Not sure if I should be starting the new thread as I'm the last poster on the old one - is this how it works?

OP posts:
hattymattie · 15/06/2015 10:53

Well I would cry if I looked like that now but would be reasonably happy looking like that at seventy and especially so at eighty.

motherinferior · 15/06/2015 11:02

I got DD2 a Fawcett THIS IS WHAT A FEMINIST LOOKS LIKE shirt too.

Silver sandals it is; or the nice dark red shoes Addle passed on to me.

Stropperella · 15/06/2015 11:04

Aargh, I am trying that Soltan BB facial sunscreen and it makes me look jaundiced. Damn. Will have to give it to dd, who is a bit less blue-and-white-with-red-bits than I am, so maybe it will suit her. :(

I'd be interested to see what that Daily Fail woman's daughter looks like, seeing as she is of crepey age. Lucky woman, being super hale and hearty at 81 and she is obviously a very self-contained and self-reliant person. Not sure I completely believe everything she says. I believe that a life entirely free of having to compromise to suit other people's needs and quirks does not necessarily make for a stress-free life. And sometimes stress is maybe the price you pay for having a richer life. If I'd stayed by myself, I'd still be the selfish, inward-looking miserable bugger I was at 20. And I doubt that I'd have fewer wrinkles. But as with everything, YMMV.

motherinferior · 15/06/2015 11:28

At least it was only six quid, Stropps. Sorry.

Stropperella · 15/06/2015 11:32

Lol, not your fault MI. Should have tried a cheeky smear along the jaw line before purchasing. Made the classic "well, it looks ok on my wizened paw" mistake. Grin Am pretty sure dd will make good use of it.

hattymattie · 15/06/2015 11:36

It was Christopher Lee who seemed to look amazing and entirely lucid at 93. A life well lived it seems.

Rosebag · 15/06/2015 11:46

Size 16 minimum. And about 70. But she looks nice. Why should people automatically assume that looking good is synonymous with looking young? I suspect she'll take it very badly when she starts to develop old age related health problems. It's inevitable...

Silver sandals...why ever not MI. I would want people to wear bright colours at my funeral...and preferably have 1970s glam rock playing and lots of singing. The former would be ok...there's no obligation to wear black at our funerals although many are in sombre colours. But music and flowers are a complete no no. Mores the pity.

MBE lady has texted me to make sure I am picking up her DS today, seeing to his tea and taking him with DD to their rehearsal at YT. Hmm of course I am, and I have bought her flowers. I am beset with ruminations that I have very little time left to Make A Difference before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Seriously considering doing a Shirley Valentine. I suspect that if I announced it to my lot, theyd hesitate just long enough to look up from their devices, and then say "what's for Dinner?" How about it Hatty? Ready when you are. When you posted that thing about your kids lambasting you for allegedly not speaking good enough French...I thought of my BFF whose teenage kids say stuff to her like " what do you know...you're only a librarian" and " why are you tired...you only work two days a week." Imagine..... Angry

motherinferior · 15/06/2015 11:56

Talking of shuffling off mortal coil, must make a nice curry for tomorrow after the funeral. DP has hippy t'ai chi and I want to come home to a proper meal cooked by someone who is good at cooking not sure that would always cover DP anyway. And I certainly won't be up to doing it myself, I strongly suspect.

lalsy · 15/06/2015 14:21

Rose, could you do a Shirley Valentine at least as far as the meet up?....we could have a short seminar on Invisible Graft.

dd got this for Christmas.

bigTillyMint · 15/06/2015 15:07

Finally catching up after a nice day out!

DM woman looks great for 81 (my DM is even less wrinkly on the face at 84Envy) but doesn't look like she's in her fifties (unless all skin was covered, maybe at a push) and definitely NOT a 12!

Funeral footwear choices sound good MI.

