How often do you wash your hair??

I have always washed my hair every morning as it's very fine and has a tendency to get greasy quickly. I'm currently trying to 'train' it and only wash it every other day but have also taken up a new regime where I'm exercising 2-3 evenings a week which is making it feel a bit grubby/sweaty so I'm ending up washing it twice a day instead!!
I can't win!!!

Every morning - I have a short, sharp Louise Brooks style bob and it does not do well after sleeping on it. I tend to have a bath on a Friday night and wash it again after that, or if I'm going out in the evening.

SevenSeconds · 03/02/2016 21:45

Around once every 5 days

maybemyrtle · 03/02/2016 21:54

It was shoulder length or longer for years and I washed it twice a week. Didn't get greasy or itch, just looked better from day 2 onwards. However now it's jaw length it has to be washed every or every other day, it seems to get greasier and lacklustre and the condition has deteriorated. Not sure how to deal with it now to be honest.

MeadowHay · 03/02/2016 21:57

Every other day, with dry shampoo on the day in the middle. I wash it again though on the off days if I've got sweaty doing exercise, or if I've been swimming, or if I'm going out in the evening then I'll wash it before that. My hair gets really greasy, it is absolutely gross on the 3rd day and dry shampoo cannot save it. I would love to just not leave the house for a month to 'train' it so that it won't get as greasy and I can wash it every 3rd day or something but I cannot leave the house like that!! :( Like another pp I also have quite greasy skin on my face too (and acne as a result). My hair is a weird shortish in betweeny length atm because I had it really short for ages and now just haven't had it cut for ages, looks terrible and is seriously in need of a cut!

2,or 3 times a week.

fiorentina · 03/02/2016 22:06

Every day. It doesn't look greasy but after commuting I want to feel clean!

dudsville · 03/02/2016 22:08

I spend a lot of time in a much hotter and drier climate and there I can go to one wash a week. Here I wash 2/3 times a week but that's a hard limit to keep to and would rather wash every 1.5 days!

Bounced · 03/02/2016 22:13

Very short bob which I wash about every third day, doesn't look greasy until day four or five. It also dries nicely into shape without any brushing or blow drying.

But I do have ongoing problems with eczema on my scalp (currently Moo Goo seems to be keeping it at bay) so I could probably do with a bit more oiliness.

BackforGood · 03/02/2016 22:14

Twice a week - once every 5 days

It will be greasy if you are washing it everyday - you are creating that look.

shatteredstudentmum · 03/02/2016 22:16

About 5-7 days on average, occasionally longer. I don't use commercial shampoo / conditioner and it doesn't really get greasy any more. I brush it every night and it's lovely in the morning again.

Before I stopped using shampoo I was still fairly lazy and it was usually 2/3 times a week at most.

ThisWasCrownjewel · 03/02/2016 22:22

Once a week at the moment (pregnant and it's dried out a lot!) with a quick blast of dry shampoo on day 4 or 5. Usually gets tied back on days 6 and 7 though.

leadrightfoot · 03/02/2016 22:28

Every day
Can't use batiste or similar it sets off psoriasis type inflammation that takes weeks to clear if it doesn't get infected
Never got it to 2 days without it looking wet it is that greasy
Looks fab so soft and good condition takes an extra 4 mins to wash and blow dry over pratting about with dry shampoo so no great shakes
It's coloured too makes no odds

MintChocAddict · 03/02/2016 22:30

I now have to wash every second day. Used to get away with twice a week but when I came off the pill my hair changed and much more prone to greasiness. Also get more spots now too. Lovely.

Teddy1970 · 03/02/2016 22:31

I wash mine everyday to, you can't beat that feeling of a clean, bouncy head of hair! I wake up with lank hair and no matter what I do, it always looks and feels greasy and I just feel better when I wash it.

TattyDevine · 03/02/2016 22:31

I wash mine every second day. I can get away with every 3rd day, but because I am blonde at the moment it looks "brighter" if I wash it every 2nd day around the root area anyway.

I use dry shampoo, partly for root lift, on the day I wash it, which may seem weird, but I find it just keeps it looking fresh and doesn't look powdery if I do it that way. I don't use much though.

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2016 22:32

Every morning, because it's very fine & looks awful if I don't.

hollieberrie · 03/02/2016 22:45

Twice a week max. Often just once. Dry shampoo is my greatest friend Grin

LovelyFriend · 03/02/2016 23:13

Every third day. It used to be every 2nd day but now every 3rd is fine.

AppleJuiceFlood · 03/02/2016 23:23

Every 2nd day. I can't bear to leave it longer than that or it looks and feels horrible.
On the no wash days, I use dry shampoo and tend to wear it up.

azimazi · 03/02/2016 23:34

not read full thread but I had the same issue... recently came across "co-washing" which is using conditioner to wash your hair, as it contains small amounts of the cleansers that clean your hair without stripping it completely of the natural oils (meaning it's less likely to overproduce oil as a result and you're more likely to break the "wash every day" cycle). You need to use a large amount and really work it through to the scalp but if you want to cut down on washing it's great as you can get away with it for a lot longer than not-shampooing. Hair feels cleaner and softer afterwards... maybe shampoo once every week with using conditioner every couple of days instead?

Also try the conditioner before shampooing which worked well for me a couple of times when I tried it, but just "co-washing" as above worked better for me.

I'm currently trying my best to ease out of a washing every day thing and these have worked well for me so far.

madmother1 · 03/02/2016 23:38

Once a week. I top up with a dry shampoo daily though. Wink

Arrowedheart · 03/02/2016 23:39

I do mine everyday. Can't get away with dry shampoo it makes my hair feel awful. By the time I've faffed about with it it would've been easier to wash.

katesmith25 · 04/02/2016 06:24

Washing your hair too often may lead to hair that’s less than lush.If you have oily scalp, then daily washing is needed.

Sometimes, people think they have dry scalp because they have dandruff and want dandruff control remedies, but in those situations, more frequent washing is also helpful.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 04/02/2016 08:01

I used to wash it every second day and not at weekends, but then it started falling out. I think copious amounts of dry shampoo/hair powder were building up on my scalp and my SLS-free shampoo wasn't getting it off properly. I now wash every day with sulphate-free shampoo (but not at weekends), and if I do use dry shampoo then I wash with an SLS shampoo to get it off.

JasperDamerel · 04/02/2016 08:12

I wash mine around twice a week. It's long, thick, wavy and takes around half an hour to dry with a hairdryer or most of the day to air dry. I am growing out my fringe at the moment so tend to wear it up, which looks better slightly greasy anyway.
