When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

Never too old - at least I hope not. I have a flabby mummy tummy now and don't look good, BUT I have to wear a bikini as I'm busty and tall so swimsuits never ever fit/give me the support I need. So I'll keep wearing bikini's until swimsuits give me the same support, which will probably be never.

Roussette · 31/05/2015 07:41

newmum yes I agree. Even if I were to wear a one piece, you can't get the same support as in an underwired bikini top that fits well, and is far more flattering for me.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/05/2015 10:08

I wore a bikini for the first time when we were in Florida a couple of weeks ago. I'm a size 14 and not particularly toned but I felt comfortable in it and didn't care what anyone else thought.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 31/05/2015 10:49

My experience of Med beaches is that women of all ages wear bikinis and more or less no locals wear one-pieces. However, I know I stick out anway, I'm the one in the coverup floaty M and S thing, the hat, the pale arms and legs and carrying a Kindle trying to stay out of the sun, so I think not rocking a bikini when I've got a flabby tummy is the least of the things that makes me conspicuous!

53, not yet in menopause and I just bought a new one but whether I will wear it on our holiday in July I don't know yet. I certainly don't think there should be an age limit nor for nudist beaches for that matter.

Perhaps the limit should be more to do with whether some is over 10 stone or not.

brusselsproutwarning · 31/05/2015 11:16

Never too old! It's all about confidence I think.

Eliza22 · 31/05/2015 11:31

I'm aiming to lose some weight for my holiday in July. If I get to 10 St I will be wearing my fifties style bikini. If not, it'll be a swim suit with sharing. I'm 53, menopausal and frankly, not in good shape at the moment.

Eliza22 · 31/05/2015 11:32

Swim suit with sarong

noddyholder · 31/05/2015 11:33

I think when you are too old to get to the beach! Love your body its the only one you have I spent years covering myself and anxious and those were the years when I was skinny and toned Now I don't care As long as its a good fit they are for everyone

noddyholder · 31/05/2015 11:40

I do wish I could find one to fit without underwiring though I hate the feel its too formal for me for the beach but all the non wires are teeny I don't care about sagging or droop ir any of that now I am nearly 50 I wish i could have a word with 20 yr old me!

OpheliaBitz · 31/05/2015 11:41

Ask yourself why you have to cover up when you are no longer young and toned, but men get to wear whatever they want at any age...

If you want to wear a bikini, wear one. Yes, there are shapes that flatter certain body types more than others, and it can be difficult to find bikinis that aren't just a few bits of triangular spandex, but there is no age limit on bikinis.

There are some beautiful vintage style bikinis online, although they tend to be a bit more pricey. I think there's a website called what Katie did, which has loads of vintage style clothes, including swimwear. Not sure if vintage is your thing, but just throwing it out there as an option Smile

I'm a size 20-something and just back from Tenerife where I wore a bikini all week.

I generally steel myself for being the latest person poolside but last week I most certainly wasn't.

I'm 44 and was one of the younger ones by the pool ( no it wasn't a SAGA holiday, just a hotel that was not really suited to kids)

Don't get me wrong, I an ideal world I'd wear a size 14/16 very comfortably, but for now I'm in the real world and so a 20 something it is.

I don't know if anyone was looking at me and judging, all I could see was people getting on with enjoying their holiday.
I do understand feeling self conscious, I sometimes feel that way myself, but I work hard for my holidays and really couldn't care less what someone who I'm unlikely to see again thinks of my choice of pool wear

postmanpatscat · 31/05/2015 12:36

I wear a swimsuit in the swimming pool in the UK and a bikini on the beach. I'm 47, 2 DC and size 8. My boobs are too small to justify underwiring and I prefer a tie neck that's easily removed to make a strapless top, plus bottoms that come far enough up to cover the lumpy bit of my tummy that never recovered from pregnancy. My go to bikini store is Matalan - I have about 8 in different prints now! They have a variety of tops and bottoms for all shapes and sizes and if you order online you escape the frustration of never finding both top AND bottom in the size you want.

Never too old, in my opinion, and I don't care what anyone else thinks or what they look like. If you want to lie around in the sun, go for it!

Your dh is the problem there or your perception of what he may or may not be thinking

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 31/05/2015 13:45

As most cellulite is on legs it makes no difference whether you wear a bikini or a one piece.

Agree with noddy about your perception of what your husband's thoughts are being the problem, or him if he really does think that.

mumofthemonsters808 · 31/05/2015 14:02

My Oh just pretends he can't see my cellulite and assures me it is nothing to worry about, he is well trained. Mines all over my legs too, so even a swimsuit would not solve the problem. I saw a photo of Samantha Cameron today, in her bikini and she looks fabulous, I look nothing like that in mine but other than wearing a tracksuit on the beach, there is no solution.

LotusLight · 31/05/2015 14:32

SC looks good as with her husband they both lost weight. It's always in the weight.

dexter73 · 31/05/2015 16:56

At the pool today it is about 80% bikinis (all ages and weights), 10% burkinis and 10% costumes.

Bunbaker · 31/05/2015 17:26

What is a burkini?

Bunbaker · 31/05/2015 17:52

I have never seen anyone wear one of those. Where are you?

thenightsky · 31/05/2015 17:59

I've seen a lot of burkinis on Egyptian beaches. They do appear to be struggle to swim and snorkel in though.

louloubelle2 · 31/05/2015 18:18

OrangesLemons why on earth should you or your husband think you shouldn't have cellulite?? Thats a shocking thing to say or think and if your husband really does think that, then shame on him. I assume he's a perfect specimen of manhood is he?
