Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

I think your hair looks pretty cool drama.
You'll regret dying it.

itsaldramarama · 08/08/2015 11:59

Thanks I think it's beyond a touch up and I really want to grow it out ! You are right suzi I will just have to brazen it out ! Come this far would be a shame to give in now ! Think about 9 weeks ? Il throw the dye out and just put some extra lippy on !
It's all the girls from work who so far haven't commented ! Few odd looks though ! Be interesting to see if I get comments tonight once the drinks are flowing !!!!

itsaldramarama · 08/08/2015 12:00

Thanks coco :) some times I think yes it looks ok and then just have a little wobble ! Il keep at it :)

suzanneyeswecan · 08/08/2015 12:17

?If you do get criticism (however veiled) bear in mind that those who continue to dye are likely to feel the need to justify themselves so try not to take it personally.

Two tone is just two tone hair, it's not like you've had swear words tattooed on your forehead ?Grin

just keep going and it becomes 'ombre'Wink

hotCocolepew · 08/08/2015 12:42

I think your hair has got to the point where it loks like you are growing it out, rather than forgot to do your roots Grin

itsaldramarama · 08/08/2015 13:33

Thanks :)

I've been slowly going grey for the past 20 years (since university). Well I get white streaks. Used to colour the white streak at the back when I had to put my hair up for work, with a wash out semi permanent dye, but always thought it made my hair look dull, was glad when I no longer needed to wear my hair up. I haven't a picture to upload but my hair is going the way of the bloke in this music video but still looks slightly more on blond side at the moment (getting whiter as time goes on).

I bet it looks good capsium
Well I didn't get any comments surprisingly !! And it looked so obvious because I just put it up and left the front smooth ! The grey sparkled through quite nicely I thought ! Dd commented and said about time you did your roots !! ( she's a hairdresser and thinks I'm mad !! DH has still to comment although he did so I looked nice and my skin and make up looked amazing !! But then in the past it had taken him a week to notice I went from red to dark brown ;)

itsaldramarama · 09/08/2015 09:43

*did say ..

hotCocolepew · 09/08/2015 09:53

Yay! Good going drama Smile I'm with you on DHs never noticing! I once shaved my head and it took DH 3 days to inquire if I "had did something different to your hair " with a puzzled look on his face.

Funnily enough he noticed my grey rinse almost immediately.

capsium · 09/08/2015 10:08

It is funny people who don't know my hair is going grey/White have often assumed I have it highlighted with blond highlights. Couldn't be further than the truth. Haven't been to the hairdresser's in about 10 years - I even cut it myself in a long layered style using a variation of the MN method.

My mother, who has dyed her hair for years has even decided to grow her's out a bit to see what colour(s) comes through. Her's is a variety of white aand reddish blond colours, she keeps saying she's not sure whether the reddish patch is old dye or not. I like it though, the variety of colours looks interesting. I love multi tonal hair. Smile

hotCocolepew · 12/08/2015 16:47

By a fluke my great dying skills I've managed to dye my hair silvery grey

suzannefollowmyvan · 12/08/2015 18:09

wow Coco, that looks really really good :o

hotCocolepew · 12/08/2015 18:56

Thanks, I'm quite pleased with myself Grin
The toner was good but I kept ending up with lilac hair until I washed it for the first time. Probably because the ends are wrecked through bleaching.

suzannefollowmyvan · 12/08/2015 19:02

in hindsight I wish I'd dyed mine silver before I dyed over the bleach with various shades of brown.
But that was before I made up my mind to go au naturel
oh well:o

hotCocolepew · 12/08/2015 19:09

I'm not sure what it will look like as it grows out, I still have dark hair in there somewhere Smile. And I dont think I could get this colour again Confused

itsaldramarama · 12/08/2015 20:51

Looking good coco :)

suzannefollowmyvan · 12/08/2015 21:17

are you prepared to say what you used Coco?
(or is it a secret recipe Wink )

hotCocolepew · 12/08/2015 22:01

It's very hi tech Grin
Lots of bleach, which turned it platinum. I didn't like it so I bought baby blonde and combed it through in streaks. I ended up doing it three times because I realised it was going silver.
Pure fluke. I had actually bought the blonde to put on so the toner would look more grey rather than purple.

suzannefollowmyvan · 12/08/2015 22:22

Sounds as if baby blond, in the absence of red tones has given you a grey / silver ash
What serendipity:)
I darent use bleach again ?Shock

SewingAndCakes · 13/08/2015 11:58

That looks brilliant Coco.

Thought I'd update with my growth, it's roughly 10 weeks since I dyed my hair. I'm still toying with bleaching out the brown and putting a silver over the top/using a temporary purple over the lot/leaving as is and getting a short cut in September.

lowcrabdiet · 13/08/2015 13:46

Hi can I join in?

I started goibg grey at 10 and now in my mid thirties I am at least 80% grey/silver. On a whim I got my shoulder-length, dyed brown hair chopped off yesterday and I now have a short asymmetric cut which has been bleached to within an inch of its life.

The longer bits are yellowy blonde, but the roots are platinum. The plan is to gradually get the whole lot light enough for a silver/grey dye to go over it. Then my roots will never be an issue again hurrah! (well until get bored of the natural look and decide to change colours again Wink )

SewingAndCakes · 13/08/2015 14:02

Hi lowcrabdiet. Wow 10 is very young to have started going grey isn't it? Must have been hard to deal with.

I think the way you're going about it sounds good. It's what I was going to do, but my roots are a bit longer and I'm reluctant to bleach them after growing them out. Think I'm going to go for a crop when school starts again.

SewingAndCakes · 13/08/2015 14:04

I have a plan to have grey hair with a purple streak underneath eventually - I don't want to appear too grown up Smile

itsaldramarama · 13/08/2015 14:08

Sounds good lowcrab :) sewingand cakes think you are roughly at the same stage as me ! Last dye about last week in mAy ! Wish it would hurry up and grow !!! Are you going as short as your roots ? Keep measuring mine and imagining what I look like if I chopped the whole bloody lot off up to the grey bits !!!
