I am craving purple Dr Martens. Should I just consider it a hormonal episode and ride it out or embrace the need for clumpiness?

I am 40. I want patent spectra ones or cherry reds.

Do I need to have a word with myself?

Don't buy new ones..... Go on eBay instead because docs looks so much better worn in. I got my purples a couple of years ago. 15 quid. They look like I dug them out of the loft.

Doubting · 27/10/2015 21:10

I have patent purple ones as does my 4 year old! I am 35

echt · 28/10/2015 06:21

I'm over 60 and have a fine selection of DM sandals, slip-ons and lace up boots and shoes.

Don't let put you off.:o

< After years of dissing my footwear as uncool, DD has finally cottoned and is trying to pinch mine>

MuttonCadet · 28/10/2015 06:25

If they go with your usual style definitely go for it, I love the purple ones you linked to, but wouldn't go with my wardrobe.

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2015 06:36

I have Cheery red and brown I'm 45 next week. I have just bought DS (4) patent cherry red ones. I'm hoping to develop her footwear taste Dominican borrow her shoes in 10 years time.

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2015 06:36

*cherry, not cheery, but I rather like the typo.

BikeRunSki · 28/10/2015 06:37

*no idea why "Dominican" is in there.

mayum1 · 28/10/2015 06:41

Get it! I have a collection and I'm 37!

We can always blame it on 90s nostalgia... ;)

kelper · 28/10/2015 06:47

I have some purple ones, I love them but they don't love me :( they took against me after a few months of wearing and now they destroy my feet after about 15 minutes of wearing. I can't justify getting rid of them or buying new ones but they are a beautiful cadburys purple :)

Annarose2014 · 28/10/2015 12:12

Shit PersonalClown, why did you have to link to those tattoo ones! They are FAB.

I used to live in DM Chelsea boots for years. Why did I ever stop??

But tell me folks, are they still horrendous to break in? I vividly remembering bringing heel plasters around with me for days when I bought a new pair.

mayum1 · 28/10/2015 12:14

Annarose2014 - yes, they still kill my feet during break-in period.

PersonalClown · 28/10/2015 12:18

They are beautiful, aren't they?
I've noticed that I have large patches of blister shaped hard skin on my heels from breaking in DMs and Converse.

I find it where the tongue is sewn in is worse for me now. 2 pairs of socks and about 3 months indoors before I can think about outside.

HelenF35 · 28/10/2015 12:23

They are amazing, buy them at once!

slug · 28/10/2015 12:36

Well, I'm 50 and love my pair of DM boots. I have these which required no breaking in at all.

TeamBacon · 28/10/2015 13:18

I found this site recently after a LOT of googling, looks like it's fairly reasonably priced. The ones I wanted were £110 in Schuh, but £71 on here!

They've been delivered today GrinGrinGrin

TeamBacon · 28/10/2015 13:19

Hmm. Would help if I linked the site, wouldn't it!

Um, I think I love you TeamBacon

TeamBacon · 28/10/2015 13:37
Grin

Wait until I get home and check the actual boots, I'll check back in and reassure that they're not shit knock offs. Couldn't believe how cheap they were!

CreviceImp · 28/10/2015 17:10

In terms of breaking them in I have read that the pascal ones are easier owing to the leather used and that they fit a bit narrower too. The ones called buttero are also a Brucie bonus in this regard.

Will report back Grin

Apparently you can buy special DM socks for the epic breaking in period with a padded heel....

Thanks for the encouragement by the way you most splendid of folk Wine

Well, that site is legit, boots absolutely fine, and soo comfortable (fur lined ones, woo)

musicposy · 28/10/2015 17:40

Yay, definitely report back! I spent my uni life in a pair of the standard black DM shoes - they were the best footwear I ever owned. Not sure where they went. However, I now have these and I utterly adore them but they're quite hot except in mid winter.

I think I need an alternative pair now. Just need an excuse to justify the expense!

BeaBoo · 28/10/2015 17:51

I've recently bought some DM Chelsea boots and now I'm totally converted. I've got a big shopping list that I'll never be able to afford.

My 22 month old DD wears patent red docs Smile

I am craving purple Dr Martens. Should I just consider it a hormonal episode and ride it out or embrace the need for clumpiness?
musicposy · 28/10/2015 17:53

I found my fur lined ones took almost no breaking in but they only did them in cream, brown or pink and I'd like to go to something a bit edgier now.
DD2 has these which are basically wellingtons. Once on you can't tell the difference unless you look closely and she wears them to school most days (sixth form) so they must be fairly comfy. She's veggie so likes the non-leather aspect. I think they must be a bit sweaty on the feet but she says they're fine. However, one thing I do hate in the winter is wet feet so from that aspect alone they have to be just about the most practical shoes ever!

I'm 48, by the way, and plan on never being too old for DMs! What could be more sensible footwear as an old lady Grin

Archfarchnad · 28/10/2015 18:03

I've got classic 8-hole purple DMs, they're my pride and joy. I'm not a big fan of patent leather though.

Re breaking in: I swear the DMs don't adjust to fit your feet, the feet change to fit the boots instead.

teejayem · 28/10/2015 18:04

DH always comments that I still dress like it's 1995. Between the old converse and the flannel, I own six seven pairs of docs bought over the last 10 years, I rotate them so they all wear down equally. Latest purchase; a pair of pewter corset lace ups which I got on eBay, they arrived yesterday and I luffs them. Almost as much as the Agnes deyn special edition ones I got in the sale in Schuh with a platform sole.
My excuse is that I don't wear heels ever because my back is shot to bits, so it's okay to have a selection of dms in every colour. I find the patent ones and the taller lace ups are the worst for rubbing when you break them in. I use surgical spirit and one pair of normal socks with a pair of primark slipper socks over the top, usually does the trick.
