LUSH henna - why has it took me so long to find this fabulous stuff?

God it's amazing. Been using box dyes for ages to cover the greys in my brown hair. My hair was in terrible condition, dry, thinning, breaking off etc.
Tried the reddy brown Lush henna, it's a gorgeous colour, plus has left it really glossy, hasn't been this shiny all over since I was in my 20s.
Did it about 4 weeks ago and the colour and shine is still as good as when I first did it. Will never use a box dye again.
Promise I don't work for them, just needed to share the love!

Ha! Me too!

GeorgeTheThird · 19/03/2016 18:41

I think mine was too thin in consistency but I have dark brown hair (with a very few greys) and used brun so I'm hoping for the best.

GeorgeTheThird · 19/03/2016 18:41

No no, not thin, thick. Too thick in consistency.

yazzy85 · 19/03/2016 21:58

I have very dark hair and used marron a couple of months ago, it didn't change my colour so much but gave great shine. I just used rouge after reading this thread and its a great result on my hair. Look forward to trying the other henna recommendations, even though I love Lush I hate chopping it all up!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 20/03/2016 06:29

What sort of red has rouge come out on your hair yazzy? I've been using MARRON and BRUN on my dark brown hair and am getting braver so keep eyeing up the rouge shade, but don't want to end up pillar box red Shock

Apart from the greys being gone, I'm not sure how much difference it has made to mine, tbh. It was pretty shiny anyway.

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 20/03/2016 13:00

I use henna rouge and I just use one block per time on my roots. The great thing about henna is that is doesn't really fade. It gets my grey hairs better than box dyes but it's still not 100%. Would mixing it with coffee make it redder?

ZaraW · 20/03/2016 13:30

Mixing with amla powder makes hair browner as it tones down the red.

LovelyFriend · 20/03/2016 22:48

Yazzy how are you cutting it?
I find using my big sharp knife and cutting it as if I was slicing cheese off the end of a block, is really quick and easy and it all just goes to crumble.

yazzy85 · 20/03/2016 23:23

IDoAllMyOwnStunts It's a lovely deep red as my hair was dark brown underneath it couldn't possibly go pillar box red as henna doesn't lighten your hair as far as I am aware. I've tried to add a picture of the colour it is now, freshly done the rouge over night.

LovelyFriend I tried chopping it up as well but the bigger chunks took a lot lonher to mix/dissolve and I had hard bits when putting the mixture on my head. Before that I tried the cheese grate with caca brun and it took forever but was smooth when mixed up.

Lovely. Like a conker.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 21/03/2016 16:00

That's lovely yazzy, the shine is amazing!

Thanks! Yes the benefit of Lush's henna is that it leaves your hair in amazing condition with all the lovely the cocoa butter in it Smile

How many washes until I can use white towels to dry my hair again Confused ?

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 22/03/2016 08:08

I don't find henna comes off my hair after I've washed it

GeorgeTheThird · 22/03/2016 11:50

Thanks. It did the first time, I have switched towel colour now! I'll go back to the white one then in a couple more days, no point making extra washing.

ItsAllGoodMan · 22/03/2016 19:39

Inspired by this thread I'm sitting with lush henna on my head right now. Getting really bored and uncomfortable and can't wait to wash it out. I used one block marron and two brun so am interested to see what colour I end up with! Oh btw I chopped rather than grated and that worked fine. Started off trying to grate it and it took ages so gave up. Will post back later with results

EmmanuelleMumsnet · 22/03/2016 19:51

So, I was inspired by this thread too and bought the Caca Rouge but now I'm not sure I can face the mess and hassle…and the smell (even though it's a nice one) already seems to have permeated the whole flat, with it just sitting in a drawer - argh!

jellybeans · 22/03/2016 20:08

I have used it for years now. Mostly to cover a few greys. But also as it makes hair shiney.

Using the brun one over and over can make hair black. You also have to watch for two tone hair if just doing roots. Happened to me once. I got round this problem by mostly doing roots when touching up but making sure I also did some of the length.

It does cover grey but if you have lots can need doing quite often. I don't find it fiddly now am used to it. I grate and mix in a paste and use wooden utensils to apply!

I leave it for 3 hours. It is messy but doesn't stain. I alternate between caca brun and marrow and sometimes mix both. I find brun gives more shine.

StrawberryLeaf · 22/03/2016 20:52

Another one sitting with a head full of henna tonight Grin

I didn't get it on till after 8pm cause the baby wouldn't sleep so it's going to be a late night! I'm really hoping I've got my hair covered well.

I've got shoulder length hair and used half a block of the brun, I grated and still have a sore hand! Wasn't too messy to apply, I sat in the bath and then just rinsed the bath out with the shower head.

I have been using box dyes for a while so I'm hoping this doesn't mess with how the colour comes out!

Will update on my results Grin

So I used the brun for the first time on Saturday. Cow pat is a great descripton, I struggled a bit with the way it went slightly crumbly (maybe I hadn't put enough water in?). I have a few greys on my parting and they didn't quite take to the henna and I did leave it in for three hours. Maybe I didn't cover them enough? However the shine and colour are gorgeous. It's a lovely conker brown and is actually shiny! My hair finally looks healthy after about two years of looking like a fuzzy nightmare. I won't say it's swishy but this is really amazing considering how crap my hair was pre henna. I'm going to try to sort out the grey situation. Any tips?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 22/03/2016 21:26

Partyinthekitchen- excellent news on getting henna-ing! I made it too dry the first time I used it and it too went a bit crumbly and didn't quite get all my greys so maybe needs to be wetter.

Next time I did it I made it quite wet (think Heinz tomato soup consistency). I cut each cube into 4 pieces, put in glass bowl and covered in quite a bit of boiling water. Then whisked with hand electric mixer to get a real creamy mix. So it was quite wet when I put it on but the crumbliness had completely gone, it was so much easier to slop onto my head and rub into my hair when wetter consistency. Plus it has completely, I mean not a single, grey showing. I used 3 cubes and have shoulder length hair. Much better result for me like this.

I also found it was crumbly and got very thick.

The lady in the shop said it needed to be the texture of yoghurt, I think next time I'll try to make it runnier. Will be interesting to see if it covers my greys.

PartyintheKitchen · 22/03/2016 22:08

Great tips, thanks Stunts and Strawberry. Mine definitely wasn't that runny, more like thick Greek yogurt than normal yogurt. Also I really struggled to get rid of the lumps so the electric mixer is definitely something I'll try. Nice. Excited to get rid of greys and have lovely shiny conker brown hair, it's like a dream! (I'm not joking, fuzz head is no fun).

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 22/03/2016 22:15

Yes normal ski type yogurt consistency a good way to describe it (not petit filou!). The electric hand mixer worked like a dream, no lumps at all. As I say I have no hints of any grey at all now.

Isn't it amazing to have fuzz free hair? I was getting so fed up of mine. It really has given me a boost to have nice condition hair again, it was just looking bloody awful before, the condition of it more than anything. I know it's a bold statement but I Can't see myself going back to box dyes.
