Kind of a TAAT, so forgive me.

I've just read a thread on which Clark's Hamble Oaks were roundly recommended. I had a look at the website and really like them.

However, I have tried wearing brogues before and I just can't seem to get it right.

To my mind, they only look any good without socks, but surely this would cause smelly feet and blisters?

Do people usually wear socks with them, or pop socks?

I can imagine socks looking ok if you have lovely slim brown legs that aren't pasty and covered in age spots, but that ain't me, babe.

What do people do?

TIA

With tights? I wear mine with tights. With socks only with trousers.

HazelMcWitch · 28/03/2016 17:14

So, what clothes do they go with?

Other than trousers?

I can't imagine they would look very nice with jeans. I'd end up looking like a male geography teacher on Mufti day (short hair, not thin).

I wear them with dresses and skirts. They actually look fine. I usually wear my brogues with black tights and my skirts are usually about knee length or just above. I think maybe it depends largely on the length of your skirt. Probably a bit frumpy on with a calf length skirt but with skirts knee length and above, they are totally fine. The same for dresses.

Greengardenpixie · 28/03/2016 17:28

I wouldn't wear mine with jeans. I tend to keep them largely for dresses. I have a few wide leg trousers that I wear to work. Would wear brogues with them. I would stick to the dark brogues personally. Would struggle to put tights on with any of the light colours. Would have to go bare legged!!! You could wear pop socks under trousers.

So, I've missed the brogue boat now, then. Best to wait for autumn?

Well I was going to wear mine tomorrow. They are fine for Spring. In fact ideal really. It can be very wet where I live :(

nickEcave · 28/03/2016 18:04

PErfect for spring, I particularly like tan brogues with grey semi opaque rights and a dress that stops just above the knee. I pretty much live in this kind of outfit from March until weather gets properly hot

HazelMcWitch · 28/03/2016 18:10

Ooh, I like the idea of tan and grey...I suppose tan might work with navy tights too?

Right, tan Hamble Oaks ordered from Clarks.

Thanks all!

Would somebody mind linking tan brogues please.

I tried on some in Dune today, they had a white cleated sole. I liked them for casual practicality but would only wear with trousers.

Judydreamsofhorses · 28/03/2016 18:34

As well as with skirts/dresses, I wear mine with jeans and cigarette pants, also dungarees. (Jeans skinny or peg-leg.) I either wear fishnet ankle-highs if it's cold, or those footlet things with bare ankles if it's warmer.

Thanks Hazel. The Hambles are too masculine for me. My sister has them in navy patent and while I like them, I feel they look a little clumpy on my thick legs :(

Any opinions on these?

www.dunelondon.com/ladies-brogues-dept3109 - these are the ones I saw today. Too trainerish?

www.dunelondon.com/finchly-weave-embossed-leather-lace-up-shoe-0077505060001511 - I like these ones but the heel is slightly higher than it looks but they are nicer looking.

I'm torn because the second are a 'better buy' but the first are practical for my lifestyle (toddlers).

ChippyMinton · 29/03/2016 07:51

I love the suede ones with white sole. Not for work but for casual.

I wear my oxblood Hamble Oaks with knee length skirts + opaques, or wide leg wool trousers for work. I call it my Miss Marple look Hmm

absolutelynotfabulous · 29/03/2016 10:22

I'm so glad there's a brogue thread!

I love all those Dunes.

Much as I'd love a pair of flat ones, I think I'm too fat and dumpy short at size 12 and 5'31/2 for them.

Are heeled brogues ok, o wise and stylish ones?

fluffywol · 01/04/2016 12:32

I've wanted brogues for a while and now, on the back of this thread Grin

fluffywol · 01/04/2016 12:39

Arses, pressed the wrong button Blush Start again. On the back of this thread I've treated myself to some Hamble Oaks. Got tan E fit from Ambrose Wilson, who do shit clothes (all their trousers and jeans have elasticated back waists 'for comfort' Hmm) but got 10% off plus free delivery so ended up costing £56. Just worn them for an hour or so while mooching in the shops and they're fab and really comfortable. I'm wearing them with socks and straight-leg jeans with a turn up and think they look bloody good Grin

GinIsIn · 01/04/2016 12:47

Brogues look great with skinny, ankle grazer jeans with a turn up. I love mine with a passion but they are sadly about to die a death, I feel.

JaneJeffer · 01/04/2016 13:36

Have you tried wearing shoe liners?

looki · 01/04/2016 14:09

Just spotted that www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Dune+Finchly+weave+embossed+lace+up+shoes/232987036,default,pd.html?cm_mmc=Criteo--Shoes+%26+Boots--Shoes--Finchly+weave+embossed+lace+up+shoes&$ja=tsid%3a45091%7ccid%3a1279708%7ccgid%3a1279708834423%7ccrid%3a707312275 aren't classified as brogues on the Dune website. They fall under 'flat shoes'. Am I being really dumb, what is the difference?

HazelMcWitch · 01/04/2016 18:47

Hamble Oaks are the comfiest shoes I've ever worn - on the first wear, I wore them all day for shopping and dinner out.

Love them. Want them in pewter now!

Oh I got the pewter winter gone and I love them, I also have the lemon from last summer. I have went for the off white 'taylor palm' this spring again another great buy. I tend to wear them with skinny jeans slightly rolled up, cigarette pants or even leggings over swing dresses and pinafores....enjoy them I bet they won't be your last pair.

tellmeofthetime · 01/04/2016 23:21

Can I jump on here ? I was going to post asking about brogues when I spotted this thread.
I normally wear dresses and knee high boots in winter, and have ventured into coloured tights, as in brown woolly ones and purple opaques (adventurous for me)
I've just bought some wine brogues to be even braver. What colour tights ? And what denier for (cold North) Spring ?

looki · 01/04/2016 23:58

I think navy and wine look great together.
