When do you become too old to wear a bikini?

At what age do you become too old to wear a bikini n start wearing a full swimming costume.

I'm in my early 40s n have been looking for some new swimwear. Everywhere I go everything seems either tiny, too brightly coloured, not the right shape and far too young looking.

Is it time to admit defeat on the bikini front and start looking at swimming costumes?

Pag that is funny about the snorkelling selfie guy

I really like the look of some one piece ones, they look great.
But I feel more at ease in a bikini on the beach, I like the more simple ones without padding etc

JohnFarleysRuskin · 30/05/2015 12:58

Looking at other people is very different from caring what other people look like and very different from caring what other people think of you.

Wear what you like op.

I think I look best in a bikini but if I had longer legs I would def chose a plain swimsuit. I love that look.

DownWithThisTypeOfThing · 30/05/2015 13:04

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe
I wear a one-piece but I don't sunbathe (being paler than milk) and do a lot of swimming.

Me too - sarong, Sun hat, sunglasses, one piece & a gallon of suncream on my shoulders. I swim lots on holiday - just assumed a one piece more practical.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe
I find that people who look at themselves with a critical eye can't stop themselves from applying that to others. Wear what you want, think what you want, keep your mouths shut and your gaze polite.

Amen to that.

pinkfrocks · 30/05/2015 13:13

Actually girls, you are ALL out of date.

Just finished reading an article in today's Times from the fashion ed etc and spokesperson from Selfridges who say that one piece cossies are back and all the slebs are sporting them , not in black but in lovely 1950s style colours and prints.

so there.

Roussette · 30/05/2015 13:15

I'm happy to be out of date in a bikini though Pink ! Smile

JohnFarleysRuskin · 30/05/2015 13:19

Ah well if the spokesperson from selfridges And a writer from times says so then like the unthinking chimp I am, I must buy a flowery one piece, pronto. ;)

BeeInYourBonnet · 30/05/2015 13:22

Have bikinis become more popular?

I never used to wear them pre-DC when I was slim and young ( mostly because I foolishly thought I'd look fat!). Now I don't give a shit on hols, even though I have a saggy tum and stretchmarks a plenty! I've got a bit of perspective and tend to think a) there's plenty of bigger people wearing bikinis and they look fine and b) I'm never going to see any of these people again, so who cares.

Saying that, its swimming cossies all the way for me in UK swimming pools and spas.

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2015 13:23

I haven't seen any slebs in anything but bikinis - slightly skewed DM, but still.

I'm not keen on 50s style at all. Perhaps they've got some overstock to shift.

buggerthebotox · 30/05/2015 13:27

I think it may be a generational thing too. I've always been very self-conscious looks-wise and critically evaluative of others. I seem to belong in a parallel universe sometimes; I was brought up not to let it all "hang out" in public and still feel uncomfortable if I don't think I look my best in front of others.

I'd rather the not-so-good bits stayed between me and the mirror, or concealed within the confines of a swimsuit.

Bombinate · 30/05/2015 15:25

Selfridges must have some one pieces to shift!

Pagwatch · 30/05/2015 15:40

It is a bit of a random distinction too
Bikini vs swimsuit

pinkfrocks · 30/05/2015 15:49

Selfridges must have some one pieces to shift!

What I posted was a tiny summary.

You need to read the article.

Selfridges is only one of the stores mentioned and they state that 1-piece swimwear is up 25% this season. Also mentioned are Anthropologies and Eres, ( noted by our own lovely Bonsoir of this parish), Helen Mirren, Kim Kardashian and various other 'slebs'.

Pagwatch · 30/05/2015 15:55

Sorry squeezy.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 30/05/2015 15:55

pink, I am well ahead of the curve then. I've been wearing maillot styles for the last 3 summers Wink

hellswelshy · 30/05/2015 15:56

I wear a mix of tankinis and bikinis and im a size 14/16 with a twin tummy (they are 7 :-) ) and stretch marks! I wear them proudly and I don't care what people think. Be proud your body has produced children I say!

Merse · 30/05/2015 17:22

I firmly believe that there is NO reason to retire the bikini unless you are in poor shape. I am regularly struck by how lardy ample the 'younger generation' often is. Frankly, I think many middle-aged women look slimmer and more toned and therefore can rock a bikini better than many women decades younger….

pinkfrocks · 30/05/2015 17:25

I think that on the 'average' woman a 1-piece is easier on the eye and I rarely sunbathe anyway, or swim, but feel more comfortable in one than a 2-piece. Sunbathing is terribly ageing for the skin so all those midriffs will become slack and crepey in old age with too much sun exposure.

Pagwatch · 30/05/2015 17:33

I wear my bikini under an umbrella, emerging only to swim or get a cocktail.

We are all different.

You what?

So now all those people who (occasionally) wear bikinis are not only way behind trend (ala Selfridges) but they are also dreadful sun-worshippers, with greasy and baggy bellies. Charming.

You really feel very strongly about this, don't you, PinkFrocks?!

Pagwatch · 30/05/2015 17:36
Grin
pinkfrocks · 30/05/2015 17:38

Not as strongly as you do though, clearly - by pouncing on something so mild.

This is Style and Beauty not AIBU.

It is perfectly acceptable to point out the downside of too much sun on the skin- whether it's your arms, legs, face or torso. Skin cancer is more commonly caused by 2 weeks of strong sun annually on white skin than anything else. Read about it if you are sceptical.

I speak as someone who sun worshipped in my 20s (never my face though) and I can certainly see the difference between the areas that got sun and those that didn't.

My ass - not so much

Italiangreyhound · 30/05/2015 17:48

When you no longer want to wear a bikini, that is when you are too old to wear a bikini.
