LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

All washed a dried now.

I really like the colour and it looks lovely and glossy but not unlike how my hair looks after a box dye. For me the proof will be in the next couple of weeks. Normally my hair fades to a horrible brassy orange colour even though I've dyed it brown. I'm hoping henna won't do that.

It's not really covered my greys at my roots, I found it difficult to really rub it in there. Next time I'm going to make it runnier and whisk for a lot longer to try and stop it being grainy.

How quickly before I can do it again to try and tackle the roots???

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 23/03/2016 08:09

Strawberry- sounds like you definitely need it runnier. You can tackle roots as soon as you like. Just mix one cube, to a smooth runny yogurt type consistency and do on your roots and greys only. It really won't hurt it doing it so soon after. Report back!

Oh and compared to box dyes I am finding henna colour improves over the weeks rather than fades to brassiness of box dyes. Mine was getting more orangey and drier as the months went on but henna seems to have fixed this.

Big thanks IDo for this thread. I wouldn't ever have considered henna before reading this, but I just finished my first attempt tonight and it's fab! I used 2 cubes of caca noir and one of brun. I chopped rather than grated and it melted fine. I also used the electric mixer (great tip) and got it to Greek yoghurt consistency. I found it pretty easy to apply using a hair dye brush and then my hands, but I've only got chin length hair. I left it on for 2.5 hours and used conditioner to wash it out. It's gone a fantastic colour - pretty much my natural colour. I didn't want any red in it. And it's super shiny. Anyway, here's a picture. I'm so pleased I'm such a MN sheep. Baaaaaa.

No worries Queenof!! just wanted to share the love 😍 So glad it's inspiring others and folks are brave enough to try it. Your hair looks beautiful, that shine will last too. Get ready for "ooh isn't your hair shiny" compliments 😀 Honestly!

Good idea to mix BRUN and NOIR, go us freestylers!

My hair is naturally quite dark brown with lots of grey and a few highlights. I used caca brun a week ago and am really happy with the results, especially over the grey and the highlights. It is quite dark over my natural brown hair. Does anyone know if I reapply with caca brun whether it will go darker brown? I want to carry on using henna but don't want to go any darker brown. I think I would look a bit wiggy.

I was considering doing half and half brun and marron - does anyone know what colour you get from this?

sergeantmajor · 24/03/2016 14:37

QueenOfTheHighCs - love the pic! That is just the colour and shine that I want to achieve.

I use box dyes to dye my half-white hair to its original dark brown. On the instructions for the box dye it says don't use on previously-henna-ed hair. I have heard dire warnings that henna + box dye = green hair?! (even if many months between the henna and the box dye).

Or is it the indigo in the mix that's the problem? Confused

I would love to find an alternative to the box dyes, but if henna doesn't sufficiently colour the white, then I would be stuck and unable to return to the box dye (which does cover the white, at the same time as wrecking my hair).

Dilemma! Do I risk it?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 24/03/2016 14:58

KATIE- this is BRUN and MARRON mixed together (2 cubes of each) on my donkey brown and grey hair. I really like this mix. I will see if I can find a pic of just MARRON as you will see it's a bit redder than the mix.

thank you IDO. I think I will try that next time.

ididntsignupforthis1 · 25/03/2016 18:15

So I just dyed my hair badly with a box dye.
Can I use henna on top.?

ScarletForYa · 25/03/2016 19:21

Use colour b4 ididntsignupforthis1

You can get it in boots, it will reverse the box colour.

ItsAllGoodMan · 25/03/2016 19:59

Sorry took ages to post this It was quite dark when first dyed on Tuesday but has faded to this. This is two caca noir to one caca marron. Sorry I seem to have a fleck of something in my hair!

PacificDogwod · 25/03/2016 21:08

I don't think that you have to get rid of box colour first, henna just goes on top.
The other way around is more problematic and bleaching hennaed hair is a big no-no afaik.

Gorgeous colour - and curls, ItsAllGoodMan Envy

wickedfairy · 26/03/2016 09:08

I would love to try. I have some white hair that is dyed brown - if the henna didn't cover those, how would I be able to have the roots dyed at the hairdresser again?

