For those of us going grey

Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

Silvery if you post a pic I will too Grin .

SilveryFoxyLady · 12/07/2015 16:21

Ooh I'll definitely try one of the purple shampoos, that Lush one sounds gorgeous.

Can anyone recommend anything to combat the wiry white hairs that stick straight up from the top of my head. I have really fine hair, and these wiry buggers are a new thing to me.

Serums and things are too heavy and greasy for my hair.. is there anything really lightweight that will calm them down?

IReallyAmHephzibah · 12/07/2015 16:47

Please please please post pics, I am trying to convince myself that grey is ok! I have always said I will always be too young to be grey but now.........
I have been colouring my hair for the last 15 years and I am sick of it. I do my roots every two weeks and I am sure I am becoming sensitive to the dye.
I have shoulder length hair and am wondering if a hairdresser could put grey highlights in to blend natural and coloured hair through the transition??????

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 12/07/2015 17:02

I'm grey, or at least mostly grey. I refuse to put more chemicals on my skin than absolutely necessary, so dye is out of the question. I just use a very mild organic shampoo.

I do have it cut well every six weeks, though. Recently someone mentioned that they wished they were brave enough to be grey. Brave? It's not exactly halting a stampeding bull, is it?

SilveryFoxyLady · 12/07/2015 17:06

I asked my hairdresser about grey highlights, and he wasn't keen. He did suggest blonde highlights, but as a lifelong brunette with pale skin, I really didn't think it would suit me.

Check out my thread Hephzibah (linked above) for some photos of some very fabulous looking grey haired ladies.

FWIW, I ummed and aahed about the decision for ages, and then just skipped a hair appointment and told myself I'd just see what happened... kept telling myself I could go and get it coloured any time if I decided to.. and just kept going. I'm committed now that I've 'come out' as a grey haired woman. It's out there, no hiding it.

For me, the worst was the ridiculous fear I'd get every 4 weeks that my grey roots would show through and people would notice them. As if they'd care - but I was really embarrassed about it. Now I've passed that 'will they notice I've got grey hair' stage, all I have to worry about now is how hideous the half-and-half stage will be!

As I have a graduated bob the longest bits are at the front, so once it's long enough, i'm going to cut in a fringe and lop off loads of brown in one fell swoop.

debbietheduck · 12/07/2015 17:14

Oh yes going grey is good! Here are some reasons:

  • it is only women who are expected to dye their greying hair, men never do. This is sexist (obviously) and yet another waste of our time and resources. It must be Resisted!
  • getting older is good (at least, better than the alternative). We should be grateful we have the chance to go grey, not everyone does.

  • I really, really cannot be arsed to dye my hair.

And I'm another big fan of Lush Daddyo shampoo!

woodhill · 12/07/2015 17:27

not brave enough but an interesting thread. I am 48, I suspect my hair is white at the front but it is hard to tell unless I grow it out.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 12/07/2015 17:28

debbie yes, you are completely right. How many men dye their hair to cover the grey compared to women? I wonder if there are any statistics anywhere?

bonzo77 · 12/07/2015 17:33

Grey selfie: no make up though! Went cold turkey in December 2013

I'd love to see a photo op. I'm 35 and I'm so fed up of coloring my hair. I don't really think the warm brown color suits me and it only last a week or so anyway. I'm worried about going grey though because I don't want to look older than I am. I'm also worried that I don't have the right type of hair to pull off the grey look. My hair is curly and will frizz in damp weather, it doesn't really suit being short.

ObeseDenise · 12/07/2015 17:45

Here's me a few months ago. I'm growing mine out so it's below chin length now.

Going grey is quite popular again its nice if you have the patience i know a few grey ladies i just dont have the patience for it.

magimedi · 12/07/2015 18:10

I nearly changed my name to Silver vixen a while ago!

Started going grey at 26 & am now totally white & have been for at least 10 years.

If you can get hold of Klorane shampoo for white hair - it is amazing. I use it twice a week & the purple stuff about every ten days. (Wash my hair every other day).

If you are going to France on holiday it is much cheaper there, but it lasts for ages & really makes your hair gleam.

PS DH, who is blonde uses their blonde shampoo & also recommends it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/07/2015 18:14

I've got thd same problem as Backforgood, very deep chocolatey brown hair with a few random greys dotted about. I'm 48 and don't really want to start dying (I brown henna it about twice a year for depth but it doesn't cover greys). I'm not averse to a head of silver, there are some amazing heads of grey/silver amongst my friends. It's just getting there that's the problem. At the moment I just pull them out, but you can't do that forever.

MamaLazarou · 12/07/2015 18:15

Hepzibah, that's just what my colourist did for me: put some light highlights through the front to help the grey streaks blend in with the rest so there wasn't an obvious line between the dyed and undyed bits.

Touch of Silver is very good but smells a bit old ladyish to me. My hair is curly so I only shampoo every few weeks: I use the Touch of Silver conditioner to co-wash.

Yarp · 12/07/2015 18:16

You look great in the second photo. You can see how dark your hair was to begin with - the tones are really interesting and go with the strong makeup

I am also dark, fair-skinned, green eyes, but I am dying it lighter and lighter with highlights. Big upkeep but I'm not ready to be grey

Allofaflumble · 12/07/2015 18:32

Bonzo I think you look equally good in both photos. My hair is more "mad cat lady" but I have a two inch wide silver streak which I love.

When I do get it high/low lighted (not often) I always ask them to leave the streak as I feel it is so unusual.

Allofaflumble · 12/07/2015 18:34

Sorry. Just realised it is two different posters! Anyway you hoth look great.

Yarp · 12/07/2015 18:34

OP

You have very good skin.

Allofaflumble · 12/07/2015 18:35

Both

Yarp · 12/07/2015 18:36

All

me too (really must pay attention Blush

bonzo, Obese, you both have nice skin and your hair is not ageing

Mrsjayy · 12/07/2015 18:57

My grey hair is white and course its horrible Sad

lowcrabdiet · 12/07/2015 19:02

This thread is great!

I'm 35 and my natural hair is now 70-90% grey/white. It runs through my family very strongly so I'm used to having white haired women in their 30s/40s around me. Unfortunately DM had such a hang up about her hair that whilst I think it's beatiful I seem to have internalised her message that it makes you feel old ugly and worthless!

I have been thinking about just ditching the dark brown colour and going silver for a while now but can't quite get over her years of negative conditioning.

Has anyone grown their grey through whilst keeping their hair long? Mine is past shoulder length, I don't want to cut it, but I'm increasingly tempted to stop colouring it! Any ideas on how I can do that without it looking dreadful?

MrsKillianJones · 12/07/2015 19:08

Mine is going white rather than grey. My sister is appalled at my letting nature take its course.

Mine is dark brown with white bits, it's very noticeable. Never bothered to dye it though.

I'm 50% just lazy and 50% just want to say fuck you to the whole women must look youthful shit.

Mrsjayy · 12/07/2015 19:15

I wish my mum would just go grey her hairdresser keeps saying go blonder its not a very nice colour we are dark haired and the yellow blonde looks meh
