When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

limitedperiod... that would catch my eye too, like anything else that's not what you usually see.

It was the posts from women saying that swimsuits are odd, more conspicuous, drawing attention... that I just don't like. It's not odd to wear a swimsuit, it just isn't. It's not odd to wear a bikini either.

Some women are just so horribly, pointlessly judgemental about other womens' bodies. Those who waste their time doing that are doing a terrible disservice to their children too.

I think Running Backwards Man is toning his buttocks Bakeoffcake.

Or that's his excuse.

It's usually between 5 and 6pm if you want to get to Salinas and see him.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/05/2015 18:58

I'm impressed at 'Running Backwards Man', how does he never fall off the kerb or run into a lamppost?

He could put Salinas on the map! Far more positive than being James Dean's last car crash site.

Roussette · 29/05/2015 19:03

I don't judge women in one piece swimsuits, I just wish more women would embrace their lumps and bumps of which I have many

Running Backwards Man might equal my Budgie Smuggler man doing yoga on the beach and humming. Grin

ZaraW · 29/05/2015 19:04

Most people don't care what you wear, if you feel confident in a bikini or ONE piece that's all that matters I certainly don't base my choice of clothing on others.

I hate sunbathing and would rather be swimming or snorkelling and I generally wear a one piece, I don't tan and prefer to be covered up plus I have scars from a lumpectomy which I like to keep covered. I also wear a rash vest when out in the water. Many people cover up in Asia so it's never a problem over there but in Europe people wear more revealing swimwear. So I shall continue to wear my one piece along with the 80 year olds...........

shushpenfold · 29/05/2015 19:05

I'm 45 and wouldn't dream of NOT wearing one for several years yet. I'm slim and keep fit and although I have a slightly saggy/wrinkled tum, I'm pleased to show that I've had 3 bubs in there and refuse to be embarrassed about it.

limitedperiodonly · 29/05/2015 19:18

I've tried to find Running Backwards Man on YouTube to no avail.

But he's well-known and has been featured in the Pacha magazine.

There's also The Mushroom Man who wears a fungi festooned hat and has a klaxon and patrols the Calle de la Virgen in pursuit of donations.

Odd people, But proud of their appearance.

Two weeks to go and I will be wearing a bikini.

I'm in my 40s and still wear a bikini.

My mum still wears one and she is in her 70s, she just choses one with a bit more coverage now.

Liberated71 · 29/05/2015 20:01

Nope

Ubik1 · 29/05/2015 20:08

I'm
In my 40s and wear a bikini. I have reasonably slim tummy but loads of stretch marks and crinkles.

I've had three children and just thought fuck it I'll wear what I damn well want to.
And in Spain no one cares.

You will only be looked at if you are 19 and madly gorgeous. Everyone else is a mass of sweaty red/brown flesh.

LastOneDancing · 29/05/2015 20:15

Rule of thumb - do men worry about this? Do they bollocks. I love that Southern Comfort ad with the middle aged man in his trunks except that he's letchy just doing his thing.

Get thee a pretty bikini.

I've got three beautiful freya/floozie ones packed for my hols and I have a slightly wibbly cellulite stomach post pregnancy. But I love the feeling of the sun on my skin - why should I let a non-perfect appearance judgement stop me from doing something that brings me pleasure?

Caveat: I wear a high factor suncream and sit in the shade at the hottest part of the day.

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 29/05/2015 20:28

I am 50 and have a very long body, so have seldom worn a one piece. I moved from little triangle bikinis many, many years ago, and then wore tankinis (Boden's are excellent). Last summer, it was so hot on holiday in Spain that I bought a well fitting bikini. I felt liberated! it was a pretty check fabric and gave plenty of support. I felt glamorous on the beach for the first time ever. I also bought three little skirts in plain bright colours made from swimwear material which covered up my problem area. They were from Calzedonia (sp?) which have branches in the UK (I think). I bought two more bikinis from M and S this year in plain colours to wear with one of the little skirts on the beach in August.

Just to add, although I am fairly slim, I have cellulite laden thighs, drooping boobs and plenty of spider veins. Quite a catch, really. I will be wearing my bikinis with pride this summer, alongside many other ladies in the Med.

BeaufortBelle · 29/05/2015 20:56

If you feel comfy wearing a bikini you should. I don't at 55; my mother does at 79! She's always had a better body than me Angry.

Eliza22 · 29/05/2015 21:07

I wish I could. Go for it!

MrsUltracrepidarian · 29/05/2015 21:12

Have not read the whole thread, but completely agree - not an age thing.
I wear a bikini age 54 this year. All about posture and confidence.
If anyone objects - sorry - your problem, not mine Grin

mygrandchildrenrock · 29/05/2015 21:13

I do understand about women being happy in their bodies, but I have a huge, and I mean huge scar down the length of my body. I am quite self conscious about it and wear a one piece because of this.
Are those of you who are bikini happy saying you would wear one showing a very long scar and would you look twice at me if I braved a bikini?

Bombinate · 29/05/2015 21:18

I would wear mine if I had a long scar, and I wouldn't notice or think anything of anyone wearing a bikini with a scar. It's none of my business.

MrsUltracrepidarian · 29/05/2015 21:20

I have a massive appendix scar from the days when they didn't care about how massive it was when they carved it out.
Couldn't give a tuppenny duck about what peeps thinks about it.
I'm in the sun, topping up the Vit D.

Roussette · 29/05/2015 21:21

mygrandchildren I would look at you in admiration with a huge scar (if i noticed you at all, because people on the beach are in their own zone).

That sounds trite, I don't mean it to be.

wtffgs · 29/05/2015 21:22

109?

If you like bikinis - wear them, please.

(gavel)

duckandcover · 29/05/2015 21:26

Dickins and Jones do gorge bikinis, with separate bottoms and tops. At 12 stone and 5'8" I feel ravishing in one. A bit like Vivienne Westwood where I think any man who doesn't want me is gay Grin

mygrandchildrenrock · 29/05/2015 21:27

Thank you, I shall think differently about wearing a bikini. Can't promise I'll wear one this year, but I will think about it!

bimandbam · 29/05/2015 21:32

I am 37 and size 16 with huge norks due to bfing and just being a huge norked kinda girl.

We fo.on holiday in a fortnight and I will be packing tankinis. 1 panache and 2 fantasie ones. I wouldn't feel comfortable in a 1 piece and being a g cup am limited on bikini tops to mainly online. Knew I would feel ok in a tankini. Not so sure about a bikini.

The main thing that gives me confidence is making sure it fits properly.

Doesn't matter if you are a size 10 or a size 20 badly fitting underwear looks and feels terrible. I would happily wear a correctly fitting bikini but right now feel happier in a tankini.

vindscreenviper · 29/05/2015 21:35

Seven pages and nobody has posted this yet?
Also, bikini manufacturers take note; I have 30e breasts, the last thing I need is padding in my bikini top. Underwired - yes. Supportive straps and band - yes. Padded/moulded cups - fuck off.

When do you become too old to wear a bikini?
