Canada Goose

Wrong season, I know, but I'm coming into some money and I like to plan ahead Grin.

Fed up of being cold and wet in winter, and thinking of getting a Canada Goose coat. Quite like the Shelburne, Kensington and Trilium.

It's a lot of money and i'm only going to consider one if they are fab. Anyone got a Canada Goose? Are you happy with it?

I live in Montreal, and here you wear them for maybe 3/4 months a year. Way too warm for the UK, you'll never wear it.

They look cool though Wink

MadisonMontgomery · 08/06/2015 10:17

Well I've had an email from Canada Goose this morning - they basically said the montebello is suitable for light rain only, & probably too warm for the UK Sad so waiting to see what my jacket is like but will probably be going back. Looked at Woolrich but they aren't waterproof either. Any recommendations?

TheAssassinsGuild · 08/06/2015 12:18

Oh bugger!!

Didrikson does do completely waterproof long jackets/coats. I am very happy with my Thelma and have stayed completely dry. But it is not warm. Possibly Didrikson have warm ones that are also waterproof, so it might be worth having a look.

This is the problem though - a longer length jacket which is both warm and waterproof and looks good. There has been thread upon thread on this issue, and it seems that you always end up needing to make a compromise somewhere along the line. Tis bloody annoying.

Do let me know what you think of it once it arrives? I am still optimistic based on ruby's experience, as someone who appears to have the same issues with cold as I do, so I will go and have a look at them in Harrods when I can.

Sorry, but Woolrich artic parka which i what i have is closest to CG and is definately waterproof.
They were designed to withstand all extreme weather conditions and that definately includes rain.
I walk daily in the winter in rain and snow and i have never been wet or cold.

Madbengalmum · 08/06/2015 16:05

Maybe the cheaper thinner woolrich arent waterproof/resistant but the ones compareable to Cananda Goose are. They do some lightweight summery jackets which arent but the £650+ generally are

TheAssassinsGuild · 08/06/2015 16:23

Thanks for confirming mad. They all look a bit shorter than CG, which is a pain. But will investigate in the flesh, so to speak.

Thank you!

Well it's arrived & I am really torn! It is a beautiful coat, really well made, and surprisingly non- bulky, hard to believe it is rated to -20. I've worn it in the house over a Breton top & I'm not roasting in it. BUT it is a small fit - I'm a 14-16 on top & this is a 16-18 and it is very tight. So realistically if I keep it I will have to exchange for a 20-22, or lose some weight! Fabric is thick, and definitely feels waterproof, despite only being water-resistant, my current down jacket which I've never had problems with in the rain is much thinner, flimsier fabric.

Can someone make a decision for me please Confused

MadisonMontgomery · 08/06/2015 17:47

Thanks madbengalmum - the one I liked which was similar to CG said water resistant, I wonder if they just say that to cover themselves?

TheAssassinsGuild · 08/06/2015 17:51

Oh crap!! That's a tough one....

ruby says she is fine in her's. Do you really feel the cold? Would you be fine with dressing very lightly underneath it, or would you need extra layers when you got to wherever it is you were going to when you wore it? I coudl see that being a potential pain - that an extra jumper underneath is too much, but that you need said extra jumper when you get to wherever it is that you are going.

Would you be OK carrying a small umbrella with you in case it does chuck it down? Or does that defeat part of the purpose of the coat? I got into hoods and rejected umbrellas when I had DD and realised I needed both hands to push the pram. Quite like hood now, and might find it annoying to have to switch back to umbrellas (not least because of the Raynaud's and my hands freezing off). Remembering some very heavy rain last winter....

I'm not much help, am I?

OP posts:
MadisonMontgomery · 08/06/2015 18:04

No that's helpful! I think I'm going to send it back - I really feel the cold so I do need to have a jumper on underneath.

Madbengalmum · 08/06/2015 18:14

I found my waterproof woolrich on mytheresa.com and they have a really good selection, as the winter ones are just coming in.
Mine is mid thigh length, as i wanted to cover my bum and be really warm and dry.

ZaraW · 08/06/2015 18:19

Does it have to be down? Synthetic works better in wet conditions www.backcountry.com have some good deals with both down and synthetic parkas. www.rei.com may have some good bargains in their outlet section as well.

herbaceous · 08/06/2015 19:20

Viking Kids has a good range of Didriksons parkas, including the warm winter ones. As they're Scandinavian they're designed for far parkier weather than we get, and have long sleeves.

TheWatchersCouncil · 16/10/2015 12:16

I name changed, but I'm Assassins.
In case anyone's interested, I bought the Canada Goose Kensington, have been wearing it this week, and I love it! It's a level down from the Trilium in terms of insulation, which is one of the reasons I went for it. Happy to give more feedback on it, if anyone's interested.
Another brand I was considering is Arcteryx - slightly cheaper (although still pricey) and fur-free.

FrancesHeck · 16/10/2015 14:45

The fur put me off, as did their association with Mitt Romney's hedge fund.

TheWatchersCouncil · 16/10/2015 18:48

Then the Arcteryx I suggested (certainly fur free, unsure about any hedge fund associations) may be a good alternative. Smile

FrancesHeck · 16/10/2015 19:20

But that has a dinosaur skeleton for a logo. I did like the Fjallraven things someone else suggested up thread though.

Danefae coats are great too. Danish brand, some have detachable inner liners for multi seasons.
