I am craving purple Dr Martens. Should I just consider it a hormonal episode and ride it out or embrace the need for clumpiness?

I am 40. I want patent spectra ones or cherry reds.

Do I need to have a word with myself?

Live in the moment and embrace it. We are all only getting older (sorry!) so do what you want and enjoy it!

I am 52 and possess both the most glorious pewter brogue pair and a new pair of ankle biker ones (on sale in the kids' range). And various other ones too.

DD1 (14) wears the black shoes for school. DD2 (12) has a fab blue patent pair of boots.

DriverSurpriseMe · 28/10/2015 18:17

I last bought DMs when I was 18.

Just bought some cherry reds for my 35th birthday Grin

Maybe I'm trying to relive my youth, but I'm actually not sure why I stopped wearing them.

WidowWadman · 28/10/2015 18:22

I had bright red patent ones, but where the patent cracked after a while of wear they were white underneath which looked a bit crap. Now I'm living in my DM Vondas (the ones with the embroidered roses). I'm 36 and don't think there's such a thing as "too old"

magicstar1 · 28/10/2015 18:26

I'm 40 and went in last week to buy a pair of the dark cherry red boots. Unfortunately the 7 were to big at the heel, and the 6 were too small across the arch. I was sick.

I do wear a pair of New Rocks with red demons on the front lol.

CoconutAmericano · 28/10/2015 18:46

I've been toying with getting a pair of docs for years but i have such sensitive feet I think the breaking in period would finish them off.

However, I could be swayed by these Grin

I have had my pair for four years this Christmas, regularly wear them and they are still my favourite shoes! I'm thinking cherry red next time! Embrace the DMs!!!!!

ravenAK · 28/10/2015 18:55

They never do the pretty ones in a size 9 Sad

PersonalClown · 28/10/2015 19:43

Coconut- Blister plasters, fabric/plaster padding on heels and 2 pairs of socks for the breaking in period.

Start with about half hour a day then go up to as long as you can bear.

I have (used to) very sensitive feet.

NannyOggsHedgehogs · 28/10/2015 19:59

I still wear my 21yo cherry reds. I've also just bought myself an early Christmas present of the ones with embroidered roses on. I'm pairing them with thick black leggings, stretchy mini skirts, boring breastfeeding tops and a 2 month old in a sling...

custardcreamdreams · 28/10/2015 20:22

Late 30s and I have two pairs on the go atm - brick red and brown boots. Have eyed up the purple ones several times lately when I've walked past the shop.

My podiatrist, very fussy man who would berate you for incorrect footwear gave my DMs the thumbs up. Not his preferred trainers but knows the weather isn't great for trainers all the time so DMs tick a lot of the right boxes.

They are lovely Coconut, go for it!

madwomanbackintheattic · 28/10/2015 20:26

44 and patent blue here. Dh asked if I was having a mid life crisis. He appears to have forgotten that I lived in them when we met. I am returning to my roots.

Auntpodder · 28/10/2015 20:30

DM used to do the most brilliant ballerina flats - Christina - with the proper DM stitching and Airwair sole. Dunno why they stopped - even used ones go for a fortune on ebay these days. goes off to stamp around in DM deprivation fury Even had a white pair for when I was being a lay-dee.

Oh and I just bought a bunch of Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 shirts from Uniqlo which I'd wear with my DMs (I have black, cherry, floral, black 16 holes, mary janes, the one that looks like a school uniform, etc) . 90s much?

exexpat · 28/10/2015 21:42

Just bought green metallic DM shoes. I'm 47, and bought my last pair about 25 years ago, but 13yo DD has recently acquired two pairs (black patent shoes for school, and purple metallic boots for out of school) so I was envious...

CoconutAmericano · 28/10/2015 21:47

Loving the mother and daughter doc lovers! My two are wearing cheaper rip offs. But they are so cool the real ones could only look better. Surely the real kids ones dont need breaking in?

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 29/10/2015 00:17

I bought the 12 hole Triumph boots today ( with the flower lining and ribbons instead of laces). I'm 56.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 29/10/2015 00:20

Forgot to say - I also have purple doc (10 yrs old, so comfy now!).

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 29/10/2015 00:22

I think I am going to have to get some DMs. Those purple ones are breathtakingly gorgeous. And Louise's above are gorgeous too.

Time to start saving!

barkingfly · 29/10/2015 04:44

Please tell me what to do? I wear a 5 1/2, so a 6 is way too big. Why don't they make half sizes?

Mrsm49 · 29/10/2015 06:48

I am 65 and have 4 pairs - cherry red patent, black floral, metallic purple and plain black. Go for it, you are never too old!

BeaBoo · 29/10/2015 07:33

Barking it baffles me that they don't do half sizes. Ideally I need a 5.5, as the 5 were too small but 6 too big. I had to get the 6 and wear 2 pairs of socks with them.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 29/10/2015 09:18

YY to someone's theory that it is your feet that need breaking in, not the DMs! I had a pair of 1460s a couple of year ago (black) and they took several weeks with extra thick socks and the occasional plaster. can now wear these with tights for a whole day. Very comfy.

Got another pair (red) a few weeks back and, although a little stiff the first time I wore them, are now fine and no thick socks needed.

Late forties, BTW.

Hobbes8 · 29/10/2015 09:23

How do the little kids ones fare in terms of breaking in? I'd like to get some for my toddler and perhaps my 4 year old, but I'm not a fan of putting my children through crippling agony.
