Well, I've grabbed the bull by the horns & am leaping into the new thread........

Felt very sad no one else had started one whilst I scoffed dined.

If no one like the title I am more than happy to have it deleted & go with anything else.

DH has taken over the catering for the month of February......... the food is good but the angst is another matter Grin

Glorious day here, too, BTM - I have washing on the line (and one of DS's son's cats on my lap). DH is out in the garage trying to see if he can rearrange things so we can put "stuff" in there. Tbh, a lot of the things in my utility room are needed: two cat baskets, dirt tray as we obviously can't let the cats out yet, or if ever), bags with groceries in which will be used, etc.. Everywhere is beginning to look better.

Rose, we have a list of boring jobs for this afternoon - you know you have to do them, but really can't be bothered.

Herbs, well done with the work.

motherinferior · 24/02/2016 12:32

BTM, it's the angle of the light that gives it the strength for our skins to make vit D IIRC (which I probably do). Certainly it's only really from March onwards. The thing is, our bodies do store vit D (unlike eg vit C - take too much of that and you just pee it out) so the amount our skins make during the brighter months does accumulate. Otherwise it's food or supplements - but unless you're taking supplements most of what you get will be through the skin.

It's an interesting vitamin. Lots of work on its anti-inflammatory properties, and it may be implicated in inflammation-related conditions like age-related macular degeneration and Alzheimer's as well as MS.

herbaceous · 24/02/2016 16:10

I have done a lady splash! First pool I tried had a power cut, but undaunted I pressed on. The next one was having a session for over-50s. Oh dear, I thought, I can't go to that. Then remembered. I AM 50. So, a curate's egg.

However, I did 24 lengths, which I thought was pretty good. You swimmers out there - any tips to make front crawl less exhausting? I seem to run out of breath...

herbaceous · 24/02/2016 16:11

Oh and I was one of only four people in the pool. Though one of eight in the sauna. Cosy.

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2016 16:13

Ah, DM hates the sun and has always avoided it at all costs whereas I love it - maybe that'll help protect me from the dementia!

Off for my "implant consultation" later - fingers crossed. The consultation is ££, never mind whether they can do the actual procedureConfused

NUFC69 · 24/02/2016 16:39

Interesting about the cost of the consultation, BTM, my practice did it for nothing and then told me that I didn't have enough bone density. Good luck.

Herbs, I don't do front crawl, breast stroke all the way for me - well, apart from my legs which do strange things since I had my knee replaced. Perhaps MI can advise.

magimedi · 24/02/2016 16:41

Lurgy seems to have gone - hooray. Spent a lovely couple of hours out in the garden in the sunshine pruning roses & clematis. So early to be doing it, but they are all shooting already.

Hattie - those marble/button onions peel easily if you put them in a bowl with boiling water & leave them for 5/10 mins.

herbs - you probably need to swim a bit slower & concentrate on your breathing rhythm. I find it very easy to start my swim too fast & that leads to trouble!

This is an amazing clip of how do do front crawl with no effort!

If you follow on the links there is LOADS of stuff about swimming.

Also this website has some very helpful stuff about how to swim better.

NU, this is LondonSad! Sorry to hear you had poor bone density - no way of knowing that till they check. Will update later.

hattymattie · 24/02/2016 16:50

Thanks for the tip re button mushrooms Magi, will try that next time.

No sun here today, have given DS his vitamin supplement and am expecting him to sprout immediately. MI - now wondering about me and Vit D. I wonder if there is less alzheimers in sunny climes - has anybody studied that. I seem to remember that Canada had a very high rate of MS.

As it was a rainy holiday afternoon, DD2 proposed that we watched the Danish Girl. Have to say, it was a bit slow.

herbaceous · 24/02/2016 17:11

Thanks MM! That leisurely freestyle is amazing! Can't quite work it out, though... I think I do go off too fast, indeed, but manage to keep going OK doing breast-stroke or back stroke. I was quite pleased at the speed I got up to, in fact. Just wish swimming wasn't such a hassle, what with getting there, wetness and awkwardness with lockers, carrying clothing, etc. I dare say if I did it regularly I'd develop a streamlined system...

magimedi · 24/02/2016 17:38

Herbs - I swim 3 x a week & can get changed, swim, 40 lengths of 25M pool, shower, hairwash, moisturise (all over!) & dry hair (v quick as is short) in about 45 mins. Took me much longer when I first started but have everything to hand in swim bag & a routine for it all. And I try to wear easy clothes!

I love it - as well as the exercise I find it calms me as I just go up & down counting the numbers of lengths & don't really think of anything else. I've taken to wearing ear plugs (as had a couple of ear infections) & I've found that they really help me to concentrate & I can really hear my own breathing with them in a lot better.

