Well Gap seems to think! I bought some skinny jeans from Gap Outlet earlier (Bargain!) and easily fitted the uk size 4 (25s) if they had a 24 in stock I'm convinced I would of squeezed into them too!

Of course in truth I'm 5ft 9 and a size 8 but hey my ego got a boost! Grin Tho should I really be aspiring to a ridiculous size for my frame- probably not Hmm

Yes they do. Obviously there are some very petite small framed women who would take a uk 4. I started with the 10s as I thought they may come up big and then went down and down and down! It was stupid but I have ended up with a lovely fitting pair of jeans, this was the point of the thread. Glad I went in store as I would have got it wrong ordering online.

Good grief the hand wringing on this thread!Shock Knowing GAP if the OP went back next month and got the same jeans they would a 4,6 or 8. I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to work out that OP meant, I know I am a size 8, how could I possibly be a 4?!

The way vanity sizing is going there will be more size 4s soon. In the U.S. size 0 is no longer the smallest size. It's now 000. Like, really? Why can't they just standardise the sizes?! Or maybe it's a ploy to make us all go to the shops.

CountryRoadTakeMeHome · 26/01/2016 17:05

Should have posted on AIBU, as obviously I am being unreasonable to suggest that Gap sizing is way way off true sizing in Style and beauty! I will take heed.... I am so boasting and gleeful Confused

It's not so much about your posts OP but the posts that have followed, that's surprised me.
I agree sizing difference is ridiculous.
As is putting too much importance on a number. An 8 should be an 8 in every shop, at least to make it easier to shop. Sometimes different styles of clothes m

SummerHouse · 26/01/2016 17:08

Thought you meant feet. Came on to say me too. Whoop whoop high five!

KittyHello · 26/01/2016 17:08

That's so true Blingy JCrew for instance, I can take an S in their jumpers if I want want a slightly looser fit, not baggy or slouchy, or an X-Small if I want it a bit more fitted and by that I mean the sleeves are a bit tight, I'm a size 8. Now I'm very curious as to what size you need to be to order the XX-Small and the XXX- Small.

If they still had free returns I'd be quite tempted to see exactly how small the XXX- small is. Shock Wonder if it's a coincidence that they are an American too like Gap?

Outaboutnowt · 26/01/2016 17:09

*mean you take a different size. But a pp saying she goes from an 8 to 14 depending on the shop is crazy.

BumWad · 26/01/2016 17:14

Gap sizing is silly as an American brand it's tailored to the 'larger' 'American' population. I think

fitzbilly · 26/01/2016 17:19

I don't know why some people are getting worked up. This is light hearted.

I cannot but gap trousers that fit me, they are all too big and I'm usually a six to 8 and five foot seven in heigh.

Next have huge clothes, words than gap, nothing ever fits. H and m and Zara are fine though.

enjoyingscience · 26/01/2016 17:26

No experience of Gap (but might head there is I need to be deluded cheered up), but I have the same at lots of places.

I think I am: 10-12 (bigger on bottom than top)
M&S - 8 (usually too big)
Boden - 8
H&M - 8 - 10 on top, 10-14 for trousers (WTF)
Topshop - 10 on top, 12 (+) for trousers
Next - Don't bother. Nothing fits. Maaasive clothes.

Longislandicetee · 26/01/2016 17:34

School girl error Country! Sometimes S&B is worse than AIBU. have you not read the bag threads?Grin

Kitty, I wear xxs in j crew for a slim fit, the xs is slouchy on me. The xxs is a good fit on the waist but snug on top because of the boobs. You have met meGrin...I am the small side of a size 6. I think to be a xxxs that would equate to a size 4. One of my (Indian) friends is this small - petite and very small frame.

Mominatrix · 26/01/2016 17:51

Now I know why I am now a US000. I have not gained any weight since turning 20 over 2 decades ago, and back then I was a us4 (and I still wear something from then!). Not stealth boasting, just bemused as to why I numerically am shrinking to preposterous sizes whilst saying the same shape.

Longislandicetee · 26/01/2016 19:02

Hi Mominatrix, yes that would be tight as you're a size smaller than me and I go between size 00 and 0. I remember when I lived in the U.S. years ago I was a US size 6.Hmm I expect in a few years time there will be more zeros. in my experience only Italian sizing has stayed consistent. I never buy anything online now without double checking their size guide and looking at their measurements as every retailer is different and some returns can be expensive.

IronMaggie · 26/01/2016 19:26

Are Americans really bigger than us? (I know the stereotype but surely Brits have got larger over the years too?).

In that case, maybe they could change the US-UK size difference so that a UK 10 is a US4 rather than US6 - that would help us at any rate. I think...? Actually ignore that suggestion. This is like currencies and time zones - I find them equally baffling!

Passthecake30 · 26/01/2016 20:56

I completely understand the OP, being 6ft and a size 6-8 in next sometimes....when I am nowhere near that size, it's just a bit of a giggle, I know that I'm not that slim really. I do feel sorry for the people who are really that size though, there's nowhere to go apart from the kids section

CountryRoadTakeMeHome · 26/01/2016 21:11

As I was trying them on in the cubicle I was like- I'm a 4 errrrr not! Hmm Still a super fit though Grin

OP posts:
toffeeboffin · 27/01/2016 01:38

Best thing about living in Canada is that I'm a size six!

Ooooh, I'm just soooo lean and willowy (leans dramatically against a large plastic block and holds pose) it's not even true!

OhSoggyBiscuit · 27/01/2016 03:46

Ugh I hate their sizing!!! I can never figure out the correct sizing for jeans- took me 30 minutes of looking through a pile of jeans once and still didn't find the right size.

Which is stupid because I have jeans from there and they're almost perfect.

Holly34 · 27/01/2016 05:00

Enjoy!! I miss wearing jeans :( Got a goal to reach once baby arrives!! Walk Walk Walk!!!!!

bigbuttons · 27/01/2016 07:43

Gap sizing is completely erratic. In some of their trousers even the 00 is too big for me.Yet in others the 26" is too small.
I have also tried on trousers in exactly the same size and style but different colours and have found that one pair fitted, the other didn't. The sizing seems to be meaningless. I have a pair of jeans I bought in my early 20's ( I'm now in my late 40's). The jeans are a pair of size 10 skinnies and I can barely get into them. I could use a modern day size 10 as a temporary tent.

flanjabelle · 27/01/2016 07:58

If you enjoy vanity sizing, pop on over to next. I'm a size 6 in there. An 8-10 everywhere else. The sizing is all over the place! I darent order anything fitted from there online as I have no idea if it will fit or not!

bigbuttons · 27/01/2016 08:21

I used to quite like next. I knew their trousers would fit me. Now all their clothes are far too big.

Longislandicetee · 27/01/2016 09:20

Yes, I used to get stuff from next petite as they and Principles used to recognise that petites might exist. Now their next petite in size 6 is about 2 sizes too big and I am an ordinary petite.Hmm
