Generally are trainers cheaper in NYC?

Because I need some decent footwear but I'm conscious of how much trainers are these days. I don't go to the gym but I walk a lot and in NYC I am planning on walking everywhere but I still need to look alright to go into a bar after all that walking. Should I wait until I get there or should I potentially pay more money but buy them now and start breaking them in?

Yup, still have AE :) I do love Old Navy and get the bulk of my kid's clothes there or Target (I eBay Gap, mini Boden, Janie and Jack, and Gymboree) but like you said it depends on what you're looking for. I do have a few Old Navy tshirts that I just realized are quite old and I'm still wearing them.

Thanks for that I knew some of it was good quality!!! I've already googled and there's a Target in Brooklyn. I've never ever been to a Target and it does really excite me!!!

Target is alright but the quality isn't great. I love their yoga pants but at $40 a pair they are cheaper on sale at better stores.

Target has good kids stuff. They have a line by Osh kosh which is amazing and much cheaper than the real thing. Also it's a good place to pick up Essie and OPI nail varnish. I've got it for as little as $6 a bottle.

Janie and Jack looks lovely. Very similar to classic a Ralph Lauren would you say? Do they have sales?

I've gotten some J&J on clearance from their website. I've only been in store once, at the Mall of America :) They are expensive (to me, anyway) but hold up well. I usually eBay their clothing for the kids to wear for photos or to church.

I adore Target! It's amazing. As Supermum said the quality of the adult clothing isn't great, but I do like a lot of their kid's clothing. And I love the home section! It is absolute heaven to me to buy a Starbucks at Target and then slowly peruse the aisles :o

Mostly the younger kid's things in Target, actually. I get a lot of things for toddler DD and baby DS there but rarely do I find much for my 8 year old DS. He does like their jeans.

Oh the homeware section of target! cheerful I do the same darn thing. I also love the container store.

For higher end cosmetics I have found cosmetic market on 15 E 37th St to be excellent. They don't have the full range but they do have a lot. Perfumes are great prices here but you have to know what you want as so samples. Also you MUST check the register as they ring everything up. It's 50c here and dollar there extra and a double charge once. Really annoyed me but their prices are so good. If they give you a hard time tell them you are calling 311 to report them. Don't let this out you off though. It's where I get a lot of stocking gifts for my friends.

each I have no idea what candy you could possibly want from here! I find it all terrible. I really miss the sweeties in the UK.

Ok, just looked at the Janine & Jack website and I'm in love. But there's no shop in New York??

There is a location by hunter college. It's on 3rd Ave up by 67th and 68th St. I was up there last week and saw it.

Ooh cardy, that's good to know! Were they on special, or was that just the usual price that was way cheaper?

We leave on the 30thSad

I am just trying to sort some sort of itinerary, but Google maps isn't doing it for me. I think I need a book....

Google maps just takes some getting used to. We are doing a couple of free walking tours www.freetoursbyfoot.com/new-york-tours/ and a full nine hour bus tour on our first day there! It will tick all the boxes for those of us that have never been www.viator.com/tours/New-York-City/New-York-City-Guided-Sightseeing-Tour-by-Luxury-Coach/d687-2625MC. I've organised our itinerary but am keeping it pretty loose.

Ooh that walking tour link looks good, E&E!
I am toying with booking a 48hour pass as it's so cheap and lots of good reviews, but not exactly sure which days to do it!

Yes we are doing the Greenwich food tour and the Brooklyn Hights one.

Our bus tour includes some passes, I might try and get tickets to the Woolworth Lobby. I know my friends won't be interested but our hotel isn't far from there.

We were there for the Halloween parade last year. Good fun but it got very crowded. There was a bit of a slightly panicky crowd-surge where we were standing with lots of New Yorkers shouting about how ashamed they were. It wasn't that bad but a few people near us had clocked that we were from the UK and that our youngest was pretty frightened so we got a few "Sorry about this" comments and looks. Don't let that put you off - I think we were just standing on a particularly awkward corner.

Yes I have no idea where to stand. I need to investigate more.

I wouldn't bring young kids (under the age of 12) to the Halloween parade downtown. There are others earlier in the day or on Friday which are also great fun without the huge crowds.

Previously I've found Clinique and Estée lauder to be significantly cheaper compared to the UK and Denmark. I've never liked maybelline after trying it once and finding it horrible. For mascara the everyday wear from Clinique isn't bad but I've always found max factor to be the best.
