I'm forty one but only for a few more weeks.

I have very thick hair that used to be red, but now has faded to a, well, mousy greeny browny shitty faded colour. So I dye it with blonde highlights.

For years I had a dyed red short bob, but I got bored of it because I had to go to the salon more or less once every three weeks to keep it sharp and sort my roots out.

So I had all the red stripped out, grew it into a long bob, and hated it. The bleach killed the condition, it required endless washing and straightening to keep it tidy, and as it's thick and unruly, the minute I stepped out of the door it did its own thing anyway. It took ages to sort out in the mornings and it was all for nought because it always looked shit by 11 am.

So. I had it cut short. First not too short, then a radical undercut pixie thing. I liked it, but my teenagers told me I had 'speak to the manager' hair, which I took to mean no-nonsense middle-aged efficient, sexless hair.

So I tried growing it a bit on top, to make me more feminine.

Well, now I look like Claire Balding. Lovely woman, Claire, but my style icon she ain't. I saw a photograph of myself at a wedding that bore no relation to the woman I feel like inside.

Now I'm at an absolute loss. How does a woman in her forties get decent hair that doesn't scream Denise Welch/Claire Balding?

What the hell do I do? Help, mavens. I need you.

I did wonder about that - but because my hair is so thick, every time I try that pushed-across fringe style, it just ends up getting in my eyes and being a pain in the arse.

I just don't have the patience to keep shoving it out of the way.

I think I'm going for the full Jean Seberg.

I'm not sure about the colour. I'll post a pic of my natural colour (before highlights) - it's quite dark.

The style and colour in that picture are lovely.
You just need to use some wax to define it a bit more and to help push the fringe to the side.

HeyNonnyMaybe · 29/03/2016 07:28

Ooh! That colour is lovely, and so is the length. I rather like the shape too, it's much more stylish than the other pic looks, now we can see the side.

Yes yes yes to Jean Seberg, that will still have softness but will be out of your face. I'd definitely go for your natural colour rather than a darker brunette.

From the little we can see of your clothing in this pic, you look rather stylish, Hazel, don't feel so down about yourself!

HazelMcWitch · 29/03/2016 07:34

Thank you. I think I made a big mistake going blonde. I did it to cover the grey streak at the front.

They'll be able to colour over highlights, won't they?

Yes lovely hair in the last pic.

HeyNonnyMaybe · 29/03/2016 09:56

Yes, they can cover over highlights, but they're likely to need to do a warmer colour than your own cool toned brown, otherwise the highlights can go khaki.

I've got highlights too, same thing as you, to cover white at the front. I like it, but I'm getting bored with them, and am thinking about returning to my natural colour for a bit too, which is very similar to yours. Bracing myself for endless dyeing though.

I know it's a terribly uncool thing to do when we're all supposed to be effortlessly fabulous, but if you're in a style rut have you ever thought about getting your colours done? I did (just ignore all the bizarre suggestions for cerise lips and purple eyelashes), and it's been a bit of a revelation. I now look much healthier and less tired. I also felt like I taking charge and rejuvenating my wardrobe and style a bit.

I'm mid 40s, and lucky to be very happy with where my life is, so I'm happy in my age. The way I look at it is that I'm not trying to look younger, I just want to be a stylish mid 40s woman. I had a thread going in S&B a few weeks ago about how tricky it is to style yourself in your 40s, have a read of a it, a lot of very funny posts from women in a similar situation.

HeyNonnyMaybe · 07/04/2016 19:40

What happened to the hair, OP? Smile

YvaineStormhold · 07/04/2016 19:42

Hello!

Name change but it's me.

A pixie cut. Very very short.

The jury's out...no colour change yet.

I don't love it, to be honest Sad

HeyNonnyMaybe · 07/04/2016 19:45

Oh no!! Do you think that changing the colour will make you love it? Is it a good cut, do you think? Or hasn't it been done well?

YvaineStormhold · 07/04/2016 19:48

I can't decide.

It has a diagonal fringe. It's textured. It's very short at the back.

But in pics, it's a short back and sides. I don't feel very feminine.

This was straight from the salon.

Not sure I can do it justice myself.

Should I change the colour?

I have a colour appointment booked for a few weeks' time, but I'm not sure what to do.
