What top with this skirt for wedding - need to decide if to keep or return?

Hi
I have just bought this skirt to wear at my DSDs wedding next year. I absolutely adore it, but I am struggling to know what top to wear? I am absolutely useless at buying tops and the skirt is really expensive, so I need to be sure it's worth having.
I would normally wear a dress due to said top uselessness, but if anyone can help me find something, I'd be very grateful. I did wonder about a silk shirt, but hate all that bunching up around the waist. The skirt has lace and is made of silk, so very delicate.
I need to make a decision relatively soon so I can return the skirt if I can't get the right top
Any ideas?

This is beautiful. I wouldn't think it too white for a guest to wear to a wedding but some brides aren't as easy going as I am

Just send it back - it's really not suitable for any wedding, let alone the fact it doesn't remotely look worth the money - and choose a lovely dress.

Another skirt/ top dress which I rather like

Original price £2500!!

I'm reaching for the smelling salts.

I agree with previous posters that a dress would work better. The skirt is just too fussy for me.

Dowser · 10/10/2015 21:32

I hope I haven't insulted OP's sense of fashion with my own but I've enjoyed having a trawl through dresses i would never spend so much money on lovely as some of them are ;-)

SouthWestmom · 10/10/2015 21:39

Op, to me both choices (although I totally love the black dress) look a teensy bit 'Raquel Welch attending her son's wedding.' I imagine you are trying to avoid mother of the bride type outfits but I'd probably go a bit longer and a bit less exciting just to be safe.

polyhymnia · 10/10/2015 21:41

Very well put.

Hi
Sorry, I thought the thread had died so hadn't looked again!
Dowser, you are an absolute star - thanks so much for all your hard work here. You have got my style nailed - I have been on matches and loved the Preen Avery dress, but they don't have my size. I l also loved the Christopher Kane one, but perhaps a bit too casual for the wedding. I do want to avoid anything too white, as it will be a formal do and I don't want to risk any possibility of upsettting the bride. I do love Roksanda, but DH thinks it is a bit bonkers colourwise. I'm avoiding Vivienne Westwood as we only recently got married, after a very long time together Smile, and I wore a short Westwood dress, just THE best dress ever, so I want something different for this.
Noeuf, in a way, yes, I definitely don't want MOB outfits, but appreciate I may be going too far the other way! I think the Paul Smith black one may be too short, although I may just keep it for me regardless Smile. I guess I just want elegant, stylish, a bit quirky but still me!
Thanks for all the comments about the skirt, by the way - it is definitely going back.
If it helps, I'm 5'9, 10-12 and late forties, biggish bust, slightly lacking in a waist but good legs!

the skirt is vile

send it back

Dowser · 10/10/2015 22:53

Thank you

( blushes furiously )

There were some stunning black dresses and white ones too but I gathered that you didn't want those.

Any colour preferences? I glossed over some really elegant but more formal ie sheath dress style as I felt you liked a bit more quirky
Keep us updated won't you ;-)

cashmerecardigans · 10/10/2015 23:14

You're welcome Smile
You're right to gloss over the more formal.elegant ones. I definitely want some thing a bit more interesting/unusual/less obvious. I am fair and pale so pinks/pale blues work well for me. Rightly or wrongly I wear quite a bit of black. I love lace and tulle and really like dressses where there is a bit of lace or tulle/net beyond the body of the dress, if that makes sense.
I do have a while to look, as it's not until next year, so lots of time to keep looking.

Omg. That silver asymmetric Vivienne Westwood dress!!! I love it!! I'll be 50 in January!!!! But it's calling to me!!! Then again......when do I ever go anywhere I'd wear it! Separated.....from the stbxh who would make the ones on "relationships" look like the perfect man! Mum to 21/18 year olds. Oldest teacher in my school??? And the dog loves me regardless of what I wear!!!! Nope. It's for someone else I think. Though I'd.LOVE to see the pics!!!
