You'd have to wear a beige cardigan with it Grin To keep warm in our less than boiling summers.

MotherofFlagons · 08/01/2016 22:56

No, I think whoever earlier who said that they are trying to appeal to the edgy but doing it wrong was correct.

M&S are never going to to be edgy and they need to stop trying to be. If hipsters want leather dungarees/shirt dress, they will not buy them from M&S. They will buy them from some uncomfortable pop-up shop in Hackney run by a bearded Swedish person in fishing trousers.

Just give us nice basics, FFS! No sequins/beads/lace, no embroidery, normal person sizes, not purple and stuff that we can actually wear!

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 22:59

even when they make things I might like to buy, they get it wrong. I quite like the look of these for home/comfy trousers. But I'm not going to buy these, even on sale as they are 45% polyester. And polyester joggers are pants!

Looking through the sale, pretty much everything is a disaster. Who wants a peach coloured naff looking winter coat? Hands up?

ppeat yes your wrists will look great as they are not covered by the hideous dress :)

Didiusfalco · 08/01/2016 23:01

I have a confession:
My name is Didi and i quite like M&S Blush
Good things i have had from there relatively recently include:
Nursing bras
Indigo cord leggings - love these, so soft and wash well.
swimming costume - has stomach control and make my saggy norks look fantastic, wish all my clothes could do this.
Supersoft pyjamas - 90% cotton amazingly comfortable.
Nice jumper with mohair - soft and warm, muted colour.
Baby girl sleep suits, in a colour other than the mandatory pale pink.
I must admit though, I never go in to the actual shop. Im busy, dont like shopping, order in to the local M&S food, pick up and walk out - easy! The fabric composition is clearly displayed on their website and you cam filter by fabric so dont even need to look at anything polyester.
There are still good things to be had! (I dont work for them - honest!)

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 23:02

I've been buying Per Una dark denim straight leg jeans for years. Perfect fit for my shape - great job M&S.

TheMightyMing · 08/01/2016 23:02

I am wetting myself laughing here !!!

But seriously , I am 44 now but when I was 24 and out clubbing , I could walk into M and S and pick out a pair of foxy boot cuts or a pair of shorts to wear with tights ( this was the 90's) , the clothes were brilliant and well made.

The only thing I buy there now are sports bras which, in spite of the underwear being generally awful, are actually very good.

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 23:05

how do you do this? I can't for the life of me figure it out?

Lurkedforever1 · 08/01/2016 23:06

What amuses me about their excuse for high end fashion is that most of their designs need high end catwalk figures to avoid looking like Austin powers does dfs. And yet being m&s they don't even make small sizes, and the more unflattering the style, the more likelihood of them only stocking it in large sizes.

tilder · 08/01/2016 23:07

I have just realised where I am going wrong.

I thought m&s clothes were supposed to be affordable quality. Wardrobe staples. Regular well fitting items that I know will be there and I know will fit. With a seasonal update eg colour.

That isn't their model and hasn't been for years.

So unless m&s revert to a 20 year old business model, where do I go for those classic wardrobe staples?

Jaegar is £££. Jigsaw ditto. White company greige £££. White stuff/fat face are heading for m&s land.

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 23:08

tidler I think everyone now trotts across the road to Uniqlo

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 23:09

tilder! Blush

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/01/2016 23:09

There was one of their models that had a really odd pose.
Sort of face jutting forward, sneery , "Yeah what " look .
The sort of face if your child pulled you'd wipe off them with a slap "Don't you look at me like that, Missy"

So I don;t want a model who is trying to sell me the dream of "Yes, you could look like me" to really be saying:
"In your dreams you old bat, and sucks to you, what - ever "

Bunbaker · 08/01/2016 23:10

"tidler I think everyone now trotts across the road to Uniqlo"

They are only in London.

tilder · 08/01/2016 23:12

We don't have uniqlo sadly. Will look on line. Do they do proper sizing or do they size to flatter?

Don't worry re the username. Predictive text does stuff like that to me all the time.

RomComPhooey · 08/01/2016 23:14

Thise trousers put me in mind of the Elmer book with his monochrome cousin (Wilbur?). Hideous!

IDismyname · 08/01/2016 23:28

It speaks volumes that the tomato red roll neck jumper sold out.

Good quality basics WILL SELL.

Oh wake up M&S!! I'm sick of posting about you on MN!!

LovelyFriend · 08/01/2016 23:28

Uniqlo are Japanese so if anything I'd say the sizing is on the smallish side.
They do good quality basics very well though.

HanSolo · 08/01/2016 23:34

I haven't shopped in M&S for the last four years or so. The food quality went significantly downhill when UK food prices in general went sky high, so I stopped shopping there.

I haven't seen anything online or on this thread that would tempt me back.

I didn't even see anything nice in the christmas stuff this year, not wrap or decorations or anything.

Cerseirys · 08/01/2016 23:35

That's what you'd think, but I'm a 5'9 size 12 and I still have to buy small in their sweaters and medium in tops.

ouryve · 08/01/2016 23:37

It's odd things like a baggy waist/tummy region combined with too tight legs

You've described me perfectly, there. Trousers fit is always going to be a lottery. As it is, I have a stack of reasonably priced jeans form there because they actually fit me, even if they might not fit you in that style. OTOH, I've put jeans back on the shelf which are too nipped in for my lack of waist, but they might just fit you perfectly.

HanSolo · 08/01/2016 23:38

Oh, and the exchange upthread with 'Bradley' says it all. We can contact our suppliers if there's a problem? No, M&S, your buyers are the problem! The suppliers just gave you what you ordered - Pure Ordure.

Destinysdaughter · 08/01/2016 23:42

How DO M&S get their food so right and their clothes so wrong? It's like shopping in 2 completely different shops!!

ouryve · 08/01/2016 23:47

And I stocked up on loads of pure cotton nightwear, this winter. I bought a load of these, which they had in deep purples and reds, at the time
www.marksandspencer.com/henley-neck-pyjama-top/p/p22435023
And a load of cotton flannelette bottoms. 2 in a red and purple check. The other pair a little less tasteful, but just as comfy! They've all washed well and have nice big pockets, so I can keep my phone and keys on me, while I wait for DS1's school transport.

I had to sift through loads of horrible stuff that stuck to my fingers like velcro, to find it all, mind.

ouryve · 09/01/2016 00:06

That leather shirt reminded me of these. DS2's been wearing a lurid lime green one in the rain, this week :o
