My lovely DD had all her hair cut off yesterday. She's been thinking about it for ages so it wasn't a mad impulse.
She took a cute picture of an Anne Hathaway pixie cut with her. She also had some colour as she wanted to be blonder. She's very upset with how it looks and thinks is it is very middle aged and not pixie! I think she looks gorgeous but agree that the cut and colour isn't brilliant. It's so short though that we don't know how to change it...Are there any hairdressers out there who could advise? Can the cut be rescued without taking loads more off?? Please please help, I was so proud of her for being brave and going for a change and she's so upset.

Worst case for tomorrow, I'd wear it all forward, making as much of a fringe as possible.
Or style it up and messy with gel.

It also needs a single colour and to avoid further damage, I'd go with dark brown at this stage.

Lweji · 17/01/2016 14:05

If you can't find a woman's hairdresser, I'd try a men's salon. They are used to different short styles.

burnishedsilver · 17/01/2016 14:06

I agree, she is going to need to go somewhere edgy/trendy to fix this. However, it is fixable. The cut might work if she sytles it herself but the colour is not good.

Dd went from long to short and had the same reaction

We went shorter at the back and sides and left the top to grow out a bit -also went for a block blonde

I think the hairdresser was too nervous to cut it short enough to make it look good -so she shouldn't have cut it!

Your dd is doing better than mine though -she took to her bed for 24 hours with a duvet over her head and just cried!

SavoyCabbage · 17/01/2016 14:07

It needs to be shorter I think. I think some hairdressers are scared of going too short, probably because they place a higher value on hair than the rest of us!

MrsSchadenfreude · 17/01/2016 14:07

My first thought was Claire Balding or Sandi Toskvig too!

If you're in London, there are plenty of places open that could sort it out.

Oh dear, the poor bean. That really is a bad cut and a terrible colour. The colour is easy to fix and i agree with all the PPs that the cut is repairable. I don't think it's a million miles away if it were styled well.

Did she have it thinned? My hair is short and thick and looks mumsy and blocky if it's not thinned carefully.

Good luck. It would be great if you could post some 'after' photos.

I love Claire Balding but tbh that haircut has become so distinctively hers, I think that's half the problem.

here are my thoughts (not that I'm an expert!)

if she can bear to do the bleach blonde thing and get it done even shorter - but it needs to be done as a proper pixie crop, which that isn't. I know how hairdressers have crazy ideas about shape because they seem to battle with my hair which should be easy!! But yes, that it not a pixie crop to me.

if she wants to leave it alone, could she face going darker because to be honest, any variation of blonde is going to leave that hair looking very Claire Balding.

I'm not sure how to do a pixie crop without an awkward growing out stage that looks like that - I have a friend who has been bleaching her hair platinum for about 30 years and she had a crop partly to get rid of a bunch of damaged hair. The crop looked lovely but growing it out was hard.

DogStuff · 17/01/2016 14:12

Oh gosh, don't show her this thread!

I would throw money at it and demand refund from other hairdressers (show them this thread instead!).

Agree - wouldn't normally say it, but take day off school - she won't learn if she is upset like that.

It's still long enough to do lots with - she will be fine Smile

PS: pls update with eventual lovely cut!

LagoonaBlu · 17/01/2016 14:16

The photo mrsd linked, is great

I've had many hair disasters along these lines

I agree with a day off school tomorrow to fix it

DramaQueenofHighCs · 17/01/2016 14:17

Nothing much to add, but your poor DD. I work in a school but also agree with day off to get it sorted - just say she was sick over the weekend or something and still feels queasy!
Hope she gets it sorted soon!

PoppieD · 17/01/2016 14:17

I have been there! Google Casey Mulligan for a pixie chop for a youngster- she went super short and was lovely x

Oh, the poor thing. I agree with everyone else, throw money at the problem. And find someone very good with short hair to cut it into a proper pixie.

It looks like she has beautiful, thick hair in lovely condition. There's plenty there to work with and it is fixable.

MrsKoala · 17/01/2016 14:19

Oh poor poor her. It has happened to most of us tho. I remember going to a hairdressers with my long dark hair and a picture of naomi campbell with skunk stripes and asking for some soft layering too. I came out looking like i was in a 70s glam rock tribute band. The colour was the same as you dd's all over and the layering was cut similarly too at the top and then chopped into all the way down the length. It was truly horrible. My friends who were meeting me in the bar next to the hairdressers immediately pissed themselves laughing and put their hands on their hips and started doing that 70s shoulder dancing. I also got the nickname 'Alsatian'. It was brutal.

Anyway, i agree with others, either go darker or much lighter all over. Shorter round the sides. The parting is the worst part i think. Depending on face shape (mine is round/oval) i would go for a little height on the crown, no parting and all hair coming forward and held with putty. much shorter on the sides and nape too.

It really isn't a pixie cut. you should go back to the hairdresser and complain. (also thought Clare Balding when i first saw it - sorry Clare, you are great, but i doubt it's the look teens are going for)

ShhhBeQuiet · 17/01/2016 14:21

The dye job is really bad Sad

I think shorter all over with some definite tapering into the neck and ears and leaving the fringe longer and coming forward.

I find with my short hair that it makes a big difference how the hair at the back of my nape is cut. If it's cut straight across it looks awful and blokey but if it's feathered and tapered in it looks feminine and pretty.

When she gets it cut suggest that the hairdressers shows her how to style it. She might need new brushes to be able to dry it properly.

I have similar thick hair and use l'Oreal Liss Control on it. It smooths it down but doesn't smell or feel heavy. I swear by it,

Found a few reference photos for you - I'm sure all of these would be doable by adjusting what your daughter currently has.

Oh what a shame - don't think the hair being brushed back rather than down helps - she needs better colour - looks really old fashioned - really feel for her!

Take her back to the manager -

Oh your poor DD. I had a similar experience as a teenager so I truly sympathise. I agree with others, it can be fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. All the best with it!

Bluebell20 · 17/01/2016 14:25

And these... The hair needs razoring, not scissoring, to take the weight out and to get that lovely pointy look.

She will be amazed at how quickly this can be fixed :)

I think it depends on face shape. If she has a long and angular face perhaps something more mia farrow circa rosemary's baby, if she has a softer wider/rounder facecperhaps more audrey hepburn roman holiday/michelle williams.

Frazzled2207 · 17/01/2016 14:28

Oh dear. I think the colour makes it worse than it is, but both the cut and the colour should be fixable.
I would try and help her get it fixed tomorrow instead of going to school.
Hairdresser needs to be complained about, but should not be trusted to fix it.
However a more senior stylist at the same place may be able to help?
