Generally are trainers cheaper in NYC?

Because I need some decent footwear but I'm conscious of how much trainers are these days. I don't go to the gym but I walk a lot and in NYC I am planning on walking everywhere but I still need to look alright to go into a bar after all that walking. Should I wait until I get there or should I potentially pay more money but buy them now and start breaking them in?

Colombus Circle is the smaller one I prefer

Hello, this seems to be the "I'm going to NY in October" thread. I'm going over just before Halloween and will be hitting Pottery Barn Kids and hoping they have their Christmas stocking in. That's the main thing I want!

I'm going to be wearing black Adidas 'sneakers' with fluro pink laces. Not worried about going out as 2 year old DD will be with us. We're going over to see DHs bro so DH can go out with him and I'll chill in the hotel.

Want2bSupermum · 30/09/2015 10:49

The century 21 shop by the WTC is very quiet in the mornings before 9. It's the best time to shop there.

I only buy perfume by Chanel from sephora. I buy my make up at places like century 21 or outlets.

bigTillyMint · 30/09/2015 10:59

I am going with DD who is 16 - before 9 might be a challenge!

We won't be aiming for fancy places to eat /drink - I can't wait to try some dinersBlush should be all right in trainers there!

WhenTheDragonsCame · 30/09/2015 11:32

Bigtillymint if you like musicals and singing try Ellas stardust diner. The waiting staff take it in turn to get up and sing, they were brilliant! They do regularly ask for donations for dance lesson but you don't have to give if you don't want to. The food was nice as well.

Want2bSupermum · 30/09/2015 12:28

Unless you are going to a top restaurant no one cares what you are wearing. In New York money talks bullshit walks. Concern about clothing falls into the bullshit category.

bigTillyMint · 30/09/2015 13:08

Yes, I've heard about that place - will look it up and see, thanks!

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 18:18

Yeah we are going last week of October also!! Where is Pottery Barn? I've never seen it. I need to get some Ralph Lauren polo shirts for my toddler nephew as my sister says they wash well and I thought about that children's shop Carters? Anyone going to any shows?

OP posts:
EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 18:19

Ps I have googled the menu for a place called pies n thighs. Just do it.

spub · 30/09/2015 18:25

Each, I am going 2 weeks today!
Carters is good for kids clothes and IIRC is pretty good value. GAP also cheap there and big dept stores have concessions. Cons and vans cheap as are Levi's. Bought several of all of those in USA last year. The Levi's are such good quality and wore well til ds outgrew them.
I love shopping in the USA and can't wait to hit the nyc shops Grin

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 18:35

Have you signed up to any shops newsletters? I know that old navy and gap send you a voucher straight away for 20% off

BigTilly - there's a Century 21 on the Upper West Side as well so, depending on where you're staying, it might be easier. And the jetlag works in your favour for getting up early (for the first few days, at least)

Went last October and was underwhelmed at the prices tbh. I don't get very excited by shopping but my eldest was looking for trainers and Vans so I did see quite a lot.

bigTillyMint · 30/09/2015 19:11

We are going the last week or so of October tooSmile

Good tip on the OldNavy/Gap - I guess that's the US website?

Thanks Swedish! We are staying a block west of Times Square, I think. We are only there 4 1/2 days, so maybe it will be early mornings all the way.

I am looking at Converse as well as any other trainers sneakers and Levis.

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 19:14

Yes it's the us site. I don't like the massive Old Navy but there's a really nice smaller one near Union Square I think. That whole area is lovely.

Small print says not on Uggs but I walked out of the store and they came after me Grin
I have sent everyone I know there lol, should.be on commission

Generally are trainers cheaper in NYC?
QOD · 30/09/2015 19:44

Oh and the diner is The BEST ' traditional grits n corn beef hash etc

Want2bSupermum · 30/09/2015 20:25

Century 21 downtown is their best location. The location on the UWS is not great.

If you have young kids I would suggest you go down to the basement in the downtown location and pick up discounted souvenirs.

Tilly when I was 16 I would have been out of bed in a shot if my parents were taking me to century 21!

Want2bSupermum · 30/09/2015 20:27

Old navy is awful quality. You might as well buy from Primark.

For good tshirts I really like american apparel. Be careful with Levi jeans. Not all are great quality. Buy kids clothes at century 21. I get my kids clothes 2nd hand but if I buy something new this is where I get it from nearly everytime. Other good spot for kids clothes is Burlington coat factory.

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 20:51

We love Old Navy pajamas and men's proper old school underwear and thermals and their NYC t shirts. I never knock it. My brother works out doors and always sends me their. He also likes the thermals from century 21.

I keep reading about SJP's shies anyone got any experience?

bigTillyMint · 30/09/2015 21:21

Great tips - thanks to allSmile

Sorry for butting into your thread EandE, but hopefully it's all useful for you too?

I don't have small kids - both are teens! I will tell DD what you said about getting out of bed like a shot to go to Century 21Wink

SwedishEdith · 30/09/2015 21:26

The UWS C21 wasn't huge but we stumbled on it by accident. My youngest got some DKNY black skinny jeans for $10 so she was very happy.

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 21:31

I just wonder if it's better than tk max as I noticed the same missoni scarves in there as the ones here.

Don't forget Holister Is miles cheaper for the dc

OP posts:
Want2bSupermum · 30/09/2015 21:55

Monolos are SJP shoes and the equivalent shoe is now the red soles. Quite frankly they are all over priced. Go take a look at the C21 shoe department and you will find just as nice shoes for $100 and lower.

I have not been impressed with anything from old navy. The PJs I got for my kids were thin and scratchy. I took them back and got ones from gap and Jack & Janie. For young kids def go to J&J. It is awesome quality.

Also if anyone is coming over pregnant do think of buying a stroller here. They are so much cheaper and you can go pick them up from buybuybaby in Chelsea.

CheerfulYank · 30/09/2015 22:20

Old Navy's quality used to be much better. We had a red zip up hoodie with a quilted lining that went through six kids in ten years and still looked great. The newer stuff isn't nearly as good (the jeans are okay) but I still buy it for my kids as they are growing like weeds anyway. But I live in America; I don't know that I'd waste precious suitcase space on it :)

EachandEveryone · 30/09/2015 23:27

I'll just stick to the underpants then. All my gbf's make a beeline for it that and Kiehls. I never see Kiehls as being cheaper I think it's overpriced anyway.

Ps the waffle tops in old navy two years ago wash like a dream. I really think it friends what you are looking for and what branch you go to. The vintage printed t shirts are great also my teenage nieces love them. Is American Eagle still around? They like that too.
