

ihatethecold · 02/04/2016 14:29

I saw a clip on the internet of a woman with smoking hair whilst she was getting her hair dyed. Apparently the build up of chemicals from Pantene in her hair had reacted with the hair dye.

no idea if this was true or not but my hairdresser posted it on FB. she doesn't sell her own products so she had nothing to gain form posting it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 02/04/2016 14:31

I thought most high street shampoos contained silicones?

They do. I don't think Pantene is particularly worse than any other silicone containing shampoo - I avoid them all Grin

GinandJag · 02/04/2016 14:31

I'm pretty sure that was a hoax.

FrustratedFrugal · 02/04/2016 14:54

Pantene Pro V:

Both contain silicones Wink

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2016 14:59

Why is water called aqua in these lists?

GinandJag · 02/04/2016 15:01

Is that the EU/UK formula for Pantene?

GinandJag · 02/04/2016 15:02

It's the CTFA name, FM - an international standard.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2016 15:03
Smile
Candycoco · 02/04/2016 15:09

Which is the ingredient which is silicone? I never know what I am looking for!

GinandJag · 02/04/2016 15:10

Dimethicone in those lists.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2016 15:11

Dimethicone

Is that the same as in the headline lotions?

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2016 15:14

I have googled and it is...

TheFallenMadonna · 02/04/2016 15:14

Lice not line.

Candycoco · 02/04/2016 15:14

Thank you. I ordered my dd some silicone and paraben (?) free shampoo and condition from Amazon from her curly hair.
I just use tresemme on my own hair but it's very fine and greasy after one day, I wonder if I should switch to something similar for myself

FurryDogMother · 02/04/2016 15:35

Dandruff is caused by the micro-organism p. ovals. No way you could catch this from any shampoo, let alone to get clinical signs the next day. Well, whatever it was, it looked like dandruff, it turned up the day after using Pantene, and it went as soon as I re-washed using my usual Aussie. I must be a walking scientific marvel :)

notagiraffe · 02/04/2016 15:41

I hated Pantene Pro V. Made my hair completely lank and greasy, even though I have dry hair. Useless stuff. I love Tresemme. It works for DC as well as me, makes your hair incredibly soft but not lifeless and people keep saying how nice it smells.

StiickEmUp · 02/04/2016 15:45

YY to silicone

We had a client once whose hair started smoking as it was being coloured. The thick silicone coating was burning Shock

FrustratedFrugal · 02/04/2016 16:31

Tresemme Keratin shampoo from Tesco - pretty similar formula but no dimethicone:

Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Polyquaternium-10, Parfum, PPG-12, Sodium Acetate, Isopropyl Alcohol, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Sodium Benzoate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Geraniol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool

The Beauty Brains guys (cosmetic chemits) have written lots of books on cosmetics, I read one of them and learned a lot, and their website is full of info. The quaternium ingredients are common conditioning ingredients in hair products. Silicones are optional and work really well for some and less well for others.

FrustratedFrugal · 02/04/2016 16:39

Here's more info on dandruff. Maybe the shampoo made your scalp oilier - it makes my hair limp and lanky and unclean -and that's why you got dandruff. In theory, the heavy-duty surfactants could dry out your scalp but most formulas contain SLS so I don't think that's the cause. I experimented with SLS free shampoos in the past and they also tended to make my hair greasy.

Thisismyalias · 02/04/2016 16:47

I got my hair cut once, and the hairdresser asked what shampoo I used, it was pantene.

She said how the straightness and comb was catching on my hair, it's because the shampoo leaves a coating on your hair. She said to switch to any shampoo but stop using pantene.

I picked up some Albert balsam, and I've not looked back.

kelper · 02/04/2016 16:56

I love the smell of Pantene, but after a couple of uses it makes my hair really greasy at the front.
I bought some solid shampoo from Lush the other day, and thats made it really wavy, i guess its washed the silicone out!

SuperFlyHigh · 02/04/2016 17:25

Can I just check? I use TIGI shampoos (Colour goddess) as never got on with silicone free, I see it contains SLS, are they bad?

BuggersMuddle · 02/04/2016 22:30

I have fine hair and find it leaves it lank with ongoing use (great after first use, obvs). I gather this is due to coating the hair. I like Tresemme and alternate with Aussie as I was led to believe changing brands was a good thing.