Vit D is the only supplement that DH & I take - have read that it is much harder to process it when you get over 60. And there's beenno berluddy sun since Spetember, anyhow!

motherinferior · 24/02/2016 17:46

I must return to swimming now I have no recent piercings and before I get more done in my earlobes.*

I have inadvertently done some voluntary work this afternoon, having helped the press officer at one of the ovarian cancer charities revamp her press release. Feel pleased with self (I used to run press offices becoming a journalist) for skills contribution and possibly help get a bit of coverage for efforts to fight this bastard disease.

In other news my mum's GP texted me...to tell me she's friends with someone I've not seen since we left school*.Grin

*they are very small, rather pretty studs. Ask MrsS. I'm not exactly festooned with pins or anything.

Lalsy · 24/02/2016 18:41

Magi, you almost make me want to swim - I love sea swimming but don't bother much at home. I agree on routine for exercise tho - makes it all a lot faster when you have your ducks in a row.

motherinferior · 24/02/2016 18:47

Allegedly regular exercise reduces hot flushes

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2016 18:53

On the bus home from my consultation. It took quite a while with various x rays, photos and proddings. I need a very large amount of work done and it will likely cost eleventy million pounds and some, but it will be a week or so before I get the blow-by - blow bill. On the positive side, I could definitely find time in my schedule to go and see the implant specialist once a week for 9 monthsWinkSmile

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2016 18:54

MI, surely the flushes just happen during the exercise itself rather than at random times and during the night!

BeachysFlipFlops · 24/02/2016 19:01

Well I've had a super eventful day. Had an investigation of my innards under general and everything has apparently become connected inside. Bowel, bladder and womb meshed together with scar tissue from three C sections.....oh joy!

Still at least I know why I've been so uncomfortable and they can do something about it, albeit a bit drastic.

Sorry haven't been on much. Been a bit preoccupied with this and ds's anguish over exams.... Onwards and upwards now though.

Good luck for results, Mrs S.

Will be home for Bake off and Wine, I hope.

motherinferior · 24/02/2016 19:04

Oh Beachy.....!!!!!

BTM, I wish. Am particularly plagued by then ATM. Not impressed by allegations that spicy food makes them worse either.

CointreauVersial · 24/02/2016 19:27

Grin at BTM. Presume you are happy to revisit implant specialist because of his professional skills and witty repartee?? Wink

Blimey, Beachy, ouch! DSM has had terrible bother from adhesions following bowel cancer surgery - she now has some sort of keyhole nerve-zap procedure in her abdomen every year or so, which keeps the discomfort in check. What have they suggested for you?

Ooh, Bake Off! And 24 Hours in A&E, I think?

I have gone on record before about my loathing of the whole swimming procedure, unless sunbeds, tropical weather and cocktails are involved. I am Shock at the speed at which you are in and out, Magi. DH is actually at the pool at this very moment - we have a shiny new leisure centre just two miles away, but even that hasn't tempted me. Having said that, I really must get back into some form of exercise - I have done nothing since October; the longest break from ladyjogging in over five years. I just CBA at the moment.

Collymollypuff · 24/02/2016 19:39

Hugs, Beachy. At least they can get it sorted. Thanks And you, BTM. Grin

You are tempting me all with MN and FB stuff about shows. So I should take ds to Book of Mormon (he is over 21)? And The Magic Flute - get friends to come to that? What else is on that's outstanding?

bigTillyMint · 24/02/2016 19:50

CV, oh those as wellWink

Beachy, that sounds scary - you have obviously been being incredibly brave ChocolateWineFlowers

I used to do a lot of swimming (with my head held high out of the water!) as a teen, but then my hair got longer and I just CBA with the faff apart from when on holiday in a hot, hot place.

DS is out babysitting and DH is taking DD to the cinema9Shock) so I have the sofa to myselfGrin

Molly, we loved KinkyBoots at Christmas - pure entertainment!

Lalsy · 24/02/2016 20:02

Oooh blimey Beachy, your poor thing. And yes, brave thing. Hope they can get it sorted quickly now.

BTM, think I missed the memo. Where are the implants going?

I want the sofa and tv to myself in peace more. ds colonises living room till 9.30/10 (he has a tiny bedroom) then shuffles in and out 15 times packing his bag. His bedroom door shuts. I hop onto sofa and start locating remotes, knitting etc. dh arrives home. Shuffles in and out 15 times unpacking his bag and rearranging his bike. Bake Off you say?

BeachysFlipFlops · 24/02/2016 20:35

Thanks all.

Home now....bake off on, fire going, blanket on knees! Sorted.

motherinferior · 24/02/2016 20:46

I am going to watch One Child with a glass of red.
