Ponchos - How do you style yours?

Following on from the other threads about them I was just curious about how you wear yours. I have one (plain dark tealy-blue), but I haven't worn it yet as I'm not sure which way to style it.

Firstly, are they a cosy extra layer for indoors or a substitute for a coat or jacket outside?

Do you wear a jumper under yours (i.e. another warm layer) or a light layer (e.g, a long sleeved t or shirt)?

Can they be worn over skirts or do they look best over jeans or trousers?

Would love to know which way you wear yours so I can copy you

I feel your pain, I bought this one from jigsaw last year & have worn it twice. I love it, but can't wear a coat over it, as its too chunky & looks daft. Without it's a bit draughty on a cold day!

I wore it over a black dress with tights & ankle boots the first time & a black long sleeved top & black skinny jeans the second. Uninspired? Yes.

I just don't know how to style it. Not much help I know.

I wear mine over a LS top or jumper, depending on how warm I want to be (mine's cashmere, so pretty toasty). I've found it most useful when it was dry but cool, when I could wear it outside (wore my cross shoulder bag underneath).

Roll neck top with long sleeves, skinny jeans and ballet pumps or knee high boots depending on rain.

Mine is lovely to look at but just a pain to wear; my arms feel cooped up and it irritates me while I'm driving, so I take it off and freeze to death, then pop it on around the shops and end up all hot and bothered and meat-sweaty. I'm not cut out for modern life.

I love how they look but find them super impractical. I mostly wear mine at home over a knit or tee with jeans. I found I could wear them outdoors when I lived in Italy but irl they are a bit cumbersome, I can only have a clutch bag.

I don't have a poncho, but have a wool cape which presents the same problems. I'm not sure I would be brave enough to wear it with anything other than skinnies and boots with long sleeved (and probably high necked) layers on top. They're probably not for the coldest days, more for cool but sunny days like carrie said. I particularly hate driving in mine!

I do like the "look" though so I've just bought this, which obviously isn't a poncho but I think gives the same "effect" and I should be able to wear it with a leather biker. It's a sort of cross between a poncho and a gilet, in that it's sleeveless. I have worn it every day since I got it (just sitting around the house as I've been ill) which is always a good sign!

Wear poncho with a long sleeved polo neck-over tight jeans or even 70's jeans-

If you are tall and slim, the 'bell bottom' jeans will look suoerb.

I wore my last poncho as maternity wear a number of years ago and because I had internal central heating (and it was even further into the winter than this) I didn't have to think too hard about what to wear underneath.

This time around (wearing a poncho, not pregnant) I am flummoxed. The winter weather has stepped up a notch where I am today and I don't know whether it will keep me warm enough. Equally I can't see myself wearing it as an extra layer at home (especially while cooking or washing up)!

Oh no - reading all your stories, it sounds like they are very impractical and I've just bought one!

I was planning to wear it over jeans/leggings. Or maybe mini-skirt, tights and boots. I live in London, so I am hoping that it will be warm enough some dry days to act as a coat!

I wouldn't do mini skirt, tights and boots. Too many pieces, like you are being dissected. One piece will make you stand out better. i,e jeans.

you cant wear when very cold imo. over a long sleeved tight top and skinnies

I ordered and returned Jigsaw one twice.
Just couldn't see how I would wear it day to day to make its £79 cost justifiable.

I have two very think chunky knit merino wool ones which I wear over jumpers as outerwear....when dry. I wear with jeans generally slim or skinny with boots.
I have a few much finer ones cashmere ones that I wear over long sleeve tees, again with jeans and boots. This is generally when it's milder but sometimes I add wrist warmers and scarf (carefully tied).
Then I have a fine black merino one with arm slits which I wear over smart trousers or pencil skirt and long sleeve top to the office.
I do love ponchos!

I have a wool cape. I find it handy for an extra layer of warmth over a blazer, where a coat would be bulky and uncomfortable. It's best with jeans, also ok with dresses and boots. I tried it with a denim skirt and it didn't work at all. I think there was just too much going on, it was all a bit busy.

I over my plum coloured jigsaw poncho, especially as I'm pregnant.
Where would you recommend for a cashmere poncho? I really fancy one for Christmas.

I've got 3 cashmere ponchos (one black, one blue and one dip dye grey/navy). I wear when it is cool and dry - normally with a long sleeved top underneath, cropped trousers, jeans pencil/maxi skirt on the bottom. I wear the, for the school run, out casually and over smart clothes on the way to work. I don't wear in the house as impractical to cook etc in.

I have a massive tweed cape thing - it is definitely outerwear! Elbow length gloves are good with it, and you need a cross-body bag as well. Shoulder bags absolutely don't work. I wear mine at this time of year when it's getting cold but is not yet snowing/minus figures.

I have the jigsaw one (thanks Brenda). I wear it as a coat but then I am always warm. I wore mine last week with skinny jeans, Chelsea boots, long sleeved top underneath and with a scarf and gloves (which I ended up taking off).

I also have one that it more of a blanket from new look. I tend to wear that with same outfit but either hanging off my shoulders like a shawl, or with one side flung over my opposite shoulder. That arm would get cold though!

I had one in the 70s with a Llama on that my aunt brought back from Peru.
I wore it over party dresses. Would I wear one now? No way.

I wear mine with leggings, knee high boots and just a long sleeved basic top underneath. Or over a sold colour dress and flats. Mine are too thin to be a substitute for a coat but I wear a long winter coat with them normally so you don't see them until I take my coat off and they're nice for in the house/office. The only time they're a pain is when I'm going things with my kids and bending over a lot to pick them up - it tends to get caught in things or trampled on by toddler feet...