If it's not possible, am but sure I could take the risk.... Anyone had this issue?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/03/2016 09:39

I stumbled on this thread by accident, but I'm inspired now Grin

My hair is short (usually cropped but at the moment 2" on top, 1" at the back)
I'm a brunette (with grey) IRL, but I've been using box due (usually a 10.00 ish) every 3 weeks and highlights every 3 months or so , hair is cut every 5-6 weeks.
I was thinking about going back to brunette and growing my hair a bit longer, which I can't do as it is now.

But it is SO coarse and wavy, I'm going to have it cropped next week and use henna I reckon.

I used to use BodyShop when I had waist length hair (in my 20s) so I remember the fag ash/cow pat aroma.

This sounds more do-able (with DDs help) because I don't have much to dye.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/03/2016 22:04

I am scalped.
I have Lush Henna (Brune)

Tomorrow, I do battle.

If I'm not transformed into a glossy barnetted brunette, I will cry, run away from home and visit every one of you to put a bat up yoiur nightdresses..................... Wink

PacificDogwod · 26/03/2016 22:13

Oooh, 70, I am excited for you - you'll love it!

I've been doing my hair with LUSH henna for a couple of years now, but it is such a faff with long hair (although I have never tried the electric whisk). I am at the brink of a pixie cut Grin

Good luck tomorrow! Just bung it on, really no need to be too scientific about it. Cling film, towel - shiny brunette you shall be

ditavonteesed · 27/03/2016 10:14

just remembered that I had 2 cubes of red in my top drawer, recently got a pixie cut, so sat here wrapped in cling film and dd's hair turban. I love Lush henna, I even love the smell. I am a natural red head and it goes such a lovely colour on me,, takes my colour back to what it was when I was a child.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 27/03/2016 17:47

70isalimit- make sure you make it quite wet, and whisk with an elec whisk if you have one, like ski yogurt consistency. Slop it on, mush it in, wrap it up and hey presto be prepared for compliments galore, good luck!

Okay....
last night, I cut a small section (my hair was dyed and highlighted, I had it cropped right back yesterday, one of those Spur of the Moment 'Right Let's Do It' things)

The top is maybe 1" long. sides and back cut in.
My strand test did nought after 2 hours, I thought 'ok doesn't do well with dyed hair' and left it overnight. This morning, it was coppery blonde.

So, did the cutting, melting, mixing, applying. Clingfilm, towel wrapped.
Left it 4 hours and........I have dark coppery brown Grin

Really pleased. (I might post a photo of my barnet). I know it might darken a bit.
This was Brune, I used 2 squares. Might get the Marron and mix them for next time.
I plan to have one more crop in a month or so to get my hair back to non dye (box dye) then use henna while it grows a bit. (Collar length)

Grin Need to remember to paint my eyebrows on every day.
IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 27/03/2016 18:42

70isalimit-sounds grand! Let's see a photo then Grin

I mixed BRUN and MARRON last time and got a lovely shade

Would love to use henna and get great results but I have quite a bit of grey hair. Would it work? Bit worried that you do it and the grey at the roots turn orange yikes!!!!!!
Do people who dye it with henna not have much grey then? What do you do?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/03/2016 15:13

Before - bit wild, needed way too much conditioning to keep it semi presentable and 3 weekly dyes. Nice enough when it was just washed but in the morning before my shower it looked a bit cotton woolley.
Got a bit meh bored.

After- cropped, henna-ed , bit wild and lairy still Grin but the colour IRL is more coppery.
I can now hopefully get it better conditioned and better behaved and grow it a bit .

Right, tomorrow is the day!

I am a Lush henna virgin, I have got Caca Marron, rubber gloves, cling film, disposable hairnets and old towels.

It won't come out too red will it?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/03/2016 09:02

Good Luck Dancer Grin

What's your starting colour?
Marron is more conker-ey from the description (I used brun which has given me more copper brown than red).

Get everything ready in advance (I cut sheets of clingfilm ready to wrap my head and an old turbanwrap) . I did read that warmth for red tones, leave your head unwrapped for brown but imagine the mess Shock
