Why can't I wear lipstick?!

Titsywoo · 04/02/2016 21:46

I have tried a variety of colours and I always look like a clown. My friends didn't believe me until I showed them using a selection of their lipsticks. I do have fairly full lips (not massive but certainly plump). Am I just destined to be a lip gloss person or am I missing a trick?

These are the lips in question Grin

You don't need lipstick if you ask me.
You have great lips.
Some people just can't and look like a clown or they have jam on their face.

Mabelface · 04/02/2016 21:51

I don't see any reason why you can't wear lipstick. You've got a beautiful pout - look at people like Angelina Jolie who have similar. I reckon you've just not found a colour that you're comfortable with yet. You could so do bright red - it takes a bit of getting used to and seems too much at first, but you'd look great.

Mabelface · 04/02/2016 21:52

Oh, and one trick is to use a lip liner, then apply the lipstick with a brush. Blot with a tissue, then brush again, and then do that once more.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2016 22:09

Maybe I have just tried the wrong red? Or I guess I tend to try it on with a bare face rather than a full face of makeup? Also my lips are naturally sort of cracked looking so the lipstick sinks into the cracks.

Always use a liner to stop lipstick bleeds but you should be able to wear most colours. Depending on whether you're a warm: peaches, browns, brick red or a cool: pinks and purpley wine reds.

SaveSomeSpendSome · 04/02/2016 22:15

Your lips are much fuller than the average lips, both top and bottom!

Because they are quite big, when you apply colour to them then it makes them really stand out.

I think you need to look at nude colours or very pale pink colours. I think red or any other bright colour would make them too much of a feature on your face and then they will be the first think people look at when they see you.

Titsywoo · 04/02/2016 22:28

Yes that's what I think SaveSome. It is just too much. Especially with pale skin. I don't know how Angelina Jolie gets away with it. I suppose being incredibly beautiful helps!

I would recommend some natural colours or bordering on mauve/very light plum. Mac lipsticks are my favourite so my recommendations come from there-I think Pattiserrie, Plumful, Fast Play or Capricious would all look great on you as they add a nice colour but in a fairly subtle way. You have a great mouth by the way, lots of people pay for that look! Grin

Titsy I have the same shape lips (and colouring) as you and I just wear tinted lip gloss.

Cheesymonster · 05/02/2016 06:45

I'd kill for those lips. Maybe start with a tinted lip balm? Burt's Bees are good.

TheCarpenter · 05/02/2016 11:25

I ordered loads of mini samples from Avon. £1 for 3. And tried loads before I found ONE colour I can wear.

With lips like yours though, I'd go for a really nice gloss to cover the cracks and go natural. You have beautiful lips.

Envy
MadameDePompom · 05/02/2016 11:35

You're just not used to seeing yourself in lipstick. That's all it is.

Wagglebees · 05/02/2016 11:36

There are lipsticks that are pretty sheer so more like a balm than a really pigmented lipstick. Chanel coco rouge shine lipsticks are really nice. You can build them up but one layer is pretty sheer and slightly glossy.

Standingonmytippytoes · 05/02/2016 11:40

I'm the same big lips don't like to bring alot of attention to them I tend to stick to vaseline I did find a lovely plum lip crayon from revlon. That took some getting used to and sometimes I still can't use it but I get so many compliments when I do that gives me a push.

CMOTDibbler · 05/02/2016 11:44

I have very full lips too, and though I wouldn't wear lipstick without a full face of lipstick on, I love wearing true red and dark lipsticks in the evening - daytime I like a sheer hot pink atm

OneofTHOSEWomen · 05/02/2016 11:50

Try a lip stain or a Matt lipstick rather than a glossy one.

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 05/02/2016 12:00

Your lips are amazing. You could try lip stains to get some subtle colour without the glossyness of a gloss and the shine of a lipstick.

I use benefits lip and cheek stains. This one's lollitint and they also have posie which is a light pink and would be gorgeous on your skin tone, cha cha which is a mango and may be too orange and the original benetint. Go to a counter and try before you buy.

Do you have quite an expressive face? I find that I look a bit odd in bright lipstick because my face moves lots.

mrsvilliers · 05/02/2016 12:26

Beautiful lips that would look fab with lipstick. I very much agree with MadamedePomPom that you're just not used to it. Try a few out that are a couple of shades darker than your natural colour and see how that goes. Also best to try and find a moisturising one, I am a lip gloss addict but use a Laura Mercier moisturusing one when I want a bit more depth of colour.

mewkins · 05/02/2016 13:17

Similar issue here!!! I have found revlon lip butters- much more subtle but give nice colour! I use sugar plum, berry smoothie and the peach one which is almost nude but gives a subtle shine.

CreviceImp · 05/02/2016 13:55

You are low contrast and warm so your lipstick needs to reflect that. Look at colours for soft autumns.

TheCatsMeow · 05/02/2016 14:23

Crevice has it.

It's to do with contrast. I'm high contrast and look bizarre without bold lipstick!

Cheesymonster · 05/02/2016 16:14

How do you know what one you are?
