Real leather leggings.

I find it hard to pull myself away from J.Crew.

CaveMum · 20/01/2016 22:12

I popped into a local boutique store at lunchtime as their annual new year sale is on. I've picked up some bargains in there in the past as they have up to 75% off. However I almost burst a blood vessel when I saw the price tag on a nice (but not mind blowing) cashmere jumper marked at 40% off - £187 Shock Shock Shock

SarfEast1cated · 20/01/2016 22:35

boffin please explain what's the catch of the handbags? Surely they can't be leather at those prices? I'm confused.

Drywhitethanks · 20/01/2016 22:43

I bought the Birkin copy from Vanilla about 10 years ago. It was leather. It was great quality, and looked lovely. Got rid when I culled my handbags a couple of years ago.

Re fabrics Hamiltoe, I keep away from mmf especially acrylic knitwear that bobbles and looks cheap very quickly. Don't like viscose/polyester mixes too much either.

I think I dress nicely, but I have a parka because I live where it's bloody freezing and nothing else will do.

Drywhitethanks · 20/01/2016 22:44

Not really a parka, more of a down filled coat with belt

BoffinMum · 20/01/2016 23:30

SarfEast, yes, they are leather but not the same as you would get in an original bag. At the sale price they represent good value for money IMO

Right, news. The Ines de la Fressange range has just gone live at Uniqlo and it's pretty posh looking in a casual sort of way. I have ordered a blue blazer and a spotty blouse.

Re: leather look leggings...it's a matter of how you style them, non? I've seen expensive, real leather leggings styled like a dogs dinner....equally seen leather look ones styled with cashmere, clever layering and look great.
As BeaufortBelle rightly says, it's about fun. It shouldn't be about a subjective, prescriptive Madame Dariaux idea of elegance, but more about individual interpretion.

goingmadinthecountry · 21/01/2016 00:18

There's fun, then there's expensive looking. Was in a private club at the weekend with proper rich looking people. They weren't fun, but I can absolutely guarantee that RI didn't figure at all. I'm talking proper expensive. I'm not saying it's right and I'm not saying it's what I'd wear. The Me & Em leather leggings are a different matter, though they sold out pretty quickly.

Probably just me, but my idea of expensive seems to be much more understated than what many people on here are looking for.

GarlicBake · 21/01/2016 00:28

Drywhite - viscose, rayon and acetate fibres are made from natural sources (normally wood pulp, cotton shreds or hemp) and, despite being chemically processed, have the qualities of organic fibres. Some viscose fabrics are incredible for feel, drape and colour intensity.

Modern fabrics made by pulp extrusion are getting more amazing by the year. It's a mistake to dismiss all 'man-made' fibres out of hand. As with all such things, you really need to feel the stuff for yourself and consider how its properties match up with your intended use for it.

Wagglebees · 21/01/2016 00:31

Still confused as to the definition of expensive looking. I don't want to look rich, I want to look polished, put together and confident.

Perhaps it's just incredibly subjective.

GarlicBake · 21/01/2016 00:41

There's fun, then there's expensive looking.

Grin

I used to have a mad Issey Miyake pleated top. Quite a lot of people thought it was something I picked up in a craft market. Similar people also thought my individually-crafted furniture came from Habitat.

There's none so blind as s/he who will not see! But expensive can be fun. (And should, in my opinion.)

HappyGirlNow · 21/01/2016 04:59

maidrin the thread is about how to look 'expensive' not fun. If the leggings looked like real leather and were styled well maybe they could look 'expensive'. Those leggings look (to me) cheap and fake and therefore could never look expensive or stylish or chic (or however you want to describe it) no matter how they're styled.

BeaufortBelle · 21/01/2016 06:52

I don't think there's any need for unkindness.

One person's,expensive is nit the same as another's and maidrin had £100 to spend.

HappyGirlNow · 21/01/2016 07:42

'Unkindness' belle ? Don't be ridiculous. If you post on a forum you invite opinions that may or may not agree with yours. Not unkind at all, my honest opinion.

GrinAndTonic · 21/01/2016 08:06

I want so much from the uniqlo/Ines line. Of course it is much more expensive here. One particular skirt is UK29.90 and AUD79.00 which means that I have to pay $19 more for the same bloody skirt (I also couldn't find the pound sign on this laptop).

MaidrinRua · 21/01/2016 08:16

No offence taken.

AmberNectarine · 21/01/2016 09:09

This blogger is wearing pleather leggings and I think she looks great!

Higge · 21/01/2016 09:13

Amber, agree she looks great but those pleather leggings are £175! Shock

BeaufortBelle · 21/01/2016 09:21

Now, I don't think she looks great at all. I think the leggings, the jumper and the coat are lovely and could all look stylish and swish but it is let down completely by the awful white trainers, ghastly sunglasses and to my mind the cheap looking chunky gold bracelet over the chunky metal watch. The bracelet and watch might be worth thousands but to me they look vulgar.

The look would be far better with ankle boots, a simple watch and nicer sunglasses. It doesn't matter how much the leggings cost - some of the accessories make the overall look a bit cheap in my opinion.

This thread seems to have very much evolved from the first one, which was about looking 'expensive', to just finding one's own style, and particular looks people like.

Pleather leggings lady doesn't look 'expensive'.

TheDowagerCuntess · 21/01/2016 09:44

P.s. It's not her fault - nobody can make leggings + trainers (+ animal print!) outside a gym look expensive. 😁

Bonxie · 21/01/2016 10:01

She does look like she'd be fun at a party though!

AppleSetsSail · 21/01/2016 10:02

I think the pleather leggings & trainers look great, very hip/young and kind of incongruous in a way that works.

I had a pair of really amazing faux-snakeskin leggings in the early 2000's and they were an eternal favourite, super flattering and interesting, but they made me sweat profusely. Ugh. I had to wear cotton tights underneath to make them bearable, which led to general discomfort.

BeaufortBelle · 21/01/2016 10:08

This has made me recall the trend for taupe/flesh coloured uber tight leggings (so tight, they were almost tights) in Sarf London a couple of years ago. The number of times I did a double take to make sure an older teen hadn't forgotten to put on her skirt, literally, was amazing. I'm sure they thought they looked super cool; it was hideous to the point of being hilarious - I'm surprised it was never picked up by the Little Britain team Grin.
