Canada Goose

Wrong season, I know, but I'm coming into some money and I like to plan ahead Grin.

Fed up of being cold and wet in winter, and thinking of getting a Canada Goose coat. Quite like the Shelburne, Kensington and Trilium.

It's a lot of money and i'm only going to consider one if they are fab. Anyone got a Canada Goose? Are you happy with it?

They are fantastic coats but I didn't buy one because I realized it was much too heavy duty for the British winter. They are what my friends in Canada wear in a -20 winter climate.

Dp has one but as bue says they're just so warm he very rarely wears it.
I suppose it would be good for going on winter walks, but for getting in and out of the car not so good also dps weighs a ton!

I don't think they are really for British winters. I have a synthetic (I don't purchase down products) insulated parka from Fjallraven and its really warm, took it with me to Iceland in March and it stood up to the elements when caving and glacier walking.

I've got one, it's way too warm for British winters. At least for the South East.

Hi - I am in Canada, I got through the winter with a longer Abercrombie and fitch down one, which was sufficient in -30 with snow pants. Many of my friends have Canada Goose but to be honest, they say that they still require layering when it gets below -10. They do last but the dry cleaners here won't take them as they are so expensive! I would agree with others that they are almost too hot for the british climate. Remember they are made for a cold DRY climate and down isn't really known for it's waterproof qualities. When it's wet they usually recommend wearing a gore-tex jacket under (yes, under) the down. If money is no object they are a really smart looking jacket but I would look out for something with waterproofing too as it only takes half an hour of wet snow to render down completely useless.

oh - and the trim around the hood is real fur (coyote). People here don't mind, but my british friend bought one without realising! You can detach it and it is incredibly warm, but thought I'd mention it.

Wouldn't they be too warm for the UK? I am in Canada and people wear them in - 20 weather. A lot of people here have them. I personally do not like real fur.

Op i looked at canada goose, moncler and woolrich and went for woolrich which i am really pleased with, similar down jacket to canada goose but abit better for uk, all the top brands are real fur around the hoods, never had a problem with this though.

I have a Trillium and wear it through quite a bit of London's winter. Honestly, it has made winter bearable for me - I get very cold hands/feet/neck.

I have worn it when caught in rain, it's water resistant but not water proof.

Are you in London as a friend of mine who lives there bought one and never uses it as it makes him way too hot.

Yes, am in London. Others have said similar. Some of their coats seem to be lighter weight than others. Although 'light weight' by Canadian standards may still be too warm, I suppose.

I'm just always cold. Layered a uniqlo down jacket under a didrikson last winter. Not bad, but everything below my waist was still freezing.

You. I coach, Vince Camuto and Calvin Klein do some lovely
Jackets too. Try Nordstrom, they ship I believe internationally, but things are very seasonal here. they will have a much better range
In November. And i find accessories - insulated trousers, snood, snow boots. hat
That covers ears and gore tex gloves are essential. Coat alone is not
Enough! And make sure the coat covers your bottom. No wonder Canada is a country style forgot! (At least for half the year)

It copes with London rain - ie stepping out of the tube and realising you have no umbrella. It's also been fine when snowing, but I wouldn't rely on it as a proper rain proof coat.

I have poor circulation (Raynauds) & it's honestly really changed how well I cope with winter - I wear it more or less any day that's below 10 degrees. My partner also has one and whilst he doesn't feel the cold the same way, he wears it quite a lot through winter too.

They have them in Harrods, so will have a look (although Amazon seem to have better prices). Will also look at Woolrich.

One more question! How do you find the sizing? Normally with a winter coat I allow room for a thick jumper underneath. But I might not need this if it is a really warm coat? What do you do?

Sizing is normal. Mine is a size up (medium - I'm a 10) as I bought it in a bit of a hurry in Nordstrom but I probably would have been better off in a small. The medium looks good but I have the waist elastics drawn tight so it's fitted. I have very long arms and the inner cuffs actually reach all the way to my finger tips which is great.

I get quite a few compliments on it - I even had a male colleague in a different department write me an email 'weird question but I want to get my wife a coat like yours, can you tell me about it!'

If you are going to the States they're about £400 - a lot cheaper.

Am worrying a bit here - I had assumed they would be waterproof! Always had down coats for winter so not too worried about it being warm, but really need it to be waterproof Shock

On Mumsnet advice, I bought a Didrikson's parka a couple of years ago for London winters, and associated school runs, standing about in parks, etc, and it's perfect. Lightweight but toasty warm, and totally waterproof. And, if I may say, rather stylish. No down, no real fur...

Long arms is a bonus ruby. Also have long arms and find that 'gap' between gloves and sleeves very annoying!

Madison - they say they are water resistant. Might that do the job for you? My Didrikson is fully waterproof - I have been in torrential rain with with and everything covered by the coat has been dry.

Herbaceous - which Didrikson did you get? I have a Thelma, which isn't designed for cold weather really. I've been very happy with it, as long as it doesn't get cold!

I can't remember what it's called! Irene, perhaps? It's one of the ones designed for the cold, but not Arctic cold, IYKWIM.
