Is long hair more attractive and youthful, in your opinion? What length is your hair? How attractive do you feel?

After having long hair for the last 30+ years, I recently got mine cut to shoulder length.

I can still tie it up so its not super short, but I have a tiny ponytail when I do.

Anyway, I'm only 35 so not that old but...

Celebrities seem to all have long, bouncy, glossy hair. My hair was nice the day it was blow dried but as soon as I stepped outside if it was raining or my second day hair was not great.

I really did fancy a change but I'm wondering if I feel less attractive with shorter hair, I don't really know why? Maybe I did subconsciously hide behind it.

So my question, do you think length of hair has any bearing on attractiveness? Not that it's all about looks, I know that, but ykwim!

How do you feel about your hair and looks?

I do actually like my new hairstyle and that's the thing it's a style rather then just long hair but I suddenly feel different to what I'm used to and maybe a bit invisible. Sad

TheHappinessTrap one of the reasons I had my hair lopped off is that when its short, I don't need to do anything to it. No products and no drying. I wash it daily, comb in a parting and let it dry. That's it. I think "styling" a short haircut is unnecessary if you have a good cut that works with your hair. That's the beauty of short!

I'm 32 and had long (mid back) red (dyed) hair which I could style in fancy plaits, up dos or loose curls/ waves. When I had DS last year I grew some dye out and got it cut shoulder length as I wouldn't have time to style it, blonde ombré to allow for root growth etc. I don't like it at all. I want it long again. I felt I was too old to have it so long and styled but now I am growing it again, might keep the blonde although it's not the statement I hoped it would be, I just feel I look mumsy.

Yes, the most important thing is to try different lengths of hair, and choose the length that suits you, and that you love. For me, that's a short pixie cut. And as someone upthread said, I love having hair that's different from almost everyone else's.

I've had short hair as a young teen. Quite frankly, my head looked like a triangle. Not a good look! Grin I suit my long, curly hair and doubt I'll ever cut it. It's my crowning glory if I do say so myself! Short just doesn't suit me at all!

I actually prefer your hair longer Eliza. You have nice hair and I think a style similar to the long one but with perhaps 2-3 inches chopped off and some long layers would suit you.

electro I think fringes make one look younger anyway: as well as covering the wrinkles they are kind of girly/childlike somehow Imo...

BabyGanoush · 25/05/2015 14:05

I like longer hair best now I am older. (40s)

Also like being able to pull it back fir sport/activities.

It does not need washing/styling every day. I often just wash and leave it to dry.

To me, long hair suits my laziness!

Floisme · 25/05/2015 14:18

My hair kind of looks like this only I have more of a side fringe. (The pic isn't me, sadly!)

I've had variations on this style since I was about 18. I get bored sometimes and grow it and try new things but this is the look I always end up coming back to.

My hair's wavy and quite thick so apart from regular cutting, this style is maintenance free. I also have a small face and anything much longer just swamps me.

What on earth can I do with this? It's so 80's. I just can't bear the whole growing out thing though....

Mine is always short, I don't like it long so I have it as short as it possibly can be and get it cut every three weeks to keep it very short.

hattymattie · 25/05/2015 15:23

Floisme - I love that look but can't tell if it's long and pinned up or short. If I looked that good grey I'd go for it!

JessiePinkman · 25/05/2015 17:29

vitaminc I like the volume you can get with short hair, in that way I think it would suit me but I would feel bare around the cheeks/jowls/double chin area!!
All the photos on here are great, one thing in common though - already beautiful women. I love these styles too

Babylon tbe first pic is lovely. Is the second the same cut? I would cut the side in the second bit more, it needs shorter layers.

Cocolepew · 25/05/2015 17:34

This is my favourite all time cut

I love Gennifer Goodwins short hair too

Wishful80smontage · 25/05/2015 17:50

For me I look better with long hair- my hair is very thick so it sits nicer when its long and the weight pulls it down.
I wouldn't say there is a general rule that long hair is more attractive though I think Emma Willis is probably the most attractive woman on tv at the minute and her hair is shorter. I think what is a attractive is having healthy hair cut in a style that suits your face shape whatever length that is.

Babylonbaby77 · 25/05/2015 18:00

Yes, same cut, taken today and yesterday. One side flicks out as in the first picture, the other refuses to do anything apart from cling to my head. My hair is fine and flat. Hopeless and like rats tails when any length and flat and mousey when short which is ageing. I'm 42 and feel 62.

HakunaFritatta · 25/05/2015 18:05

Over the last year or so the celebrity trend of having really long wavy locks has been fading out. The Lob (shoulder length Bob) is where it's at now and the Kate Middleton look is beginning to look a bit dated (still love her hair though). Jessica Alba, Natalie Portman and Sienna Miller are good examples of celebrities going a bit shorter and looking great. Even Cheryl Cole recently went for the chop, which was quite a surprise as she's been surgically attached to her extensions for at least a decade.

OP, roll with your new look and enjoy!

Jux · 25/05/2015 18:09

It depends very much on your hair. I loathe having long hair, and feel infinitely better when it's short, regardless of whether I am more or less attractive - I neither know nor care.

Long hair on others can be gorgeous and wonderful, or it can be thin and stringy and horrid.

Cocolepew · 25/05/2015 18:11

Id cut it above my ears if I were you Babylon. Choppy layers help.
I alwsys use product in short hair, I hate having fluffy hair. If I were you Id use something.

The top bit is lovely , it realy suits you.

Babylonbaby77 · 25/05/2015 18:18

Thanks, I have had it cut above my ears but felt that it was even more ageing, I was trying to grow it out a little. The sides are a nuisance though.

LillianGish · 25/05/2015 18:58

No hard and fast rules imo. You need a nice face and good bones for a short cut - there are lots of people with gorgeous faces who do themselves no favours by swamping their features with loads of hair I think that's when long hair can be ageing. OTOH gorgeous hair can draw attention away from less than perfect features (was pondering this while watching Rachel de Thame presenting the Chelsea Flower show last week - she is gorgeous, but I think her hair has a lot to do with that). Let's not pretend lovely locks happen by accident though. Kate Middleton's hair is fab, but she doesn't just wake up in the morning, give it a shake and leave it at that. If you want your long hair to look good you've got to put the effort in - scraped back in a scrunchie does no one any favours.

SpecificOcean · 25/05/2015 19:05

I love this short style

happywiththis · 25/05/2015 19:11

does it depend on the shape of your face & head?
but also - what makes you feel good . If you feel good about it..it will probably look good!
