jeans in your forties

Help! I have no idea what jeans are supposed to look like now. I want them to NOT be low waisted or skinny -what should I be looking for that is still somewhat current??!

WhataRacquet · 09/02/2016 17:51

I'm 47 too. Wear skinnies. I'm getting fed up of them now but the weather is too bad to wear anything else!

I don't like rips either. I think it's funny how our age group don't like rips. Been there done that in the 90's Smile.

I'm going to look for some straight cut jeans I think. Don't fancy boot cuts trailing on the ground.

Floisme · 09/02/2016 18:58

I'm 59 and have worn skinnies for the last few years but now back in some old straight legs which are pretty much the same as the so called girlfriend cut that's in the shops today. Not quite ready to go back to flares yet but thoroughly bored with skinnies.

I'm suprised jeans are still considered youthful - it's not as if it's the fifities still. Anyway denim suits my shape as it adds a bit of structure and counteracts the sagginess. It's floaty chiffony stuff that I look terrible in.

Hassled · 09/02/2016 19:02

I'm pushing 50 and still wearing skinny jeans. I don't care. I have good legs and suit skinnies - I'm hanging on to whatever I can vaguely get away with while I still can.

Savagebeauty · 09/02/2016 19:05

I'm 55 and live in skinny jeans. I have 34" inside leg, and love Banana Republic ones.
My favourite are Goldsign....at £280 not cheap but my 2 pairs ( one black, one blue) are on their 3rd winter and look brand new

Floisme · 09/02/2016 19:39

Manufactured rips just look stupid but I still have some Citizens of Humanity bootcuts that have genuinely gone at the knees with age. If I do go back to flares I'll definitely be wearing them again (as they give me the thighs of a supermodel).

RonaldMcDonald · 09/02/2016 19:53

I think how they look on the arse is the main thing
make sure that you look at them on the arse and side on
have a look at pocket positioning...size of pockets width apart and place on bum
this is vital to great jeans

have a look at some more expensive jeans and then compare....sometimes they can make you look sizes smaller
then once you have a brand that makes you look amazing... stalk on sale and ebay etc

leg wise...i think that skinny straight is best on most of us from fat to thin
bootcut unless a v skinny bootcut make most look fatter
v skinny make lots look like a parsnip

darker wash looks better on most
beware highlighting unless it sits perfectly where wear would be and fades to the sides...then it is great and contours...loads are just crap though
beware manmade rips and paint splodges etc ...try hard is still try hard

thekingfisher · 09/02/2016 20:14

My 70 year old mother wears skinny dark jeans and boots - she looks fab! She wears ones from Zara!

WeetabixExpress · 09/02/2016 20:25

M&S 5 pocket jeggings all the way. The Denim ones. Just comfy and fit right. They are highwsisted and keep the Mummytummy firmly in place.

SirChenjin · 09/02/2016 20:29

M&S jeggings here too - brilliant things. I wear them with chunky boots or flats. I also really like bootcut jeans, but they have to be well fitting - Gap long and lean are fab. Straight are also good.

StrapOnDodo · 09/02/2016 20:34

I wear emerald/burgundy skinnies as well as black, navy and black. I'm mid forties and couldn't care what anyone thinks!

Floisme · 09/02/2016 20:35

If we're talking age appropriate, I'll tell you what I look worse with every passing year in:

Linen.

Saggy, baggy, creased; hard to tell difference between my body and my trousers.

Denim on the other hand, is like corsetry.

allegretto · 09/02/2016 20:46

Thanks! Just to clarify, I didn't mean that I was too old for jeans but too old for the onew I've got - my tummy sticks out of low waisted ones and not in a good way.

OP posts:
RonaldMcDonald · 09/02/2016 21:25

Floisme

agreed about linen looking vastly ghastly on most
m&s did some linen peg legs last summer that I hauled on on the beach but they were about the only acceptable trousers that I saw

wide leg linen...shudder

Floisme · 09/02/2016 21:41

I know Ronald. It's got to be the worst possible look for a middle aged or elderly body and yet every summer they try and fob us off with them.

It's a conspiracy I tell you.

SanityClause · 09/02/2016 21:45

I am 47, and wear skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans. I sometimes also wear boot cut jeans. All high-ish waisted, though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/02/2016 22:11

I have the M&S 5 pocket jeggings ( light denim colour) that I wear with boots or Converse
And Next Slim'n'Lift BC in a dark denim (with a shoeboot)
Both need a belt.
Makes going to the loo a plan ahead excercise (I'm nearly 50) so most days the M&S pull on jeggings wins.

The M&S jeans weren't flattering on me .

PacificDogwod · 09/02/2016 22:13

49 and living in GAP Real Straights and recent convert to Jeggings Grin

Dark colours and high waist + well-cut, but not tight top looks good IMO.

Potterwolfie · 09/02/2016 22:19

I'm 40+, 5ft 11 and a 14 bottom half so no skinnies here unless covered practically to the knee!

Bought some extra long Roma rise Per Una straight jeans from M&S recently after seeing them recommended on here. They're v comfortable, higher waist, great stretch but retain their shape.

Ididnthearanything · 09/02/2016 22:20

Gap resolution slim straights.

Yy, Flo and Ronald, agree with the linen thing. Awful. What is it? Probably is a conspiracy. Someone HAS to buy the linen. Fat in a ziplock bag. (Not saying either of you are fat, but I have my lumps and bumps.)

NewLife4Me · 09/02/2016 22:23

I wear high waisted or normal fit, not low rise or hipsters.
This isn't my age but lack of height and my size.
I think you should try several pairs until you find one that looks right.
i'm 49 and wear any type really but also don't do the rippe ones, unless I've done it myself by accident Grin

rookiemere · 09/02/2016 22:28

I bought a new pair from Next at the weekend - cigarette style. They're a little bit more relaxed than skinnies, but not that baggy boyfriend style which only works if you have no hips.
I'm 45 and i think they look great and at 32 a lot cheaper than the Mint Velvet skinnies I usually buy.

Floisme · 09/02/2016 23:14

Ididnt Grin Not fat but untoned and getting saggy, which is why fabrics with a bit of heft, like denim, are my friends. leather is another.

It is a conspiracy, I'm convinced of it. They don't want us to look good.

#Resistthelinen#

Anyway sorry op, waistlines are getting back to normal now so it's safe to go jeans shopping again. As I think I said upthread, I'm back in straighlegs,

heartyrebel · 10/02/2016 06:31

try the asos ridley jeans. They are skinny but they're super stretchy so feel like a legging. They are very high waisted and with a longer top (not the cropped or tucked in look they photograph them in) they're really great value.

Abraid2 · 10/02/2016 08:01

These are the skinny jeans from Boden I like. In the indigo.

Abraid2 · 10/02/2016 08:02

Note, not super skinny, but the ones below, just skinny.

Because there are limits. Wink