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/06/2015 15:48

I would wear silver sandals, MI, unless I was going to a family funeral - I scandalised everyone last time by having a discreet red trim on my shoes. My family funerals are Norf London Working Class and

a) everyone wears black
b) everyone drinks gin afterwards and lots of it
c) there is usually a row afterwards
d) flowers are always in the form of a Chrysanthemum "Mum", "Dad" or "Nan." If you are not that close to the bereaved, then it has to be a wreath, or a pillow or a heart. Flowers are viewed after the funeral and criticised heartily, and the criticism conveyed back to those who didn't make it for whatever reason "Your flowers were shocking. I hope you didn't pay much for them" or "You had x type of flowers in your wreath. Did you know/did you ask for them?" (The implication being that such flowers were unsuitable.)
e) someone always gets very drunk and sits on the buffet.
f) someone gets told to fuck off "because they're not family" - this is usually directed at someone who has had the temerity to marry in, even if they have been married for fifty years.
g) if it's a Catholic funeral no-one of my mother's generation will go into the church (this works for weddings too)
h) if Spurs are playing, they will come along after the match (see above re weddings) "S/he'd not have wanted us to miss the game."

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/06/2015 15:50

i) if someone falls asleep at the wake, they will have their flies undone, a party sausage inserted, and photos taken. Because life goes on...

bigTillyMint · 15/06/2015 15:54
Grin
beachyhead · 15/06/2015 16:28

I can't believe anyone noticed the trim on your shoes with all that going on, Mrs S Grin

NUFC69 · 15/06/2015 17:05

We have arrived at our luxurious log cabin in the Kootenays - two long days on the road to get here, through stunning scenery. Evidently visits from moose, elk, mountain goats are a regular happening, but if we see a bear or a cougar we are to report it to Reception! And remember a fed bear is a dead bear.

Glad to hear the exams are drawing to an end; good luck, BD, and how is it today, Crem? I always worry when you don't post for a little while. I would second and third what others have said about our DC working through things and coming out the other side in one piece.

lalsy · 15/06/2015 17:33

Oooh NU, that sounds exciting.

hattymattie · 15/06/2015 17:44

cremolafoam · 15/06/2015 20:26

Nina Snelling has never had teeth whitening because she's got dentures. Apart from that she looks well built as my dm would say. I did that thing of covering her hair and looking at the face on its own and she does look like a young octogenarian. It's the hair. It's the hair!!!!. and the Not Wearing Aged Style clothes.i was in Zara today and thinking how I'd love to get mum in there and out of her Marksies pale jeans , pastel pullover and pearls. She could really look amazing in Zara linen and modern jewellery.

Dd Is working on A budget. I have encouraged her to go and volunteer at Barnardos shop or somewhere to give some structure to her day. I have encouraged her to perhaps start applying for paid work in Ggow as she will have 9weeks before term starts.
we are getting somewhere. But I am holding my breath a bit.
So tired today after work. All motivation for the job has fallen over a cliff. Knackered negotiating all the time. Zzzz

Mrs s you made me larf. Some of that really resonates with me.

cremolafoam · 15/06/2015 20:27

And please can I come and live in Crepey Cottage Retreat?
I would bring the best mix tape

wordassociationfootball · 15/06/2015 20:51

BTM Can I be a heavy pencil for the 26th, please? I will know fo sho, soon.

I had the crappest of crap sleeps and am fit for nought but being looked after which no one except me can really do. Am booking a sedan chair to cart me to Crepey retreat, possibly to the isolation wing as am in the mood of that Katherine Tate's character that shrieks at every tiny movement.

Want to make friendly contact with DH. Just want a hug and some kind words really, but if I could possibly manage to offer up shaggage, said kind words far more likely. But then shaggage in Katherine Tate character mode could Go Wrong.....

Is it worth the gamble Crepeys?

lalsy · 15/06/2015 20:54

Crem, holding breath with you.

I'll bring the gin to the crepey retreat.

ds has his last GCSE tomorrow, which will be a relief as we all seem to have lost interest he and dd will then be on a similar trajectory - she has been spending the day watching tv in her pjs [I am smiling and waving through this as she has some long days of paid work on her feet in ridiculous uniforms coming up [evil cackle emoticon].

motherinferior · 15/06/2015 21:05

Can you look on it as an investment, WAF?

I am reading a 691pp Bengali novel (in translation obvs) I have been instructed to read by historian friend (Bengali) for my choli-ripper. It's quite hard-going.

Am riveted by fact that Elsa Lanchester was born round here. Boris Karloff was also born v near here. Her parents were radical socialists who never married. His grandparents were Anglo-Indian and his great-aunt was Anna Leonowens of Anna and the king of Siam. I feel all this should be joined up somehow. D'you think E&B indulged in local reminiscences off-set from the Bride of Frankenstein?
