Does anyone else have any same-factory/producer tips?

I find Chanel eye shadow useless (from new, so not anything I'm doing), so hard to get pigment. Ditto their nail varnish.

However, if anyone can tell me a cheap identical version of their Hydra moisturisers, I'll be there in a flash. Suits my skin so well, and because I enjoy it, I use it. Have tried cheaper well recommended brands, but just don't use them.

Tollygunge · 14/02/2017 10:14

Haven't read the thread but I've always found L'Oréal and kerastase similar and according to hairdresser made by same people

BusterGonad · 14/02/2017 11:46

Fenella they are powder, germs don't really breed on powder so I'm fine with it. Mascara replaced regularly and pencils sharpened. If I was worried I'd scrape the top layer of the shadows of to reveal new clean powder.

Ladybirdbookworm · 14/02/2017 13:25

Yes Buster I watched Sali Hughes on YouTube and she said eyeshadow can be kept for years

LoupGarou · 14/02/2017 13:53

Buster yes I used to keep it in the bathroom, it's in my dressing room now though as DH got fed up of opening the cupboard door and it all falling out on him Grin

BusterGonad · 14/02/2017 14:26

Loup maybe the steam kind of made it hard. I love my Chanel, I have about 6 eyeshadow palettes and one blush. My friend gave me one of her sample sales blushers, it was as hard as nails! That's the only one that's ever got ruined and not by my hand! 😂

LoupGarou · 14/02/2017 14:35

I did wonder about that Buster DH is crap at putting the fan on when he has a shower so the rooms turns into a sauna. I haven't had as much of an issue since I moved it out of the bathroom. I love Chanel too, I especially love their skincare. I love nice makeup but am a bit too tight to buy it anymore so have dedicated myself to testing dupes Grin.

LoupGarou · 14/02/2017 14:36

Meant to also add one of my most smug moments recently was rewiring the fan so that it comes on automatically when the bathroom light turns on Grin. Apparently I am ruining DH's zen shower experience Grin.

I bought a new Lancôme lipstick today because I really loved the colour and it smells just like the L'Oréal ones, identical.

Ellapaella · 14/02/2017 18:40

My friends husband used to work for Lancôme as a chemical engineer. He said fundamentally the products are basically the same - you pay more for the high end packaging with Lancôme.

Ellapaella · 14/02/2017 18:40

Although that was a long time ago so it may have changed.

AutumnalLeafs · 14/02/2017 19:15

Won't be able to explain this properly but a beautician told me that you should never buy nail varnish from general makeup house brands (like Chanel, Dior etc) and should only buy specific nail varnish brands (like Essie).

It's something to with the way they are made. Apparently the make up house brands are more gloopy so don't go on as well, take longer to dry, chip more and don' t last as well.

violetgrey · 14/02/2017 19:17

@buster Chanel used to own Bourjois. See the first paragraph of the interview by the ex PR I mentioned earlier.

I like Elizabeth Arden- I get it cheaply in the Pound Shop near my mother's house. Their 'Good Night's Sleep' night cream is lovely.

Pearlmum1 · 14/02/2017 19:35

The grease layer happens if you don't use a clean brush every time or if you use your fingers, there are oils in our finger tips that can ruin your makeup and a brush that's already been used will have oils from your eyelids/face etc. Cleaning brushes is not fun but they and your products will last so much longer and look so much better for it. I love collection 2000 liquid eyeliners, I work for a makeup brand and this is the one all the consultants use and it's £2.50 in boots!

FrustratedFrugal · 14/02/2017 19:55

The Wertheimers (parent company of Chanel) sold Bourjois to Coty in 2014 or 2015. Many pre-2014 products are identical and it could still be that they use the same factories.

I have a lot of Chanel makeup: the blushes go hard, baked eye shadows are light on pigment, but I like their lipstick. Regarding quality, budget/midprice brands such as Kiko, Artdeco and Max Factor are just as good.

FrustratedFrugal · 14/02/2017 19:58

The greasy layer thing is something that tends to happen to Chanel and Bourjois blushes. I have several other blushes ranging from dimestore makeup to Nars and they don't harden at all

violetgrey · 14/02/2017 20:26

I like Chanel lipstick too @FrustratedFrugal. Just discovered Kiko eye shadows and really like them.

SapphireSeptember · 14/02/2017 20:55

I don't know if this is true or not, but I've been told Gosh cosmetics are made in the same factory as Bobbi Brown. If anyone can confirm or deny that it will be wonderful, because it's been bugging me for ages!

Bourjous nail polishes are pretty good, the ones with the tall lids dry seriously fast and last quite a long time.

Kennington · 14/02/2017 21:59

The ingredients are all the bloody same. I have a les beiges powder. First ingredient is talc. Cheap.
A few tweaks here or there particularly in terms of colour.

Housewife2010 · 15/02/2017 14:49

Pearlmum, I wash my brushes every one to two weeks, but it is not practical to wash my powder brush every day. It is Mac and was expensive and I'm sure that daily washing wouldn't do it any good. I doubt that it would always dry in time too. The Chanel Les Beiges is the only powder product which I have ever had in over 30 years of makeup wearing which has formed a persistent grease layer. I wasn't that impressed by my Chanel eyeshadow stick either. I'm not in a rush to buy more Chanel now.

PollyPerky · 15/02/2017 14:53

We don't know if they are made in the same factory. One company owning another brand doesn't mean the products are identical. Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Kiehls and Lauder are the same company. Premier Inn owns Wetherspoons. Who owns the shares doesn't mean the products are the same.

PollyPerky · 15/02/2017 14:54

OOooh- why has that come up as a link when I didn't make it one? Shock

paperbattles · 15/02/2017 15:19

I was told years ago by the head make up artist at Christian Dior - that their make up products were basically the same as cheaper brands - and the difference was that the consultants are trained to a better standard in how to apply the products and analyse the clients features; the consultants then pass this knowledge to the clients.
See also the new Beauty Pie make up club (I have no affiliation - I knew the founder's child at school). She admits that all the same factories produce the products, but some have slightly more pigment; and basically luxury make up is marketing hype.
Gutting really that we all fall for the hype.
