Does anyone else have any same-factory/producer tips?

OP posts:

But it doesn't make a difference if they are made in the same factory because you can read the ingredients and there is no difference
The main one might be amount of pigment

paperbattles · 15/02/2017 15:49

So it seems ultimately there is little or no difference. I am waiting for some expert to come along and post that a particular brand is far better quality than the others, and is very different; And is great value considering its quality. I think I might be waiting a while.

My favourite foundation is YSL - I've always been resistant to the idea of fashion houses creating skincare and makeup, but this is lovely and doesn't slide off my face in the same way that No7 does. It's lighter than DoubleWear.

I also have a Bobbi Brown palette and one of the colours has a film over it. I always wondered what had happened - now I know!

PollyPerky · 15/02/2017 16:07

well, it's pretty obvious that if you buy a high end brand you are paying for glossy full page ads in magazines etc. You are also paying for floor space in a dept store, the assts salaries and more expensive packaging.
But you also get a wider product range- so with Bobbi Brown you get 24 shades in one foundation whereas with L'Oreal True Match you might get 6 or 8.

On the whole I don't think cost provides much benefit for things like lippy- a £5 Rimmel lippy is not better than a £25 Chanel. You get a nicer package but that's it.

Sali Hughes suggests paying a decent amount for foundation - which I do - around £35 - but I am happy to buy cheaper lippies and eye shadow if I find anything I like. Having said that I've wasted £££s on cheapo mascara - many recommended here- and they were useless so have stuck with Lancome at £25.

Can somebody point me to the thread about the vans leaving the factory as referred by the OP please? I have searched but can't see it

FrustratedFrugal · 15/02/2017 16:30

I use a cushion compact foundation and midprice Max Factor is just as good as a premium brand, Sensai

This podcast explains how Dermalogica brand founder came up with her products. Basically, many famous products are professionally (and cheaply) formulated by anonymous cosmetic chemists and the rest is branding, packaging and marketing.

And of course, if you are paying for a premium brand, you might get fancy stuff like blue orchid oil and the essence of camelia petals. The cosmetic chemist will add blue dye and a few micrograms of orchid extract or dried camelia leaves and everyone is happy. A lot of it is smoke and mirrors.

It doesn't matter about the vans and the factory... If a factory makes makeup, then that is what it does. It will make make up for anyone that asks it to, or for all the brands in a group or whatever. However, each client brand will ask the factory to make things to a different specification. The ingredient list may be similar or even identical, but there can be wildly different proportions of those ingredients, and they can even be sourced from different places.

It is like McVities Chocolate biscuits and eg Asda own-label chocolate biscuits. They are made in the same factory, and both contain flour, sugar fat, and chocolate and are made in exactly the same mixers and ovens . But the McVities biscuit may have less sugar, more butter oil than palm oil, more cocoa butter/cocoa solids in the chocolate and more chocolate in the biscuit. Both will leave the factory in the same vans...

Oh there's a whole load of perception going on... from the woman in the uniform who applies the lippy for you to try, to the posh counter, to the freebies they pop in the bag, the nice OTT packaging of a product (box for a lipstick) and the quality of the containers. It's about the experience and don't they know it.

I do use high end stuff- not Chanel though- and do so because they have more choice of shades. So B Brown has zillions of eye shadows to choose from, not just a few like Rimmel.

And you know the item you buy has not been tested on 10 teenagers' hands then put back in the stand. There are still too many cheap items where the packaging is not tamper proof so anything you buy may have been swiped on someone's hands first.

GayParee · 15/02/2017 21:21

@HoHumming I live near the Bourjois factory and have seen Chanel vans leaving. You can tell the foundations are nigh on identical, am waiting for Bourjois to launch a long lasting matte one now Chanel has brought out the tenue one

BusterGonad · 15/02/2017 21:22

I like pigmented makeup and lipstick that feels secure on and won't slide down my face, I don't really get that with cheap brands. L'Oréal eyeshadow is completely useless, Chanel eyeshadows are great but you do need to have skill to get a good results, they need someone who is good at blended and knows about application. They aren't always buttery soft, but saying that they last and look amazing. I don't normally wear them day to day as I've not always got time to achieve the result I'm after so I wear cheaper less pigmented brands to work etc but nothing is nicer than well applied Chanel eyeshadows. They are striking and worth the £££

FrustratedFrugal · 15/02/2017 21:38

Buster do you have Euro formula baked Chanel eye shadows (round pans) or US formula Chanel (square pans)?

BusterGonad · 16/02/2017 06:22

I have the round pans, except in special edition palettes.
