Converse alternatives?

Yarpyarp · 09/09/2015 10:49

I'm nearly 40 and after all these years, I am still pretty dreadful at furnishing my feet.

I have converse from a few years ago but I look scruffy in them now and need to move on! I'm looking for something understated but a bit trendy, so it appears I know what I'm doing fashion wise!

Can anyone suggest any alternatives? I don't know whether to maybe just get some actual trainers instead? - I see people in skinny jeans, leggings with trainers (not converse) all the time and they look effortlessly cool, but that could be because they are half my age!

I'm in need of fashionable comfort - can anyone help please??!

I've just started a post asking for opinions on these as I'm also looking for converse alternatives!!

skinnyamericano · 09/09/2015 11:22

I love Supergas instead of converse. Fab choice of colours and fit much better IMO.

TimeToMuskUp · 09/09/2015 11:24

Superga and Vans are my school-run shoes of choice. Vans do Disney ones for adults, too, which had me at hello.

jorahmormont · 09/09/2015 11:26

I love Vans. Alternatively, have you seen the Converse Star Player? I'm currently lusting after a pair, they're gorgeous :)

I think brogues or cool runners work perfectly on any age! Asos have great sales on sneakers if you want to have s look around. My brogues are brown & orthopedic but look awesome; no one needs to know how comfy they are ;)

I just got some Superdry Low Pro canvas shoes and love them - they feel a bit more trendy than Converse (although what do I know...)

Yarpyarp · 09/09/2015 13:48

Thanks for suggestions.. I do like the brogues but i think they'd work better on me with a slightly smarter outfit than my usual casual.

So superga/vans it is....Are there any colours that are a no-go? My default is black/grey but I did have a pair of silver trainers once when I was trying to be cool (early thirties), I'm sure people pointed and laughed!

I don't find converse comfortable so always wear Vans and also have a pair of Supergas. I find the Supergas very heavy compared to the Vans but they are comfy.

If you're after Vans it's worth looking in TK Maxx as my local ones have had loads in recently. I got a lovely leather snake print pair for £20, and also some rose gold ones. I tend to buy plain navy blue as my default.

I've just ordered some Ash Virgin hi tops as a converse alternative, leather so better for winter!

KanyesVest · 09/09/2015 16:54

Oh, I was very tentatively looking at a pair of bronze leather vans for the winter to replace the silver glitter converse knock offs I've lived in for the summer. Would leather vans see me through the winter?

yazzy85 · 09/09/2015 19:53

These ecco ones are very comfortable and a lovely leather material too.

How about something like this?Ugg

Aroundamulberry · 09/09/2015 21:44

I wear trainers if I'm walking a lot that day and converse if not so much.

As much as I try to get away from converse along with everyone else, we all seem to go back to them.

I just got a new pair and have noticed loads of mums on the school run wearing new ones too, which makes me feel better.

GrimDamnFanjo · 09/09/2015 22:49

Grok where did you get those lush brogues from?

NotYouNaanBread · 10/09/2015 14:06

Ash trainers. They're like Converse for grown-up & soooo comfy.

ExConstance · 10/09/2015 14:13

Another vote for ECCO they have really upped their game style wise.
Soft 7 very nice

oobedobe · 10/09/2015 18:32

I recently got these slip-on Vans as a change from converse and I am loving them

I was lusting after the bronze ones but couldn't find them for sale anywhere.

Bunbaker · 10/09/2015 18:36

Those Ecco ones look great. I can't get on with Converse. They are too flat and unsupportive. I know it is fashionable to sneer at Sketchers on mumsnet, but once you have tried Sketchers Go Walk anything else just feels so uncomfortable. Walking in them feels like walking on cushions.

AppleSnapple · 10/09/2015 18:39

I have a pair of ash ones, they're a bit wider than converse, more sedate and subtle, I like to tell myself at least! Super comfy. Have also not long bought myself a lovely flat pair of desert boots that are really low and go nicely with skinnies, in a casual sense.

Aroundamulberry · 10/09/2015 18:40

I really like Nike free but not fond of the price £££

burnishedsilver · 10/09/2015 18:41

I love the ASH ones but the ribber sole wore down quite quickly. I'm thinking of trying leather converse.

Lemonfizzypop · 10/09/2015 18:43

I got some puma suedes recently as I couldn't face another pair of converse, I love them!

burnishedsilver · 10/09/2015 18:56

Rubber sole, not ribber.
